We got our 8 week old French Lop baby on Saturday and when I woke up this morning, his eyes were both watery. There seems to be no redness/swelling and there is not “goop” coming out, it just looks like tears. The fur under his eyes is all matted together because of it. I tried gently wiping under his eyes with a warm, damp wash cloth, but they don’t look much better. Any idea what may be wrong with him? Is it something that will go away on it’s own, or should he see a vet? I’m kind of torn because there is no thick, or discolored discharge. Thanks for your help!

Here are pics of his eyes…

Was that first picture before or after you wiped his eyes? That does not look normal and if he’s only 8 weeks old, then I would be concerned.

It would be a good idea anyway to have a baseline exam done on him if he’s new to you.

Sorry, I should’ve taken a picture of before… That’s actually like 10 min. after I wiped his eyes. Before it was just a small area of clumped together fur trailing from the inner corner of his eyes. With the pics I mainly wanted to show the general condition of his eyes (not red, swollen, infected looking).

I guess at this point, then I would just watch them.

I do very much recommend that within the next few weeks you do set up a vet appointment for a baseline exam.

I would follow Sarita’s suggestions. However I wanted to add, could this be due to the environment? Where is the bunny currently housed? I know my two lops are particularly sensitive when it comes to their eyes…

He’s mostly inside. He kind of goes wherever we go. If we’re inside, he’s inside, if we’re outside playing (I have a young son), he’s hanging out in the outside hutch. Could he possibly have allergies to something in our yard? I can’t figure it out. His cage is clean, as is the outside hutch. My other bun has no eye problems whatsoever. There doesn’t appear to be any damage to the eyeballs themselves… Do buns get allergies like that?

Keep an eye on it- if it is producing enough tearing to mat the fur then he needs to be seen. Scratches on the eye cannot be seen unless they are severe without the vet staining the eye with special meds and the scratch “takes up” the stain and makes the scratch visible.
So if it continues I would get him into the vet to make sure it is not an eye injury or an upper respiratory infection (which can cause eye drainage).
