Okay, I just got a surprise. I took a look at Wooly this morning and thought to myself that he was looking a bit like a raggamuffin. So I waited for the opportunity to grab him and I got out his brush. I started brushing him and all this fur was just coming out in chucks! He is only about 11 months old, so I have never seen him shed like this. I’m guessing he just sheds all in one big chunk? Leopold just sheds a little bit all the time. Anyway, Wooly wasn’t too happy with me because he was getting brushed longer than usual (the fur just kept coming off). You could tell he was getting mad, so I’m sure he’s going to be even madder when I take him out again to try to get some more. Is this typcial of Jersey Woolies? It literally started overnight, I was just so shocked. And to think I was just asking about using a hair razor tool to “saw off” his little mats he gets on his butt.

You know, I should have taken a picture of the pile of fur I got. I practically could have made a sweater out of it!

Ah….the dreaded explosion molt. Is this his first molt. The very first molt is also commonly one of the worst. It also makes normally calm people have OCD regarding their bunny’s shedding. Those darn loose clumps can make ya crazy. So yeah…..sounds normal.

Yes, this would be the first one. Like I said, it literally started overnight. Suddenly the hair was just coming off in clumps.

Haha! It’s funny you said that because I was brushing him some more this morning and some hair flew up into my nose. I sneezed and he jumped! He still wasn’t too happy about the brushing, but I held him afterward and he seemed to calm down. He likes it when I hold him so he can rest his chin on my shoulder. Then he got a treat when I went to put him back. And, of course, Leopold had to have one too even though I didn’t do anything to him.

I have been using a small animal slicker brush since that was what I have been using with no problems. I worry that I’m pulling his hair too much though. His fur is coming off in chunks and the fur is moving along a line from front to back. It very much reminds me of a chinchilla molting their coat. Anyway, since there is so much fur coming off at once, it is almost like a big mass that is sliding off of the hairs that are still attached. The brush doesn’t go through that stuff very easily, I don’t want to hurt him. Would you recommend the slicker brush or something else? I don’t think they make a fur rake that small.

The Hairbuster comb that is sold here gets good reviews.

^ I will have to check that out! Unfortunately, I think he will be done by the time something like that got shipped to me. I guess I would be able to use it next time though.

We used to have a Furminator that was for my cat. He loved to be “brushed” with that thing. I gave it to my mom to use with her cat. I’m doubting that such a thing would be useful on Wooly, but it might work well for getting all those little hairs that Leopold is constantly shedding. Would that be safe to use on a short haired rabbit? He’s a holland lop.
