Hello, wondering what kind of veggies do you give your buns? I usually give mine dandelion and cilantro.  Seems to me they love these two but not so much others I’ve tried.  Just trying to get some ideas on what else I should try?  Thanks!

Mine eat romaine, green/red leaf lettuce, and parsley almost exclusively. I like romaine because it comes in large heads and stays fresh for at least a week. They love their parsley, and I like having it around so I can grab a handful and cook with it. Sometimes they get escarole, but I yell at DH when he buys it because it’s way more expensive than the other lettuces 😉 Chicory is a good lettuce too, though they don’t seem to like it as much.

Beyond that, they get things we have sitting around and need to use up, especially last summer when we got all sorts of random things from the farmer’s market (beet tops, kohlrabi tops, arugula, etc). We also buy the big boxes of mixed greens for salad and if we have any left at the end of the week the bunnies get it with their dinner. They also get any herbs I buy for cooking and don’t completely use up. They’re great for cleaning out the fridge sometimes! Haha

eta: I should mention that Otto is fairly picky, which is why I usually limit it to only the lettuce and parsley. Most of the time anything “different” just gets eaten by Hannah. He also gets poopy butt occasionally, so I try to limit the new foods in his diet. Just have to work with your rabbit and what they like, sometimes.

I give Romaine, sometimes Green Leaf, cilantro or parsley (curly or flat leaf), basil, dill, mint. I’d give a bigger variety if I had less rabbits but with 6 that’s usually the variety they get every day.

A few of them aren’t big on the dill but the rest like it. They all love basil, mint, and cilantro. The lettuces, they can take or leave I guess because sometime they eat them and sometimes they don’t. I also have given sage and they like that okay. Also carrots.

We feed ours the same veggies everyday – bok choy, cilantro, celery, and one small carrot to share.  These are the veggies recommended by our vet and the House Rabbit Society, and our buns’ digestion is wonderful!

Here’s a nifty guide you can print and keep in your wallet for when you go shopping.  Make sure you pay attention to which vegetables have an asterix, because those should only be given one to three times a week, if at all.  For instance, I’ve heard that many bunnies *love* kale… but several bunny owners have told me that it tends to give their buns the runs.  No one wants that!

Cilantro and both curly leaf and Italian parsley are bigs hits with my bunnies, but most anything gets gobbled up pretty quickly. The one thing Peppy won’t touch is dill though, and Milo doesn’t seem super fond of basil. Remi on the other hand is a very reluctant eater, and takes hours to finish anything!

Thanks for the ideas and thanks for the list LizzieKnittyBun!

Sarita- On my! 6! I wish I could have 6! I tried mint once and they didn’t like it at all! So picky!!

Silly question, do you guys chop/cut up your veggies? I usually cut up the dandelions (not in tiny pieces but maybe 3-4 inch). Of course, the cilantro I leave as is.

I used to chop veggies, than I realized… DUH! They have these big sharp teeth! Let them chop ’em up!!! Now I’ll usually just stuff the veggies in the bowl, or maybe break them in half once.

No, I don’t chop anything up. Like Beka said, they have sharp little chompers already and sometimes they like to fling their lettuce around and play with it.

My bunnies get alot of variety due to the fact I don’t feed pellets (Since Jack has a problem metabolizing calcium so he has to have a very hydrated diet)

                          • Lettuces –  one of romaine, curly, red,or endive  (lettuces may not be full of nutrition, but still help with hydration)
                          • Dill (THEY LOVE)
                          • Mint
                          • Arugula
                          • Basil
                          • Oregano (when it’s in season and cheaper)
                          • Cilantro
                          • Celery (cut in 1/2″pieces) – another low nutrition, but high hydration
                          • Parsley    (higher in calcium, but a duiretic which helps with flushing the system)
                          • Dandelion  (higher in calcium, but a duiretic which helps with flushing the system)
                          • Wheat Grass
                          • Carrots (because they don’t get pellets, carrots as part of their regular staple are fine) — also carrots aren’t as high in sugar as once believed to be.

That can cost alot but when I was in San Francisco there was a great Farmers Market that had cheap prices, and I recently found a new market in Berkeley that sells everything at a really reasonable price — I save about 40%.    Plus, I know we are fortunate around here to have high quality greens all year round.

-cherry tomato(still trying to get her to try them)
