Hi all. Im lost. My bunns are both almost a year old, and we were told they were both females. Well, the last couple days one has been acting *CRAZY* lol. Digging my carpet, and 24/7 hyper. Today I caught her gathering hay and transporting it into one of their boxes they have. I started digging myself and reading…How will I know if its a real pregnancy or that she just thinks she is pregnant??? Thanks so much.

Male bunnies are mature at 4 months, and females around 6 months. If your bunnies are not spayed/neutered yet, PLEASE separate them immediately! It happens all the time that bunnies are mis-sexed, and people who thought they had two males or two females wake up one day to a surprise litter. The only way to prevent this is to get them both fixed. Even if they indeed are two males or two females, intact bunnies become territorial and babies that used to get along will begin to fight each other – if you want to keep them living together, they need to be fixed.

I’m not sure if there is a way to tell between a true pregnancy and a false one…gestation is about a month for bunnies, so please keep and eye on her. Keep us updated!

Thank you. We have had them since they were both 10 and 12 weeks, but the brown one (Miki…the one showing signs) has always been the dominant female of the 2

Are they the bunnies in your picture? They are adorable. Do you have any plans to have your bunnies fixed?

Yes…That is Miki (Mee-Kee)*brown* and Kiki (Kee-Kee)*white* We live in Hawaii, and thats where their names come from . We have talked about getting them fixed, but because we assumed they were both females, and got along, that we didnt need to, but I promise if some kits come out of my mistake, it wont happen again

Aww, I love their names too! I think there are a few members here that are also in Hawaii.  Even if both of your rabbits are indeed female, it is important to have them both spayed for a few reasons:

                  • An unspayed female has an 80% chance of developing uterine or ovarian cancer between two and five years of age.
                  • Intact rabbits can become aggressive, territorial, and more destructive after maturity
                  • Litter box habits are a lot more reliable in rabbits that are fixed
                  • Even if both rabbits in a pair are male/male or female/female, rabbits are naturally territorial and begin to fight after maturity, even if they were best buddies as babies.

Yes : ) I agree with peppy. It is best to get them both checked out by a vet, properly sexed and spayed or neutered.

Chances are they would have had a pregnancy already if they were male and female. So I am guessing this is a false pregnancy. Fortunately… because there are so many homeless animals in shelters and rescues around the country, and many more that go to inadequate homes… or worse. I would be very, very disappointed if a pregnancy resulted.

Please let us know if you need more info on spay/neuter or assistance with finding a qualified vet.
