The dandilions are blooming like mad, and my yard is well dotted with nice clean organic yummy yellow flowers.  As I go in and out of the house it is easy to grab a nice handful of flowers and leave for Porky to enjoy.  Today my yard has well over a months supply of these treats.  I know that all too soon the dandylions will give way to the clovers and violets.  In the garden there will be rose pettals and parsley.  It will be a long summer full of free treats.

This bounty won’t last forever though.  Fall will come and the flowers will go.  What is the best way to preserve the spoils of spring and summer for winter treats?  Should I press them in a flower press?   Just hang some of it to dry?  Put it in the freezer?  How do you save various flowers, herds and greens?

Nobody finds ways to save treats from the garden to use in the winter?

Hi Eepster. I read this awhile back and hoped others would have ideas because I was scratching my head about any ideas.

I really don’t think anything beats fresh herbs as far as being palatable for the rabbit palate. I do know that there are nice herb and flower mixtures that they sell for treats for rabbits and my rabbits love those – have no idea myself on how to dry herbs.

I know Petzy said she hung dill in her basement once.

You can oven dry the herbs and greens of the dandy – probably the flower too. Or do some in a food dehydrator. I pick weeping willow and hang it in a dark dry (ventilated) place to dry. Then I can feed it dry when the fresh is not available. I’vee dried some carrot tops too. They look less appealing but the rabbits still enjoyed them dried.

I think drying is the way to go. After all, hay is technically dried plant matter and hay is the major component of their diets. You can freeze herbs but most the time you have to chop them and put them in water. I think parsley is about the only one that freezes well as it is. Most stuff turns black.

I often visit this site: http://www.galensgarden.co.uk  It may give you some more ideas. Lots of dried products.
