Ugh! This is so gross, and I dont know why this is happening.

Betty is my only bun, and shes a little over a year, unspayed, and previously completely littertrained except she liked to poop a little in her cage outside her box, but that I didnt really mind.

I had to move her house about 2 months ago to the other side of the room. It was fine until about 3 weeks ago, but then she started peeing outside of her box a little bit while in her cage. I would clean it up as best as I could, and hope it was a weird phase thst she would get over, and kept encouraging her to use her box as much as possible. But then it just kept getting worse and worse, and I started getting puppy training pads to put under her cage to absorb the urine, and she soaks thru one entirely each day plus some. Its gotten to the point she doesnt use her box at ALL anymore.

She has a 3 tiered homemade NIC cube cage, so unfortunately peeing outside the litter box in those basically just means it goes ALL over the floor and all over the place. Although I’ve been working hard at keeping everything as clean as possible, she is still destroying my hardwood floor by her cage, and making my tiny apartment smell awful, even with windows open.

I dont know if this has to do with moving her cage or not, but regardless moving it back to original spot is not an option.

        Help?!!?

It could be a number of things. Spaying will help first of all…do you plan on getting her spayed?

Also you might try a larger litter box or a different litter.

First of all, I suggest you get her spayed. Even if a young bunny is litter trained, these habits often go out the window when she reaches maturity and will not return until she is spayed. Beside this, there are so many health benefits to spaying, and female rabbits generally can live much longer, happier lives this way.

Is she peeing outside the litterbox in the same spot? Or is it just randomly everywhere? Also, does she pee when she is outside the cage?

I know I need to get her spayed, and I really want to, but its so expensive. I will as soon as possible, but there has to be something else I can do until then. 3 weeks ago she was perfectly trained. And now its exactly opposite

Just randomly everywhere inside her cage, outside her cage shes fine. When shes out she always runs back to her cage to pee/poop. And all her other behavior is the same.

Unspayed rabbit’s litter habits will not be fixed unless spayed.. She is marking her territory.

From what I’ve read here, sounds like your bunny needs to be spayed. She could be pissed that you’ve moved her cage too, considering she was so used to going in one corner. I can imagine it must be a nightmare.

I’d recommend using a yankee roomscenter candle to help with the smell. Something really strong like lavander and lemon placed near her cage could help. I also live in a tiny apartment and while I’m lucky in the fact that Zelda doesn’t smell that bad, I do have a mango candle lit at all times. People actually compliment the smell of my home!

I have to disagree with the suggestion of a strongly scented air freshener. Those are much too strong for rabbits, they are very sensitive to smells and they can develop respiratory issues if exposed for too long. Additionally, when caged or penned, they cannot escape the smell. It is not acceptable to have a strongly smelling air freshener in the same area as the bunny. You can place it in another area of the house, just not in the same room. (Imagine being locked in a tiny room with a horribly strong smell and whatever you did, you could not get away from the smell.)

OhSnap, have you tried larger litter boxes, different litter, a larger cage or pen? There are a variety of things you can try, but they might or might not make a difference seeing as she is not spayed. Spaying is a necessary procedure. Not to get too far off topic, but what kind of quotes have you received? Have you called around to different vets to compare prices?

I find that rabbit pee really have a strong oder. So might be that she sprayed her urine somewhere that you overlooked. I find that 10% vinegar works great removing those pee stains. ( use a spray bottle about 750 ml fill it with water then 75ml white vinegar). be sure to wipe it clean tho, otherwise your house would smell like vinegar…don’t know which one is worse…

as far as spaying goes, I live in Los Angeles. And the price varies greatly around my area (from 35 all the way to 200)
I use this website to compare price :http://www.spayusa.org/
Just click on your state(hoepfully its there), and it will ask for your location and the type of animal you want to perform spay/neuter (dog, cat, rabbit, etc) then follow the prompt.
Hope that helps with the money issue.

Also, I found somewhere that if your combined income is lower than 34,000 a year. You are qualified for a free spay or neuter of your animal. Can’t find the website, it’s on the computer at work. But if you want, I can look it up for you.

Thank you thank you for everyones suggestions!

cage- I dont have room for a bigger cage, so thats out.
litter box- Good idea, I think I can make it to the petstore within a few days to get some bigger litter boxes to try
litter- I dont think its the litter. When I was initially training her we tried as many different options as I could find until we found what agreed for both of us- Yesterdays News. If things dont improve within next few weeks I suppose Ill try different, but really think its not the problem
spay- I havent looked into spaying for about 6 months, so I dont remember prices exactly, but I think they were mostly around the $175 range. Time to do some major research into prices for that though. Cuckoo, that would be great if you could find that website

When she is spayed, does everyone really expect her to just turn back into perfectly litter trained bunny?

I also heard that spaying makes urine smell less, is this true or a myth?

                        Good News!
just on a hunch I tried putting a litter box in front of her cage, even though she was only having problems in her cage, and it seems to be helping a little bit! Shes spends most of the day out of her cage, but usually always returns there to defecate, ignoring all her other litter boxes around, but this one seems to be different, and is helping. Still a loooong way to go, but its a start

so i looked up the website, I overlooked the fact that it’s for the Los Angeles area only…Sorry to raise your hopes up

But if you happen to live in the Los Angeles area, the program is called the Free Certificate Spay/Neuter Program. Maybe you came try googleing that see if there’s one like that near your area.

And here’s the website for those of you that need it:

                          http://www.laanimalservices.com/serv_bigfix.htm

Another option is try the local animal shelter, In my case, I’ve looked up the local ASPCA, they offer neutering at $100

spaying is more expensive, becasue surgical difficulty i guess.
