        Hi,

I find myself in a new and slightly terrifying situation.  I’ve got an adorable rabbit who is 7 years old and over time has been granted access to most of my house.  In a few days due to some less than ideal circumstances, my sister will be moving in and she is bringing with her 4 birds and two dogs.  While granted I’m not too concerned about the birds, her dogs are still in puppy stage.  What do I need to do so as make this transition go as smoothly as possible?  I really don’t want my rabbit to be too stressed over this.

        Thanks.

        Cristy

Are your rabbits in a separate room with a door that can be easily closed? If not, I would maybe try to relocate them to a safe space away from the dogs. The birds can also be a concern if they are flinging seed around. Seeds can cause gut impaction in rabbits.

Alas, my rabbit’s prime sanctuary is my own bedroom, but she also has access to the living room, bathroom, and kitchen. I know the birds will be kept in a room that my rabbit does not have (regular) access to (she sometimes sneaks in), but I don’t know the dogs will be kept. I share the house with my father and my brother, so we are rather limited in space as it is. My sister mentioned something about a crate, but as of now she has only one crate for two dogs.

I realize that I’ll be closing my rabbit in my room for the most part – it is my intention to keep it dog and bird free, but it doesn’t seem fair to limit her freedom because the dogs. I only hope my sister realizes this, I just don’t know how it will work.

            Thanks,
            Cristy

It is not ideal, especially since she’s used to having more freedom, but we all must sometimes make sacrifices for the people in our lives. Your bun will have a safe space in your room and she’ll have you to interact with. In the meantime, you can try to optimize your room by organizing things and storing them in a way to increase open floor space. If you have extra things in there (like furniture), you might see if that can be moved somewhere else. Maybe moving existing furniture around would open up the space.

I’m assuming your sister is an adult and has to move back in with dad due to some type of hardship. That isn’t an easy thing to deal with. It sounds like she will need your support now more than ever. She’s very fortunate to have family she can depend on.

Maybe you could work out a sort of time share on the larger spaces. The dogs can have a period of the day when they’re free to roam (everywhere but your room where the bun is). If the dogs are confined too much you might find that they eat your house. Then the other half of the day the dogs are confined to one room while the bun has free access to the house, except for the dog/bird room.

When does this happen? Just wondering if things were underway yet? I think you are right to keep her away from teh birds-they can carry parasites and your bunny will probably try to eat the spilled seed. I would just be firm with sis that the dogs need to be in the yard, on a walk or crated so your bunny who lives there-can have his out time
