i seem to recal a thread about this ages ago but haven’t had success searching for it.

i realize now that pinky drinks her entire bowl of water in one shot after eating her pellets in the morning.  this seems to encourage incontinence – no doubt because her wee system cannot hold that much water – because i find puddles in her enclosure and on her floor mats.  since i feed her & fill her water dish before i head out to work i havent realized the pattern.  plus because the pee is so dilute i thought it was water spills.  i just realized what was going on this weekend and put 2 & 2 together.

in all other ways she behaves / feels normal.  does this point to a possible health problem worthy of a vet visit do you think?  or is it behavioral? i was thinking i should only give her smaller amounts of water at a time so that it’s not so much for her system all at once.  silly girl.

It could be a number of things including dental problems. I don’t think I would ration her water if she is thirsty or trying to relieve pain due to dental then rationing would be more harmful than helpful.

I would say if it’s a UTI or dental she will most likely still be eating and drinking normally but the pee outside the box is the abnormal behavior. Rabbits who are uncomfortable or in pain won’t necessarily stop eating but they will change their behavior in ways that you describe.

Hopefully it’s nothing but better safe than sorry. Let us know what the vet says.

i totally agree. i usually know before a post like this that the solution is “go to the vet” but it’s nice to have that thought validated. and also to be a little informed when i go in as to the type of things that they might check for.

they fit me in thurs at 5:30… will def update.

(((Vibes)))) I was going to say it’s not unusual for them to drink a lot at once. I won’t see Lolli drink all day then at night, she’ll sit there for what seems like 10 minutes and drink. But she’s not drinking all her water and isn’t having peeing issues. So I hope she’s ok and good luck at the vets!

well miss pinky and i are just back from the vet. let’s see what i can remember…

her physical exam did not reveal any issues. good pulse, good temp, good feeling tummy / jaw / nose / head, good color gums, good teeth. her behaviour has been good (she’s eating & pooping normally and is not tilty or crouching). so my vet has ruled out kidney infection and tooth problems. there’s a possible parasite she could have but the test is over $200 and since she’s not showing any balance problems and eating well it’s not likely she has this. it’s not head tilit but something with a really long name that i can’t remember. i am going to keep a close eye on her to be sure none of those behaviours develope. and rabbit diabetes is apparently only a concern if they’ve been on a certain med that she has not had so we’re good there too.

so they got a urine sample and are doing a full urinalysis to check for a low grade bladder infection. if that’s clear then it’s possible it’s a psychgenic behavior which apparently is not too uncommon for new zealand whites. lol. this does not surprise me.

one other thing… her hocks are a little sore. i have some ointment for them to help clear it up. she had this whn i first adopted her becasue she was very thumpy. her thumpiness subsided as she settled in (and i padded her enclosure floor) and in subsequent exams her hocks looked good. so i’m wondering if she’s drinking / thumping out of boredom or lonliness? i haven’t heard her thumping when i’m home.

so we shall wait a couple of days to hear back about the urinalysis. and if that’s all clear then apparently pinky has a drinking pronlem.

oh ya… and the last couple of days she has NOT drank all of her water right away. so she is not consistant. and no funny color or lumps or grit in her pee.  that weighed into the vet’s diagnosis too.

I bet your vet was talking about Encephalitozoon Cuniculi AKA: e.cuniculi. Head tilt is not exclusively related to e.cuniculi.  The parasite can affect other organs and not cause head tilt.  It can affect the kidneys, or cause leg weakness, eye issues each being their own symptom — just want to make sure people do understand that as too many times e.cuniculi is only assocaited with head tilt.   I don’t want to scare you, just want to make sure that you are aware .  Most bunnies live without any symptoms or minimal sypmtoms.

And it sounds like Pinky is doing fine.  It also sounds like you have a great vet.  The fact that she/he factored in e.cuniculi and calcium issues and is doing a urinalysis. That really is great!

I vote for a drinking problem — next round of drinks on me.

yup… water shots all around! w00p! it’s the weekend

very interesting BB… thanks for clearing that up! haha. yes… sounding out “Encephalitozoon” does sound like the word she spoke. funny, had she abbreviated or added “cuniculi” i would’ve known what she was talking about. lol. just remembered that another thing she told me to keep an eye on if her privates are urine soaked. poor goose.

she really does seem to be a good vet. she’s sooo expensive but worth it because i trust her level of rabbit knowledge. and she’s such a gentle soul.

pinky was pretty comfortable at the vet yesterday. i think it’s because she uses her carry cage as a nap spot during the day. she was eatin hay and doin some groomin while we were there. she even gave nose bumps and of course accepted lots of head pets. she’s not gonna be too pleased with me rubbing ointment on her hocks daily but at least she handles well.

Could her hocks flared up because of the pee puddles?

Really? That’s interesting! Did your vet say this?
