Since Wooly and Leopold have been spending so much time together, it is sometimes difficult for me to get Wooly out. He sees me coming and he hides under Leopold and grunts at me. And if they are out of the cage already, then forget it!  I was able to get him this morning by tricking him into coming out in the open while he was inside Leopold’s cage. Anyway, I wanted to get ahold of him so I could check his butt for matts. He had a couple that were developing, so I went to pull them out. Of course, he got mad at me and gave me a warning nip. Lucky for me, a warning nip from him doesn’t draw blood or leave bruises like Leopold’s “nips” do. If the matt doesn’t pull out easily, then I will often use finger nail clippers to cut the part that is hanging on. I feel like there is a lot less chance of me accidentally cutting him that way. I always make sure it is pulled away from his body and there isn’t anything “hiding” inside the fur. I got to thinking though. What about those razor tools that hairstylists use to give that “feathered” look? I imagine that would be a lot less “”traumatic”. Would it be okay to use one of those? Here is a picture of one if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

My idea is to pull the matt away from the skin that then use the tool to gently cut it off.

I would use grooming shears with the rounded tip. I bought a pair for when Lolli had poopy butt from fruit and they worked just fine. It was also easier to control and the rounded tips prevented me from nicking her. I’m just afraid it would be too easy to nick the skin or weewee with a razor. Unless he’s long haired. I can’t remember. lol If he was long haired and you could pull the fur out away from the body, a razor would probably be fine.

Yes, he has long wooly fur. I just pull the fur away from his skin and use finger nail clippers. I thought the hair cutter would work well because it is small and it has teeth that would prevent the blade from coming in contact with anything.

Well there you go then! The first thing that came to mind was short haired bunnies. And Lolli’s a mini rex so her fur is really short. I switched to the round tip scissors cause I did accidentally nip her with regular scissors.
