        Hello,

I was wondering how much hay you go through for your certain amount of bunnies?

When I first got my girls I was getting their hay from the pet store because they were having what I thought was a sale and because it was close to where I live. Lol. But then I found out that the place I adopted them from sells it in whatever quantity I want for far cheaper and I’ve been trying to figure out how much I need to get so that I only need to pick it up once a month. The first time I got 8 lbs and that lasted 3 weeks so I figured a little more should last 4. So then I got 10 lbs but that barely lasted 3 weeks, but the girls did get a little bigger in that time. I just got 12 lbs to see if that lasts any longer.

So how much lasts you a month? Or what amounts do you get and how long does it usually last and for how many bunnies?

I go through 25 lbs of oxbow orchard grass hay every 3-4 months for my two hungry little bunnies. They just eat and eat and eat.

My bunnies are little hay monsters…I got a 12-lb bag almost 3 weeks ago, and they’re just about finishing it up. Time to take another trip to the bunny shelter for more hay!

I use 10-15 pounds per month for the two ~5 pound bunnies- but I buy it by the bale now, so they’re allowed to waste some I would guess that they actually consume 8 pounds per month.

I am not sure how many pounds it is, but I go through 1 bale of hay every month for my two.

Thanks everyone for your responses! It seems that my bunnies fall somewhere in the middle so far, so that’s good. Thanks!

Sonn: Wow, 25 lbs a month really?!? How big are they?

I order my hay thru Kleenmama’s hayloft and buy at least 25 pounds at a time. I have 4 guinea pigs and then my rabbit Gabby who eats it too. Even with the high shipping it comes out cheaper than buying at a local pet store and her hay is awesome.

My bunnies can go through about 15 pounds in about a month. Some months though my bunnies just scarf it down, while other times, they are just nibbling through it all. So give or take a few pounds.

Lol yeah really. Pacey goes between 3.2lbs and 3.5lbs and Dini right now is at 1.3 lbs. Seriously I think they spend 99% of their day with their heads in their hay lol.

We have 3 bunnies: Melody (approx 5lb lop), Freddie (approx 4.5lb dutchie/? mix), and Robin (approx. 4.5lb dwarf/dutchie mix – who’s heavier than her ideal wait, she was unhealthy/fat when we saved her, she’s slowly thinning out) and between the 3 of them, they eat 50lbs of hay in a month. Of course not every morsel is eaten but for the most part it is, they get fresh hay first thing in the morning, before I leave for work at 845am, then when I get home, sometime during the evening (normally around 7-9 depending on if I’m going out) then again before bed.

We go through about one hay bale a month with our 8mo New Zealand Red boy and 4mo French lop girl, which means about 50lbs of hay per month. They do waste quite a bit of it, though, since they’re both “shredders” and enjoy digging at their hay. Though, to be fair, they are both quite big bunnies – our NZR has just reached his adult weight of around 4kg, so around 8.8 lbs, and our French lop girl is still growing and currently about the same size as Tossu.

I don’t mind, hay is free for us and it’s something healthy for them to shred and dig through.
