My four month old American Fuzzy Lop is always sticking his tongue out. It is almost like a snake, like he is tasting the air. Is this something to worry about?

Also, I have never owned a rabbit before, and now I have this lovely bunny. If you have any helpful tips on how to make him happy, I want to hear it.

          Welcome Adrienne

It’s probably some cause for concern. Some reasons I can think straight of are his teeth are worrying him. At four months, if it is teeth, then he’s likely born with a dental malocclusion so you’d need to keep close watch on that.

Or it could be he’s ingesting a lot of that long fur and trying to clear that out his mouth. Do you brush him regularly and provide plenty of hay for him to eat?

Third reason I thought is he’s trying to open his airways a bit. Does he point his head upward when poking out his tongue?

Whatever the reason, I would encourage you to visit a good rabbit vet.

            Hi!

I have taken him to a vet, and the vet said he is a healthy rabbit.

I do wonder if it is something to do with his teeth, as he is not a fan of chewing on hard blocks of wood, or chewing on anything that is not soft for very long. But, he also does not seem interested in toys or playing with things period. Fun for him chewing on a phone book or pushing things around and exploring.

He does not act like anything is bothering him. He runs and jumps and explores happily enough.

My bunny Monkey “tastes” the air now and then, especially if she thinks it is dinner time, or treat time

Some have different styles of play or entertainment. Not all go mad chewing things. : ) Does he manage with hay though?

My Milo’s tongue is constantly sticking out a little too. It’s super silly looking! He had severe malocclusion to the point where his incisors were removed – I’m not sure if the tongue thing is an old habit because of the malocclusion, or a result of the lack of incisors (by the time I adopted him, they had already been extracted, so I don’t know what he did before).  Do you remember if the vet stuck something in his mouth and got a good look at his teeth?

Hmmm. i have never seen the tongue thing, but it would make me concerned about the teeth as well.

When you vet examined your bunny, did he/she look at your bunny’s teeth and use a scope to see the back molars?
