Typically I use raisins as a treat for my bun. Treat as in maybe 3 or so little ones as a reward or during playtime. I was volunteering at the shelter I got Elena from and the woman who runs it had a little freak out about me giving them to her. I’ve seen references over the House Rabbit Society’s(rabbit.org) website about them being ok. Has anyone else heard or can confirm thier detriment to a buns health?

They are fine. My vet says so too! I know a couple people that freak out about giving fruits to buns, says they can’t digest sugar which is just… not right. Just don’t give too many, as they can make buns chubby and have poop issues

And stop telling them what you give to your buns. hehe

It is true that rabbits have lower ability to digest some kinds of sugars; this means that these sugars just pass through the digestive system and feed the gut flora, which can cause a toxic imbalance and poop issues. This is the main problem with glucose, the molecule we normally think of as sugar that is added in cooking, food products, etc. However, the predominant sugar in fruit (fructose) should be just fine for adult buns, as long as they don’t have too much.

There is a good deal of differing opinion regarding what is good and bad for bunnies, even among people very experienced with rabbit care. I figure you can never please them all…make your decisions based on informed research and just realize that there will always be people that freak out at something or other that you decide to do.

I bet she is thinking of the reports that raisins are toxic to dogs- raisins or grapes- there is no concrete findings of why and why only some dogs- but they can be fatal. Since I have dogs- I only give my bunnies Craisins since the dogs WOULD eat them if they could get them first. ANd I don’t want to take the chance of having a bag the dogs could get into.

Before adopting Gabby I was in contact with a woman who has 3 buns of her own and does rabbit fostering. She feeds her buns and foster buns raisins as a daily treat. I give them to Gabby too. She gets 5-6 of them a night as a special treat after her salad is gone.

I do craisins – most of my rabbits love these.

thank you everyone! I know that there will always be differeing opinions on things but I just didn’t want to take a chance on my little girl. Her digestive system certainly handles them well (no runny poop etc). I think she has a stomach of steel

Funny, my buns turn their noses up at raisins. They love their “naners” though. Can’t get enough of them. I limit them to one chip each at night, they like the banana chips from Oxbow.

My buns were fine with them for a long time, but then someone started overproducing cecals. So no one gets raisins anymore. If the bun can handle them, they’re fine, fed in a very limited amount.

This is good to know. I call her my little raisin nut. She loves them (and just about everything I give her) so I like to use them for behavior reinforecment. The best part is seeing her try to open the can once I’ve put the lid back on!

You can also (carefully) cut the raisins into halves or thirds. This way she is getting the same number of treats, but you get to hand feed more times.

My boys turn their noses up to raisins, even Comet who eats pretty much anything and everything I have him try. They lovvvvve craisins though and that works well because I do not like raisins either and I love craisins! So we buy the big Costco bag and share treats, hehehe.

My bunnies love raisins, but I feed them dried cranberries (craisins) just because I think the cranberries must be better at least for the UTI. But really, not sure, never really researched anything. Just something I decided in my little ‘ol brain. Both are a sugary, and I don’t want to give them too much, so what I do is just tear them up (it’s icky gooey) into little pieces. One big one can be torn into 3 tasty little pieces! You get more rabbit appreciation too cuz they think you are just giving them lots of goodies!
