        Hi guys,

While changing the litter box tonight, I noticed some small black bugs hanging around it. There was about 4 on the wall near the box. I looked the bunnies over and they don’t appear to have any bugs on them or in their ears. They are acting completely normally. I don’t see any more of these bugs but does anyone know what they might be? I’m super cleaning the house tonight but I’m not sure what else to do or what these things might be. They are not very fast or reactive. I was able to kill them easily. Any ideas???

No..I killed em and there are no more I can find. They don’t look like fleas though, slightly bigger and not fast or reactive. They were on the wall, not in the litter box, it’s just that they were on the wall right by the litter box whic made me worried. But I looked both boys over and they are bug free, acting normal…I don’t know. Maybe it’s a coincidence?

hmmmm. I don’t know. Could they have been just gnats? They could also be young flies that developed recently. (gnats are slower though) Did you have windows open where they could have come in from? gnats can also come in on new plants and/or food that is beginning to go bad too. They are attracted to moisture and certain types of plants.

google gnats and let us know if that is what you saw.    If you see that they are gnats — check your house plants for the source.

I think they may have just been gnats or young flies that got in through a hole in the screen? They may have been drawn to that wall since it was by the litter box that was due to be changed today. I cleaned the whole area and replaced the hay as well as the litter in case it was something that was in the hay. I guess I won’t worry unless I see more!

you would not see fleas on the wall- so it must be something from the environment attracted to the litterbox- not sure what though.

I’ve heard of carpet bugs being in/near cat litter boxes because they eat fur, fabric, woolen type textures. I don’t know what type of litter you’re using but I’d imagine a carpet bug would be attracted to compressed paper type litters.

I never have heard of carpet bugs, but when I went t to check them out they definitely did not look like gnats, more like little beetles. JCC –could the bugs you saw fly?

I am not really sure if they could fly…I just squished em. I guess I should have examined them further? I haven’t seen any more though since I killed those and cleaned/refreshed the whole bunny area. If I see them again, I will try to look at them more and take a picture.

I found something similar in the living room litter box. I was totally grossed out but I know it must have been something from outside because I know they were not animal-related bugs. Yucky.
