Right now my area is dealing with serious thunderstorms and possible tornadoes and my poor bun is *freaking out* She’s in her carrier in the “safe room” in our house. I’m wondering what others have done to calm their rabbits in weather like this. Also, right now I’ve been using an old small dog crate as her carrier but it’s quite large for a 3lb bun and pretty heavy to carry around if I needed to move quickly. I’ve been planning to get a new one anyway but since I already had something usable I haven’t gotten one yet. Any suggestions on a good carrier? I’ve looked at soft-sided carriers but if anyone has recommendations that would be wonderful.

I guess I’m basically wondering what works for others for being prepared to care for a bun during severe weather/potential natural disaster.

This is the carrier I use:

          http://www.amazon.com/Whisperer-Cesar-Millan-Load-Travel/dp/B0023D1J66

I like it because it has a top door which is so easy to get your bun into. It might be a little to big for her because I use it for my bonded rabbits who are each 6lbs each. But you can get a smaller size.

you could also get this one:

          http://www.petco.com/product/7397/Petmate-Double-Door-Deluxe-Pet-Carriers.aspx?cm_mmc=CSEMGooglebase-_-Dog-_-Petmate-_-488763&mr:trackingCode=4D01EC15-8381-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA

I would also keep a little bag with some: pellets, hay, water bowl or water bottle, and keep it by your carrier so you can grab it, and go fast if you need to.

A few years ago, there was a really good thread about this.   https://binkybunny.com/FOR…aspx  (if you scroll down to member, ScarletRose, (who was a leader at the time), she had some really great tips and good links to further discussions.

Be sure though to NOT respond to those threads as they are old.  If you want to comment about them, be sure to come back to this thread to do so.  (I made sure the link opened up in a new window to make it easier)

            EDIT:  Link fixed (hopefully)

I have the same brand of carrier mocha has, 2 of them actually. A medium sized one, and a small one. The small one fits moose nicely by himself, or the girls snugly. moose is 4lbs so it isn’t bad I like the 2 doors, so I can pop him in and out of the top door if he’s being stubborn (as usual). They can be a bit expensive, but not too bad for the small one. And definitely worth it! And the dog whisperer stickers peel right off

Hey BB, that link didn’t work for me. Can you repost? I’d love to read it, thanks!

Ooop! Thanks Lani, I fixed the link above now, but just for convenience here it is again:  https://binkybunny.com/FOR…aspx

Strange how this one will not open up in a new window even though I wrote to code to make sure it does. So, anyway, if you want to open this link up in a new window so you can easily return to this thread, (as there are alot of links with more info within the link I provided), then just press down the Ctrl key when you click on the link. (That always makes a new window)

Wow there is a lot of great info there! Definitely a good thing to review every now and again to make sure we’re all set. Thanks!

I would not recommend a soft sided carrier as the pet needs to be carefully watched whenever they are in it- and a rabbit might chew or dig. Especially if you are thinking of for emergency purposes- in case of emergency your bunny might be in a carrier longer than they would appreciate (even though it is to keep them safe) and they might dig out of boredom or frustration. And the last think you need to worry about is your bunny escaping the carrier if you are dealing with a natural disaster.

I agree with Katnip. I can’t even use a soft carrier for the vet because Bindi will dig like a mad bunny trying to destroy the floor.

                          Hi Lani,

I hope you, your family, and your bun are safe and sound!

Last month we had to do an evactuation for the tsunami after the Japan earthquake. We only live a quarter mile from the beach so we knew if the advisory was upgraded to a warning we would have to leave. Fortunately, we knew about the advisory about an hour before it was upgraded to a warning so we had a little extra time to prepare, as it sounds like you do as well.

We had Heff in his xpen when the sirens went off so we wouldn’t have to search for him under furnature or whatnot. I packed all of his things: food, hay, litter, and extra water just in case. We use a cage as his litter box and take the top off so when it was time to go, we put him in his soft carrier, stuck the top on his litter box and packed it up and left.

We ended up staying at a friend’s house in the central part of the island that night and Heffie was completely content in his cage for the night. I like the top load carrier listed about, because that would have eliminated the extra cage we had to bring along and you could put litter in there without having to worry about the bottom being ruined. I brought all of Heff’s food and hay, just in case we were evacuated longer than just the evening. I think it’s ok for them to have a little bit of room to move around in case they have to be in the carrier for a few days, though you’re right that it’s probably better to have something a little easier to move in a hurry.

Sending safe vibes your way, please do keep us posted on the weather over there so we know you’re okay!

Roxygirl, thanks for the well wishes. We made it through the storm ok but not without lots of wind/thunder/lightening and downed branches all over the neighborhood. Several cities near us were hit by tornadoes but we really lucked out that the worst of it skipped over us. Oreo was definitely shaken up by it and refused the treats I tried to offer her as a comfort and spent the night after the storm being moody and keeping to herself. Poor bun At least she’s back to her usual self now though!

I definitely think I’m going to look for a top loading carrier since it seems like it will be easier to get her in there in a hurry. I really appreciate all the input from everyone, I’ll be spending the next several days getting a good emergency kit prepared. Here’s hoping we’ll never have to use it though!

I got one of these yesterday from our local pet shop for $15. Its handy because with all our bunnies sometimes I dont have enough hands, but with this I can put it on my back or wheel it around while Stu Bob sits inside looking like a spoilt princess

Plus, its top loading so you can get them in and out easily.

and it has a thing on the back so you can click it into the seatbelt of your car so its safe in an accident.

Edit: I forgot to say that the outside is made of faux croc leather, but the inside is lined with heavy duty plastic so bunny cant chew or dig out, and its easy to clean. The wire is also really tough.

This is a really good topic-one we should all think about. The thread BB linked has some great tips too. It’s also important to never run out of food (in case you cannot get out to get rabbit food in a disaster) and keep bottled water on hand. One thing I just replaced that many people I know don’t have is my gas detector-it detects carbon monoxide, and two types of flammable gases-things you wouldn’t smell or know if there was a leak.

I hadn’t planned and we had a bit of a ‘drill’ in my old apartment -what happened was a boiler exploded-but what we experienced was a fire alarm while we are on the third story of a building and it’s 20 below outside. I grabbed one carrier and threw the bunnies in while dave started the car and we dashed out in our pyjama’s. Not a real disaster but I tell ya I was NOT prepared and that would have made it easier.

K&K, an interesting law passed here recently that all rental units had to have a carbon monoxide detector installed in every unit by April 1st. It’s a good law to have
