        Hi All,

Stopping by to ask a question about hay.

I’ve noticed lately that the Oxbow timothy hay that I’ve been buying has not been so soft lately.  It’s very hard and dry and like sticks.

I’ve been a little paranoid about this because my bunny died from eating this hay (he had a preforatted intestine from a piece of hay…it was so sharp)  I didn’t realize at the time that this could happen and when I felt the bag of hay that I was giving him and I noticed it had a lot of “sharp” pieces in it.  I took it back to the store at the time because I didn’t want to continue to give it to my other bunny.

Now all I do when I go to the pet stores is feel these bags of hay…both oxbow and kaytee … and notice that there are alot of sharp pieces of hay in them.  On rare occasions I will find a bag that is only soft hay and I will use that.  I had no choice this time but to buy a bag of hay with very dry pieces in it.

Has anyone else ever had this situation??  Am I being too paranoid in trying to keep my bunny safe?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

        Chris

I’ve noticed this too! The most recent bag I’ve ordered from my vet (that came directly from Oxbow) was really twiggy. I’d put my hand in the bag to refill the buns’ hay, and i would scratch myself quite often. I find that the twiggy-ness happens in cycles. I remember having really twiggy hay couple months ago. Hopefully this will just go away. I usually just pick out the twigs now the best I can and then hope for the best.

It is probably a first cutting.

I would recommend you try American Pet Diner Timothy Gold – you have to order it on-line however. It’s a second cut.

Or KMS Hayloft 2nd or 3rd cut which has to be ordered on-line.

I agree. Also, if you want to abandon timothy hay altogether, not something I’d recommend necessarily but other hays are good too, you can try Orchard Grass. It needs to be ordered online as well, but is very, very soft.
