So out of necessity I had to switch my pellet brand. I’m now feeding Oxbow Adult. At first all the buns were fussy and not interested, except Olivia. She will eat anything. But now Bindi devours them but Stormy refuses to touch them and it’s been almost a week. Which is strange because Bindi is usually the really fussy guy, not Stormy.

I’m just concerned because they’ve always had pellets; not a lot, less than 2 TBSP per day but still. And I’m worried about Stormy losing weight as he is approaching 7. I’m concerned his not eating pellets now will cause problems but I can’t go back to my old brand of pellets. His poos are very tiny lately too, not sure if that’s related or not.

        Any thoughts?

Leap of intuition, but my first thought is to check Stormy’s teeth. At 7, he is moving into the years where they could begin to give him some trouble, so a new pellet that he doesn’t like as much just might not feel worth it to him.

Having scared you with that notion, I think it’s not a real problem as long as he eats enough hay. If you think of them as being ground up hay, with some added vitamins, it’s kind of like that for their health. And sometimes it’s too much added fat, so they can certainly live without them given enough hay and veggies to stay healthy. At 7, he’s also used to being more set in his ways, so he many know how to get his slave to meet his needs by refusing the change in the hope that you will change back. Just let him come around, or have his teeth checked if they haven’t been lately.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on bringing Stormy in for a check up in the Spring so I will get his teeth checked at that time unless he has other problems before then.

I keep offering and replacing with fresh pellets every meal hoping he will stop being such a fussy little bugger. I’m going to try grinding them up with some veggie shreds and see if he eats them that way.

My rabbits who get pellets hardly ever eat them. I don’t worry as long as they eat other things and hay. I think too at this age their metabolism slows down because they just naturally slow down.

I have to bring Bindi in to see the vet in 7 days (ears)…I may just bring Stormy at the same time. That way she will probably charge me less to see them both at once.

My vet, who I love and respect, thinks they should not have them at all. Sooo as long as they eating tons of hay and get a good variety of veggies, they could do without for sure.
