Ok, so we still have lots of snow on the ground ( and more on the way).  But I’ve got the gardening itch and I’m thinking Ed would be in heaven with lots of super fresh veg.  Here’s what I am thinking: cilantro, parsley, basil, beets ( greens for Ed), brussel sprouts, lettuce, Pea pods and shoots.  What I’m really wondering is how much of each to plant.  I’m figuring that I’ll do as much herbs as I can fit i the herb garden ( maybe more basil as it doesn’t bolt like the others).  Brussel sprouts take a long time, so maybe i should not start as many of those.

What am I missing? And do you have any tips on gardening for buns?

Oh yeah, and we always prune our mulberry tree in spring.  Has anyone heard if rabbits can handle the branches?

OK, guys, help me with this. One or two of our members last year did some fabulous gardening and growing of fresh greens for their bunnies. I can’t remember who, unless it was our former FL, Moo. Anyway, if noone can remember and shoot them an email to join this discussion, you can try clicking the search button, enter keywords like “garden” or “growing food” and see which older posts pop up.

For reading only, please. We want new replies here, not reviving the older posts. Just a good resource for this type of inquiry. Thanks!

I made a garden last year. It was a lot of fun and i didn’t have to buy any veggies all summer long!

Note: this garden was for us and the bunnys so some of the veggies planted aren’t safe for them.

I garden every year for my family and the rabbits (and other animals, too!) I can’t wait to get started again this year!

I grow herbs indoors (I move the window box of parsley out during the warmer months). They really haven’t grown at all this winter due to lack of sunlight (even though they’re in a sunny east facing window, it’s just not enough light time). They’re good for treats and I’ll sit on the couch and pluck pieces off to feed the buns, but it’s not nearly enough to feed them for their daily meals. I’m kind of disappointed in that respect. Hopefully they grow like crazy once I can put them outside and then I’ll actually use them for feeding.

When we get a house (hopefully soon!) we want to start a garden in the backyard. We eat a lot of produce even without the bunnies and it would be great to grow some veggies for ourselves and some lettuce and herbs for the buns.

There are a couple of things that I would add to your list. One is carrots, so that you can have fresh carrot tops. Even if only tiny carrots form, you will still get nice tops that you can clip off as needed. The other veggie that I would recommend is dandelion greens. Johnny’s Selected Seeds sells a few different varieties. It’s the only place that I have seen these seeds. http://www.johnnyseeds.com/search.aspx?searchterm=dandelion&pagesize=15&list=1.

I’m a vegetarian so I always plant a garden for me and my buns. Last year, not sure, why our garden was terrible. Nothing wanted to grow. Hopefully it will be better this year. I usually plant (for the buns) 2 or 3 types of lettuce, cilantro, mint, parsley, carrots, and endive. This year I’m going to start my herbs inside and hopefully will have better luck with them. I’m going to try planting dandelion greens too.

ps. Bunny poos is great fertilizer!

I have some things in my yard that are bunny friendly; strawberries and raspberries (mostly for greens) and an apple tree. I planted herbs and kale but they didn’t do that well. Gardening isn’t really my thing.
When I was in my apartment I did a window box with marigolds, nastarium and several herbs. They loved it. I will definitely do this again.

My parents also have a fantastic bunny garden (hehehe ok it’s a normal garden but I pillage all year long!)-they have carrots, kale, romaine, strawberries, beets, and herbs.

I think you’ll love gardening-don’t forget to plant your favorites too!
