When I first got Belle, the lady I got her from told me she “had to get rid of her because her other rabbits were beating her up”, poor thing! And I was told the scab on her nose was a recent bite. But it didn’t heal, and instead (over the past week or so) had gotten much worse. She started sneezing occasionally a while ago, but I assumed it must just be allergies to dust or hay because there was no discharge, and it started right after we moved in to a new place. But the past week it got much worse, so I brought her in to the vet and they cleaned it up and found it was actually dried on mucus (ew..) and not a scab at all. They swabbed it and it is a bacterial infection. I feel so bad this has gone on for so long now, but at the same time a little annoyed because when I got her, I brought her to the vet to get her all checked and they said the scab looked fine and not to worry about it. But it wasn’t okay

So now that the “scab” is gone and the mucus and bacteria has been irritating the area so it’s hairless and really red and I feel so terrible everytime I look at her poor little nose I kind of started thinking it was maybe Pasteurella, which is why I brought her in to the vet, but it should have been sorted out way before now. Yesterday we started her on Baytril twice a day. And now I’m worried because up until now, she has been acting 100% okay- her regular hyper, little piggy self. And now she is barely eating her veggies and has no enthusiasm to fresh hay or her pellets, like she did before. And she’s also sneezing a LOT more than before. Is this normal? Do the antibiotics kind of make things worse when they first start working? I know they can really mess up a bunny’s GI tract, so I’m worried about her slowing down on eating. Would the Baytril upset her stomach in any way? I just want my poor baby to feel better already

Anyone have experience with this at all?

How did the vet determine she had pasturella? Did they actually do a culture?

Yes, they took a swab sample and tested it. They also checked for mites, but she was cleared for that.

That’s good that they tested. It may take a week or more for the symptoms to subside.

Most rabbits do pretty well with baytril but if you feel it’s causing her upset, then you would definitely want to talk to the vet. It may be a coincidence that her symptoms are getting worse rather than the antibiotics causing them to get worse – I think it’s most likely that rather than the antibiotics…which may also be causing her not to have as much of an appetite.

Do you have critical care just in case she stops eating?

What dosage of baytril was she put on? Did they give the correct dosing syringe? (I’m a little wary as a member here had a mix up with baytril so thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask).

Today is day 4 of the antibiotics, she’s been getting 1.6mL twice a day (does that sound about right?), and she seems to be feeling quite a bit better (she’s binkying around like crazy at the moment). Her sneezing fits have decreased significantly and she’s acting more normally now. She’s still not 100% herself though. She’s eating, but not like normal and all she’ll eat is romaine lettuce (primarily) and some pellets. Her poops are smaller too, and I suspect it’s because she’s not eating as much hay as normal. I wonder if I should pick up some alfalfa to entice her and that way she is at least getting some hay in her? And yes, I do have some critical care just in case, but she hasn’t completely stopped eating yet, she’s just being very selective and eating less than normal.

Edit: SORRY, it’s 0.16mL, my mistake.

I would stick with the hay you have and not worry about adding any alfalfa. She will be a bit off during the course of the baytril and the healing process, but she’s moving in the right direction. Just be sure to complete the full course of the dosage prescribed, even if she seems better sooner. You’ll probably find an increased interest in the hay as time goes on as well.

Good to know, I always just get so worried when their eating habits change. Thanks!
