We just adopted 2 females that are about 4 mos. They were raised together and while I suspect they might be mother/daughter, we were told they were both 4 mos. They seem bonded to me, the groom each other and snuggle up to eachother to sleep, etc. The bigger one gets very agitated when we try to take the smaller one out to hold.

If I have them spayed in the next month or so will they have to rebond? Am I using the term correctly? What will I need to do to reintroduce them or do I need to do anything? Can they be together after surgery to heal or will they need to be seperated?

I had a previous rabbit spayed but she didn’t have a playmate so I didn’t have to think about any of this.

Should I spay before they start to spray or act aggressive or can I wait until they show signs? Nothing yet though….

        Thanks

If they both are around 4 mos, they probably haven’t started hitting the height of hormonal behavior yet. Unspayed females can become very territorial after bunny puberty hits…they are probably getting along just fine now because they are technically still babies. In any case, there are many health benefits to spaying female rabbits, I would definitely encourage it for both!

My female did not become naughty until she was around 4 months of age.
Wouldn’t mother bunny be a little older than the baby?

The girls would need to be re-bonded after being spayed. I would recommend keeping them away from each other for a month because the hormones need to settle down.

Our first 2 girls were perfectly bonded until about 5 months age when we got them both spayed. We’ve had zero success in rebonding the past 6 years.

Ehh I’m not sure I would entirely attribute the changes in behavior to spaying. The procedure is usually done when most buns start to near bun puberty, and baby buns pretty much always get along with each other, whereas adults…not so much.

Rabbit personalities may change as they get older (from baby to adult). I would suggest spaying the girls, as they may fight and things could get ugly The chances of reproductive cancer is too high to leave them unspayed, and the girls may experience false pregnancies which are not good to witness (fur pulling, nest making).

I got my rabbit from the time she was about 8 weeks old and her personality has changed and grown into the diva she is now. The vet that spayed her said she was a big ball of hormones.

Of course, IF she was the mother she would be older.  I’m not sure if she is the mother though. We were told they were both 4 mos but since one is a good deal larger, I wondered if they told me they were the same age to get them adopted easier?

That’s too bad that they might not rebond…..but we’ll defintiely get them spayed when the time comes.

Well, bonding is very very possible, but it is a lot of work. The pay off is great though – snuggling bunnies. There is a lot of bonding support here, and there are members that have bonded trios, quartets. A pair of 2 rabbits is a very common bond as well

My bunny is larger than her sisters. She is a false dwarf, which means she lacks the dwarf gene as well as the typical dwarf characteristics (she has longer ears, legs, slightly bigger head).
