I went to our local feeders supply petstore today to see what brands of rabbit hay, and feed they have, even though I would prefer to switch Aspen to Oxbow there’s no one within 25 miles of me that sells Oxbow, so that would mean ordering it, and in most cases I would pay more for shipping than the actual bag of oxbow pellet and hay, so it seems silly. The sell mostly sunseed products, which I didn’t like the look of, but they have a brand called Sunaturals, the hay looked really good, so I bought a small bag to mix with what she’s eating now, which is what was given to me by her previous owner, which is Kaytee. I didn’t pick up the food, because she still has so much of the bag left that was given to me, she should be ready for a switch in another week, roughly.

Has anyone heard of Sunaturals? The hay seems very soft, and green, much more fresh looking than the kaytee brand. I’m just not sure about the food. What should I look for?

The best kind of food is a plain timothy pellet, most mixes are made more for looks and to appeal to the owner rather than the rabbit. So a plain timothy pellet is far better for your bun.

The Sunatural’s is just plan timothy, there’s nothing else in that, I guess my question is what should I look for on the bag to indicate that it’s a good food, I mean walmart sells “smallworld” I think it is, and those are plan pellets, but everything I’ve read says they are junk…

Check the Drs. Foster & Smith website… This is the cheapest I’ve ever found, FAR cheaper than what is in local stores.

For a 5 pound bag of timothy pellets, it’s only $8 on sale right now. Petsmart’s price is always $12 for a 5 pound bag. Shipping is a flat rate, no matter how much you order. So to make it cost-effective, order enough for a few months time. I also order my hay from them now in 50 pound boxes. This is STILL included under the flat shipping rate!

Ordering online requires you to think ahead of when you have to order, but it’s been so much easier to for me.

Thanks Beka! I will check them out. As much as I LOVE binkybunny’s store, because I’m in KY the shipping is just crazy! Its good to know I can still get Oxbow though! I cringe putting the Hartz food in her bowl, and to be honest she really doesn’t eat them…. not that I blame her! but she gets 2 cups of “salad” a day, and all the hay her little heart desires!

Before you give up on Oxbow, I think I went on their website once and they had a list of distributors where you could input your zip code and find the nearest place selling their products. Thing to watch for: local vets will sell Oxbow in their offices. Long before I found it at Petsmart or on line, I bought it from two vets within a 12 mile radius of my home. You could call a few local exotic vets and ask if they carry it. If they carry one kind, they are usually willing to place an order for what you like in their next shipment if you say you’ll buy it from them when it comes in.

Amazon.com sells oxbow, and if you order enough you get free shipping. I just saw this yesterday! Although it’s weird, they aren’t very clear with what size the bag is…there is one that says 10lbs for 10 bucks and 5lbs for 17 bucks? Meh. Strange.
