I was just wondering what you all thought of Mazuri brand. My sister went to get food for me and got that instead of Oxbow and now I have a big bag of it. She said it was cheaper but I’m worried it might not be good. Let me know please. Thanks!

If your bun is an adult, I wouldn’t feed that as it is an alfalfa based pellet, not timothy. but it looks decent for babies at first glance

Do you have a little leftover oxbow to mix with it? Switching food with no slow adjustment could hurt your buns stomach.

You cannot switch brands suddenly. Can you return the bag and go get the Oxbow?

I do have a little left over and can mix. I have about a week or week and a half of the oxbow left that I can slowly mix. The bag of mazuri that I have says the first ingredient is timothy hay. I gave him one pellet to see if he even liked it and he did. He’s been on oxbow since I got him at 1 month old (kind of a rescue) and I was kinda peeved at my sister. She said I was rediculous for spending so much money on a 2 lb bunny. A 3 lb bag of oxbow lasts Pogo about 2 months sometimes. It’s really not that expensive for him lol. This 5 lb bag of Mazuri seems gigantic! I’d hate to waste but I’d be switching him back to oxbow when it’s gone….so maybe I shouldn’t  switch at all. Do rabbit rescues take any kind of food donations?

Mazuri is a preferred brand for chinchillas because it is high quality and doesn’t contain “junk”. We would get it for our chinchillas and it was great for keeping weight on my boy who was a very finicky eater. I imagine their bunny food is good too.

I would really not take the time to switch him onto a brand of food. then switch him back. It actually takes 3 weeks to switch a bunny to a new type of food (WEEK 1: 1/4 new, 3/4 old…. WEEK 2: 1/2 new, 1/2 old…. WEEK 3: 3/4 new, 1/4 old).

Your sister is not responsible for your rabbit’s health, so while I am not debating the quality of Mazuri (I honestly know very little about it), I am stressing the importance of consistency. Rabbit (and dog and cat) diets cannot be switched “willy-nilly”. The digestive system is far too delicate. Oxbow is a fantastic food and I would not switch him off for a short-time only to switch him back a couple months later.

Thanks for your advice. I’m not gonna mess with it. I went and bought a new bag of oxbow but they won’t let me return the mazuri. I guess I’ll call the No Splitting Hares rabbit rescue by me and see if they want it.
