I just discovered my bunnies LOVE fresh apples, since rorschach grabbed a slice out of my hand and ran away with it hahahaha. I let him and Nikka nibble at it, but then I took it away before they finished it because I wasn’t sure how much they can actually eat. do any of you guys give your buns apples, and how much?

Hehe, my buns love apples too..but I think they’re crazier about bananas.  It’s so cute watching them enjoy fruit it’s hard not to give them more, lol.  From the House Rabbit Society, here are the recommended daily fruit intake guidelines http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#mature

ahh thanks! it was so funny I’ve never seen rorschach get so greedy with food before! he even ran all the way into his carrier and turned his back to me and nikka so he could gobble it all up. later he even came up to me while I was chewing a piece and searched my face for it lol

If they get a large dose of sugar when not used to it, it may cause a tummy upset but if they’re accustomed to a bit of fruit, they can tolerate it pretty well. Depends alot on the individual bunny. I took my nephew to kindy alot last year and the teachers bunny there would often have a whole apple (half eaten) in the cage. No way i’d let mine have that much but some do tolerate it better than others.

When Jersey was younger she helped herself to an apple. I removed it twice from her and she later got to another one. She was fine healthwise but she was very determined that day!

Haha sometimes when I’m munching on some fruit in hand and go pet Peppy, she gets super excited and jumps all over me…then I feel bad because it’s not for her! I’m sure it usually wouldn’t hurt for them to accidentally ingest more sugar than recommended one day, like how it wouldn’t kill me to completely pig out on sugar one day…or maybe more than one day …just not good for long-term health to keep up the diet.

As someone who left the buns in a the care of her husband for one day and came home to discover he had fed then an entire apple each (and these were big 6oz apples) I have found it not the be fatal – apart from for any soft furnishing the excess cecals caused by the apple may end up smeared on.

I really wouldn’t recommend too much though – start of with a very small piece and work up. But not all the way up to whole apples.

lol jerseygirl! you’ve got one hungry bun! =P

for now I’m just going to give them half a slice each [not everyday of course]. I have to split it up because rorschach apparently refuses to share his with Nikka, or anyone else for that matter -_______-

Dutchess gets two or three chunks of apple, altogether no bigger than half the size of my palm, and fairly thin. I rotate with her, some days she doesn’t get any fruit, some days she gets apple, banana, raisins, or craisins. I try to only feed fruit maximum once per day, minimum once every three days. ^__^ She’s definately a fruit eater as well. She gallops for it. And binkies after.

When I eat apples, I cut them up anyways. So I cut off a thin slice and then cut that in half. She usually eats the whole slice, but I always cut it up just in case she doesn’t. nothing peeves me more than wasting perfectly good fruit! lol She snubbed a yummy raspberry. I bought some mixed fruit and it was one of the few raspberries I had! lol

JG, I love that pix. LOL

Generally nothing is good for any of us in large amounts, and a whole apple, as compared to a bunny’s size, is large. A chunk about the diameter of a nickel or quarter is a good size, or a slice about 1/4 ” thick. It won’t harm them to eat more, just you’ll end up with a chunky bunny, instead.
