Hey guys, this might be weird considering im in a bunny forum, but ugggh I have no clue where else to go. I just came from posting on a chicken forum but dont know how long they will take to answer back. Anyways maybe somone here might be able to help. 2 weeks ago my daughter was playing in the the backyard with the buns and I was in the kitchen cooking, i saw my little munchkin running up the stairs flung the laundry room door open and ran into the kitchen with a CHICKEN!!!!! She was holding a hen in her hands and the hen was obviously hurt. I didnt want to touch it and uggggh i stuck my daughter in a hot bath ASAP!!! she loves animals, i havae a feeling she’s gonna be a vet when she’s older. The hen apparently has a broken leg since it cant stand on one of its legs, its completely limp. I felt sorry for the poor thing and got a basket put some hay in it and laid her there. she cant really walk she drags herself, i have her outside since im not sure if she might be carrying some disease. I dont know NOTHING about chickens. well 3 days ago i found her laying on her back and i instantly thought she was dead, i put on some gloves to get her before Luna saw her and when i go to pick her up she starts flapping her wings!! scared me hald to death i even screamed.  so ive noticed now that she falls to her side and then flips on her back and stays like that, she will even tuck her head into her chest. And then when i pick her her whole neck goes limp, like she’s dead?? what should i do?? Ive NEVER had chickens in my life so really dont know anything about them. im scared it might be infected with something and Luna keeps on picking her up even after i tell her no, and the bunnies are the same wasy so ive restriceted their access to the premises where the chicken is, im scared my buns will get sick. They are SUPER curious of this weird creature though, lol oh heres a pic of how she looks, i got this off the internet apparently she’s some brahmahen type of breed or something like that. She looks exactly like that!! Ive NEEEEVER seen a chicken with feather on its feet, i found it kinda curious.

I am sending you her email so hopefully she can help you with questions, but I bet that foot will need tending to from a vet  poor chickie.  I also sent her this link so you guys can talk here or in email

I don’t know a thing about chickens but I would keep them separate from the rabbits for sure. She sounds beautiful. Have you called your vet? Perhaps they can help.

AWWWW thanks Lintini, ill do that! Oh and Sarita I did but they told me i would have to contact an aviary vet or something like that. which ive heard is pretty expnsive. My husband said that if the foot has been broken for a while, they probably wont be able to fix it I give her soft food i bought from a local pet store, but i dont want to handle her alot cuz i dont even know where she came from and im just really scared she might be sick. And Sarita dont worry i am keeping the buns away. she’s really docile though.

If her foot has been broken awhile it will start to heal in a weird position and she will be able to walk on it . If it’s a fresh break then she will need to see a vet, or u can make a stilt that straps to the leg above the break and she will learn to walk on it.
She’s going limp in her neck because she’s being submissive. she could be flipping because she’s off balance. Have to keep rolling her straight or lean her against something or she will give up and die.

If u can get any choke feed for her and keep her in a small box or pen so she can sit propped up, it will help her gain balance. If she gets her balance back well she can live quite happily as a 1 legged chicken. This is quite common. But when she square it’s probably hurting her foot that’s broken. May take 4 weeks to heal and gain balance.

Kafrn thats what i did, i put her against a wall in a basket with hay and she flips onto her back!!! she flips back onto her feet when she wants, cuz ive seen her do it. And really the going limp from her neck is her way of being submissive?!!!! i did not know that, i thought maybe something was wrong with her. her leg is completely limp also, she cant stan on it at all, it seems the break might be where her leg connect to her body. She’s gone whole nights with being on her back and when she wakes up she rolls back on to her legs.

Hi Moz! I’m sorry to hear about your troubles and the poor little chook I saw you already found the Happy Hen House forum. They’re the only other place I’ve looked to for help aside from my vet when it comes to my bird. The chicken you found should not be sick, especially with anything contagious. However, she may have an infection from her injury, which may explain why she is rolling on her back (or she may be doing that due to discomfort). That being said, I would continue to keep her apart from my other animals/children because right now she’s in no condition for much interaction. All the vets I have taken my birds to in the past had little or no prior experience working with chooks but did quite well and were very nice to my birds. I don’t see why you would have to seek out an avian vet unless the vets in your area refuse to treat her. Now, one thing to consider is that a vet may say the best treatment is to have her put down. It’s not something pleasant to consider, but to keep in mind and be ready for it emotionally

As per food, try canned or defrosted frozen whole kernel corn, cracked corn, lettuce/greens of some sort, ZuPreem makes some fancy dry bird foods that I soak in water and give my bird (this is expensive food and certainly not needed right now). And, as with all critters, make sure she has clean bedding and access to clean water She sounds like a lovely little bird =/ possibly an escapee or lost one.

You may also want to check around and see if she belongs to anyone. Someone may be out looking for her.

Chickens can go like rabbits too when held upside down. Maybe you’re seeing that when she flips herself upside down?

WOW!!! thanks guys, Bridgette thank you so much for your advice!! and yes i went to the Happy Hen forum you guys have a pretty nice set-up there. Ill try and do everything you said. She’s sleeps in the garge since its pretty cold here right now, but she ahs water, food, and a really nice and comfortable setup. Ill see if i can find a vet that will see her, see if they can do anything for her leg. Oh and monkeybun I did go around and as but nothing yet. Im not planning on keeping her since i have enought with 8 buns and 1 dog. But once it gets better ill talk with a local animal shelter see if they can do anything for her, she is pretty, but chicks kinda scare me, lol. I have my husband go and give her food and water. Im not a chicken type of person. lol. She is really pretty though. she’s kinda on the slim side so im guessing she’s probably been lost for a while.

Sorry if my info was wrong, was going by prior experience with ostriches / emus / poultry etc but every situation is different. Hope chookie is ok. Our chickens and ostriches used to limp at the neck when picked up when young , I think it was their way of playing dead.

Ditto the vet…even if you don’t want to keep it or spend money you can surrender the chicken there. If the chicken looks like that picture-it’s not a broiler chicken so it’s likely someones pet, or a prized chicken. People generally don’t eat that kind-keep them for eggs etc. (I’ve had friends who keep them but don’t know much about them). Definitely keep her away from the bunnies-you don’t want anything passed. It could be a break or it could be a defective leg-I’ve heard of them being born like that.

On the pet note-someone may be looking for her…Id post on craigslist, call the radio and the local police maybe depending-someone may be desperately looking for their pet.

And if you do decide to keep said chicken and she makes it-nothing beats fresh eggs. Chickens are smart and fun to train But check your local laws…in our suburbs you can keep pot bellied pigs or chickens…in Edmonton it’s illegal with a big fine. So make sure you’re ok to keep chikypoo if you are going to

Warning: This won’t be the end…I brought home the first mangled birdat about five  though it was a robin  I n no time I was home with baby squirrels, cats and dogs…. heheh

LOL I think you need to my three year old, lol, she was the one that brought the first bun into my home, Apple, she found her at a park, when the babysitter tried to make her leave it, she strarted crying, when i got home i found a big pee stain on her bed (not hers, the buns) and a trail of poop leading to her closet. Then she brought home our now present dog, and after we got Chomper and Zoe, and ugggh well now we have a one legged chicken she found in the back yard. she loves animals and really is patient and caring with them, people tell me that its because she doesnt have any siblings but i think its just her nature. Oh and 2morrow im calling a vet that was recomended to me to see how much he will charge me. Oh and my husband told her last night about how hens lay eggs so today in the morning she woke up super early ran to the gargae and picked up the chicken to see if she had laid any eggs. LOL!!! I have a feeling she’s not gonna let me get rid of this chicken. :I

I don’t know much about chickens, but if you still need medical help (at least more input) try avianavenue.com. I have two parrots so I hang out there a lot, and quite a few members have chickens…actually I think there’s a chicken subforum as well. If you post in the 911 subforum you should get some replies pretty quickly.

And if you’re past that stage, never mind lol! Good luck figuring out what to do with her next! :p

Eh-I had a brother I still brought them home-she’s an animal person like her mom no doubt

LOL That’s awesome she sounds so smart! Now you have a pet chicken I can walk you through some chicken tricks….dog trainers-the good ones-practice on chickens because if you can train a chicken you can train anything LOL But seriously you can teach them tricks-like ‘flying’ up a new guest that’s funny to see

LMAO!!!!!! will see if we keep it, im not sure we can afford another pet. Plus Luna had been asking for a bunny with floppy ears, her exact words were “mommy i want a bunny that has ears like eyore” so she’s gonna have to pick chicken or floppy eared bun. I have to go and boil some egss for the chicken, i was just informed it’s a good source of protein for her.
