I did a search but didn’t find my answer.  I know oat hay can be used instead of timothy hay.  But is it fattening?  Cause I bought some oxbow hay at petsmart and gave some to lolli tonite and she’s been chowing down off and on all night.   So I think I may have found a heathly treat for her – as long as it’s not fattening like alfalfa hay.

This is funny, I was about to make a topic about this as well! I received a small sample from the binkybunny store I have purchased some Oat, Wheat, and Barley hay a few months ago and she did not like the Oat at all. But.. for some reason, some bunny decides she LOVES the mature oat kind

Is there a difference between regular oat and mature oat? O_o;; I never realized how golden and shiny shiny Oat hay is
Chacha scarfed down some of the pieces of the mature oat hay that came with her tunnel haven. I am saving the rest for Halloween (get it, Halloween candy, hehehe).
          XD

I didn’t know mine liked it either until I got a sample with an order too! lol

ok stupid me. I looked at the packaging and it’s not any more fattening that timothy hay. LOL Duh…when in doubt, read the packaging. haha

Brittany – I don’t know what the difference is but I believe I read somewhere that certain oat hays are sweeter.  Maybe it’s the newest cut?  i’m sure someone who really does know what they are talking about will be able to help you.  lol

My 3 loooove oat hay. It is sweeter, but less fibre, so I give it occasionally as a treat

It’s not fattening unless it includes the seed heads which hay for rabbits is not supposed to.

This is oxbow oat hay and I think I did see some seed heads in there. She’ll still be getting the timothy hay and then the oat hay as a treat since she seems to love it.

if the seed heads are empty it’s OK

I don’t know about it being less fibre then timothy. There used to be a hay chart on a guinea lynx forum that showed the hay “specs”. It’s not available now.  But it showed oat was same if not more in fibre then the grass hays. Edit: there is a chart still available ( http://www.guinealynx.info/hay_chart.html ) but not the one that listed fibre. That one was by agricultural department and listed hay values.

I’m still trying to sort out whether the seeds are ok or not. For now I remove them but RabbitPam mentioned her vet said they were the flowers and fine for the rabbits. After hearing that term and looking things up I’m learning that the seed is not fully developed and high in carbs until right near end of growing. So when it’s cut for hay, the seed/grain hasn’t reached this stage. I don’t know….it’s a bit confusing.

I don’t think oat is at all fattening. I think you do have to be careful in feeding wheat and barley hays though.
