Hey guys just posting for moral support! Koori’s spay is on Wednesday! I’m a little worried but also I was getting fed up with the marking behaviour!  The same vet is doing the op that did my other two bunnies and he is a specialist so hopefully everything will be ok. Once she’s healed up and the month is up I’ll start bonding her with Mizu and Umi. They mostly ignore her when she approaches their cage now so I’m taking that as a good sign! Any tips on things I should do before and after the op?

Vibes for an easy recovery. The most important thing is that she eats soon after the surgery so watch for that. Let us know how it goes on Wednesday!

you’ve done this twice before……you should be giving me tips Oliver is getting neutered (2nd attempt) on Thursday…..I plan on having a small area blocked off with blankets, food and water so that he can recoop in there, rather than in his cage. When our first bunny was spayed, I found myself laying on the floor with her all night just trying to get her to eat and drink :/ and JUST IN CASE I have some oxbow critical care on hand…should he not want to eat on his own.

            Hope all goes well!!

Hey everyone just to let you know I have Koori home. The nurse said it went well, though she pulled her IV line out twice during recovery! She’s not a happy bunny but shes been home around half an hour. She nibbled a carrot but apart from that is just sitting still in her cage. She licked me on the way home and nudged me for strokes a minute ago in her cage. The nurse said no jumping or running so my question is what shall I do with her this evening? Leave her in her cage or have her in my room she can’t have both as she needs to jump to get to her cage. Koori is normally free range at night and spends part of it on my bed!

I would keep her in her cage. She is most likely still recovering from the pain meds and anesthesia too – make sure she stays out of drafts too. You want her to keep warm as they have problems regulating their body temperature from the anesthesia.

I’ll put the heating on. I’ve got a blanket over me at the moment but I don’t usually worry about the buns as they have their fur! Its 10 degrees C outside! Shes been hopping around her cage, drunk a bit and is now giving me bunny evils!

The blanket over the cage should help keep the drafts out. She most likely will not even eat a thing until tomorrow…my experience with spays it that it could take 48 to 72 hours for them to return to normal. She may only nibble on something starting tomorrow so don’t be alarmed if tonight she wants nothing. Make sure some fresh greens and herbs are available to her though – usually greens are what they will eat first and pellets last.

Definitely keep her in the cage fr a couple days. If she has any pain meds, they will make her think she is more healed than she is, so you will haev to be the meanie and keep her locked up so she can’t hurt herself.

                        Ditto the cage.

I find it’s not so much the surgery but being at the vet all day-that makes them sooo tired that night. Doesn’t matter what my bunnies have been in for-if they were at the vet for the whole day they are tired and out of sort that evening (they usually sleep during the day, so being in a well lit noisy place disturbs the beauty rest!) I’d just offer her favorite veggies and pellets and keep everything quiet and dark so she can rest.

As Sarita said-they do take a few days to get back to normal. Boys have it sooooo easy yet again

If you haven’t noticed yet but do-if your bun has wet stains around her eyes, that’s just a gel they use for surgery to keep the eye lubricated and she’s fine When I saw that the first time I was freaked right out, but it’s just gel

Oh and speaking from experience-they do forgive you

                          How is she doing today?
My favorite tip: if you need to examine her stitches and site for redness or swelling, hold a treat piece above her nose so she has to stand up for it. Put a small hand mirror on the floor next to her, so you can see her belly in the mirror and don’t have to pick her up and turn her over to look at the site.

She’s doing well. She will eat any fresh veg I give her and has had a tiny nibble on her hay. She’s hopping around and is chewing on her wooden hideout in her cage! She really wants to come out but I’m trying hard to ignore bunny stares! She’s grooming quite a lot and I’m keeping an eye out that she’s not licking the wound too much! She took her medicine this morning easily and let me lift her front paws to look at her tummy!
Should I stop the fresh veg now to encourage her back to the hay and pellets? Thanks for all the support guys! I do worry about the buns!!

At this stage giving her the veg if that’s what she favours is fine. She should go for the other things when her full appetite returns.
