OK.  So, now that I’m a little paranoid I’m going to be bombing you with questions about the boys!  I don’t know what type of pellets they were on just that they were timothy based.  They said they’ve had a lot of different kinds being in foster for that long.  So I’m wondering how to do this the right way.  Here is the info that they gave me about their feeding.

I feed them a cup of pellets every other day, unlimited timothy hay (which they love) and carrots, apples, bananas, strawberries, and different leafy lettuces about once or twice a week.  I havent had any tummy problems with them so that should be a relief.  The two of them will share a whole apple, each will get a carrot or each a banana so they have had pretty large quantities with no problems

I would like to get them on to a better routine and give them greens daily.  Also, I can’t mix the pellets with mine because I wasn’t given any of theirs.  I use APD Timmy and they have already eatten a lot of the Ochard grass hay I had for Hugo.  I have heard of people doing only hay after adopting for a while to change their diet.  I’m just trying to be careful.  They are both just about 5 lbs.   Any advice on how to do this for them?

That is an interesting diet but I suppose it’s due to a wide variety of reasons. I think the pellets you are going to give are fine since they are high quality. Their diets have been pretty high in sugar already so I think you would be safe to start them on a better variety of greens. Luckily they are used to a higher sugar content but they still appear to be very healthy and a good size as well, not overweight. It’s good as well they love their hay. I say continue with the pellets at that level and the unlimited hay, cut back on the sweets and continue daily with the greens.

I was trying to go of the HRS guidelines but when I did that with Hugo his tummy got upset. I will only give them the recommended amount of treats and pellets for their weight. Is there a certain amount of greens daily that I should give as to not overload them since they only got it once or twice a week?
I was very happy about the hay! The second they got it they stuck their heads in and ate for a long time. That’s something I’m not use to seeing. =)

I think you are right – start of the greens slowly since they are used to pellets and hay.

Thanks. Maybe I’ll start out with a cup a day of romaine and add from there.

When you introduce a type of green for the first time usually the general advice is to start very slowly, like just a piece of a romaine leaf the first day, a larger piece the second, maybe a whole leaf the third. This way you can monitor their droppings and make sure they’re not affected. Once you know they tolerate a good quantity of that first veggie you can start adding a second one gradually in the same way. It’s a bit tedious, but it helps you make sure that the rabbit responds well to each veggie.

I’m not sure why people feed a higher amount of pellets every other day? Is it just that they can’t be bothered to give some pellets each day? Strange. I’m assuming you’re going to feed them a 1/2 cup EACH day… which is a good amount for buns their size.

Yes Beka, I am. I think between working full time, running the shelter and all the fosters (they have over 40 right now and 2 people in charge) that it’s just what worked for her. I want to get them on a good, stable, healthy diet now.

Well I think it really depends on the rabbit. Some will scarf down the full cup the first day instead of pacing themselves while other will eat it throughout the two days. If your rabbits do eat it gradually over two days it really doesn’t matter if you give the pellets to them in the larger 1 cup quantity every other day.
