My buns have been on a low calcium diet for three weeks now. They were getting 50g of pellets at breakfast and the same again with veggies for dinner, which was right for their weights, but now they’re only getting the breakfast portion. Plus, we’ve stopped the kale, spinach and spring greens that were the bulk of the diet and we’re now eating a big pile of romaine and red lettuce with combos of carrot, pepper, apple, brussels sprouts, small amounts of cabbage, parsley and coriander/cilantro. I’ve figured they can have bigger amounts of these as they’re calorie intake from pellets has halved, much as BB’s Jack does. We’ve got over the tantrums that accompanied the change now, and it seems to have had a few effects:

        • All their veggies get eaten now, apart from the odd, rare piece – and they’re getting bigger portions than they were.
        • Their hay consumption has gone up. They spend the afternoon nomming on it once they’ve guzzled their pellets.
        • Their poops are larger and healthier looking: there were regularly tiny bullet like poops before.
        • They have so much more energy – honest! More binkies, Bisto has remembered how to jump and climb, levels of bunstruction have rocketed, they seem to spend less time lounging and more time being naughty  This is true of Bisto – who has no health problems and is on the diet just because he shares his space with Oxo.

So I’m really pleased! I’m going to talk it over with my vet at the next check up, but I think I’d like to stick with the changes. I wondered how this compared with your buns diets? What do you think – does my feeding regime sound improved or could I be imagining some of the effects?

That sounds like a healthy diet and a good variety. I don’t do kale, spinach or spring mix either – my rabbits love the black kale but that is pricey and I haven’t bought in in ages – spring mix just spoils way to easy. I do give carrot frequently but no brussel sprout, pepper or apple. The bulk of my rabbits diets are either romaine or green leaf lettuce, basil, mint, dill and cilantro. However my rabbits are older – over 7 years old so they aren’t too active anyway. Only a few get pellets and they are voraciously eating them (except Pepe).

Mine eat hay pretty good – not great, but good…except Pepe – I have 2 rabbits that get no pellets at all.

I think if this is working for you and you are pleased with the results you should stick with it.
