Franz has numbers and a stamp of some sort in both his ears… I don’t think they will ever come off on their own…. it bothers me. Does anyone know about removing this or should I just leave it?

Some bunnies were branded by the old breeders/owners, I guess. If it the numbers and stamp were branded on, I don’t think it’s removable. Maybe it’s not permanent though. I saw a rabbit with the SPCA that had a stamp on his ear. The foster mom told me it would be there forever.

Some have ear tattoos. I wish they wouldn’t do this or that there was a better way. Can you ask where you got him from whether it’s permanent or not?

They are probably tattoos. If he was from a breeder, this is normal for them to mark their rabbits. I don’t know if you ever chose to go the breeder route again, if you can have a prior arrangement with them that they not tattoo your rabbit’s ears since they are solely for pet purposes…

This topic has come up before, and the other bizarre thing is that there doesn’t seem to be any universal system for tattooing, it’s just whatever the breeder decides to do.

Zeus has a tattoo in his ear, so as the others mentioned, it may be a tattoo, not marker.  Zeus has “302” tattooed in his ear.  And yeah, he came from a breeder (I didn’t buy him from the breeder, his previous owner did).

Our Rescue has tatooed Rabbits in the past for identification, i think we are doing it again.
This way if a rabbit is lost and then found they can be traced back to the owner/rescue group.
None of mine have ear tattoos but many in our shelter do.

I helped at a rescue as well that tattoed the ear with either an s for spayed or n for neutered and they year they were altered…I think your tattoo however is a breeder ID – I’ve had many rescued rabbits come to me with tattoos as well.

That’s very nice that the rescue marked altered bunnies! In that case, I could see this being helpful! Also I know we’ve had discussions about some vets tattooing a dot on the belly of spayed buns. Again, something that could definitely come in handy if getting a rescued rabbit.

ew I didn’t know it might be a tattoo! Poor bunny! I will email the breeder and ask her. I guess looking at the bright side if he gets lost there’s something that identifies him. He has like a dotted stamp in his right ear kind of like punctures. Louise said she had 300 wool and breeding rabbits. I figured the numbers were for the bunny show!

The problem with the tattoos is that it’s only an identifier to the breeder – most shelters or people aren’t going to know what the heck it means. That is alot of rabbits she has too.

Still it can help identify a particular bunny. I used to hate them but I have grown to like the tattoos on bunny ears. My Deirdra has one that healed away partly and scabbed off. It’s just gibberish now but very unique at the same time.

Yeah I know that’s a lot of bunnys! She takes care of them full time with her family… She must be doing something right lol Did I mention she was the one who developed the giant angora breed? Lol I saw some of her shaved bunnies. She mostly plucks them but shaves them sometimes. She taught me how to pluck a bunny lol it looked painful but she said they liked it when they were shedding. You could tell her house bunnies right away cause they would run to the front of the cages and try to get pets lol. I was like… “does that rabbit know you?” lol I didn’t realize half of them were hers. I almost got a retired flemish giant from her, and I was actually going to go pick up a super fluffy english angora, I think it was.  I actually picked out a bunny before franz, and when I was trying to go around the people to ask about him and put him on hold, this woman took him and I was so upset.  The woman was going to use him for a breeding rabbit. He woulda been happier with me I think. Franz made it all better though! He was next to the big wooly bunny I originally liked.

I licked my finger and rubbed the number in his ear (he let me lol) and it didn’t smudge, I think it’s a tattoo.
