in australia (or sydney anyway) it seems to be pretty hard to find timothy hay. pet stores only have a generic “pasture hay” (not sure if this is adequate?) and i have found timothy hay online but it’s pretty expensive ($18 for half a kg): http://www.oxbowaustralia.com/Catalogue%20March%202010%203%20pages.pdf

i have found oaten hay which seems much cheaper at $22 for an entire bale (23kg)

are they the same? will oaten hay do for my rabbits?

My rabbits eat bog standard generic hay. I’ve bought expensive timothy and things and they just don’t like it, but they chow down on the cheap stuff like it’s going out of fashion. I talked to my vet about it as I was worried it wasn’t good enough, but he said essentially, as long as your rabbit eats plenty of it, and it hasn’t been exposed to nasty chemicals or come with thorns in it (which pet food should not), hay is hay. Some are a bit better, but the important thing is to get plenty of it in them for fibre. So if you’re going to be worrying about the cost I would get the cheaper option and let them go to town!

            Hi aims

Oaten hay is the recommended hay for Aussie buns so that is fine. Timothy isn’t really available here. I’m not even sure if it can be grown here. Other then oaten you can try wheaten or barley hays, meadow hay which is a mix of grasses. But oaten is the way to go…it’s readily available, really good fibre and most bunnies love it. I’m surprised you’d have to pay $22 though. I can get a bale for half that. Try feed (fodder) stores or direct from a farm.

That might explain why I hadn’t heard of it!

really? i thought $22 seemed so cheap for a whole bale! don’t know what i’ll do with the entire bale though, it will probably go stale sitting there for so long! where do you get yours jersey girl? the stuff i’ve been getting from the pet store is $8 for a bag that’s probably 1-2kg!!

$22 isn’t that outrageous. It might be the going rate in Sydney. I’m in SA and a lot of hay is produced here so I guess that effects price. I usually get it thru fodder stores similiar to the one you linked above. They’re normally listed under Grain and Produce in the yellow pages. Anywhere that has horse quality hay is fine as rabbit hay.

If you know anyone else with rabbits or horses, you might be able to split a bale with them. Hay keeps a long time if stored propery. Trouble is, it can attract mice! Some of these feed stores will bag up their own hay but it still ends up being cheaper to buy a bale.

I second trying fodder shops, i buy a whole bale of oaten hay for $13.50 here in SA at the local fodder shop, wheras i have seen them in pet stores for a lot more. also if there are no fodder shops nearby it might be worth checking the gardening section at bunnings or somewhere similar? they might stock bales?
and as for storing, you can buy large plastic containers at cheap as chips or similar for around $15-20 that keeps the hay fresh and mice free for months!

oh and according to a farmer friend apparently ‘timothy’ hay is the american term for what we call ‘meadow’ hay so that may be why you have had trouble finding it
