Okay so PJ is old enough to start on veggies.

I was under the impression you fed them one type of veggie a week, and then keep adding. So this is basil week!

Here’s my next question. How do you get them to actually eat the veggie? I tried to leave the basil in his litter box with his hay, but he won’t touch it. I tried to feed it to him, but he literally turned his nose up at it!

        Any advice?

Leave it near where you put his pellets overnight. You may have to give it too them a few times before he tries it, be persistent and patient – he might take a while to cotton on Also, basil is quite strong smelling and my buns can take longer to try more pungent foods – this may just be them though. Perhaps start with something a little plainer? Good luck and happy nomming!

I would just move on to something else. I’ve given up trying to feed bunnies things they don’t want to eat! The only time Otto ever started eating new things was when we got Hannah – now he sees her eating new foods, so he decides to try them. If he was still a single rabbit, he would still be eating only lettuce. Some people have luck by feeding the same veggie every day for a few days, or being persistent with offering it by hand, but if you have a really stubborn bunny, like Otto, don’t feel bad if that doesn’t work – just move on to something else. He’ll be perfectly healthy even if he won’t eat a wide variety of veggies (Otto lived just fine on romaine and leaf lettuce for a long time)

Well it’s actually only day one, it just dawned on me how do you even get them to eat it?

I put it in his bowl, and I swear there is less of it than there was before. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking

He’ll eat it eventually, and if he doesn’t eat the basil, then he’ll eat another veggie. If it’s something he likes the smell of, he’ll know what to do with it 😉

Basil is an odd one to start with. Basic romaine lettuce is usually a favorite and is something that is tolerated by most buns. Maybe try that first.

Hah! He adores it! I can’t even get him this excited with raisins! I put the basil in his bowl of pellets and he wolfs it down. I feel oddly proud!
I have a basil plant, so that’s why I started with that. I also have a mint plant, I may do that next

Oh good! Glad he likes it. Even if he doesn’t seen excited about something at first, give it daily for an entire week (throw out the old and replace with fresh). Sometimes it might take a few days, but eventually they’ll nibble on it.
