Which is better for clipping a bunny’s nails or just keeping them still. Bunny burrito’s make them feel safe but don’t allow you to see (and clip) their back feet. Trancing may look like the rabbit is calm but being on their back actually scares them out of their wits! Which one do you think is best and why? What was your first nail trimming experience like?

It depends on the rabbit. Some rabbits trance very well, others do great in a burrito. You can make the burrito so that you can pull out a hind leg for nail clipping as you need it. The best way for regular nail trims is getting the rabbit used to them without trance or burrito if possible, just by winning the rabbit’s trust. This can take a long time but it keeps stress to a minimum for future nail trims. It all depends on your rabbit’s personality.
I don’t trance or burrito any of my rabbits for nail trimming and still it is a breeze now. It wasn’t always easy but by now they know the procedure and couldn’t care less. I just set them on my lap and lift up their chest with one hand, while giving them lots of kisses on their head between their ears, this relaxes mine, and then I just clip the front nails quickly. For the hind legs’ nail trim, I just kind of have them sitting on my lap with all fours down and just grab one foot and trim. This is what took them the longest to get used to, having me touch their back feet, but now they don’t mind. In the beginning you might only get a couple of nails done, but over time it gets easier. Some rabbits never allow you to do it and you might want an assistant, too.

All3 of mine do great trancing. None of them like the burritos. So, for mine, trancing is better.

I wish I could Baxters nails. They are in desperate need of it. He is so big now and his back legs are very strong. He kicks away and it hurts when he kicks me. My Vet charges $12 to clip them so I am going to do that. How do you trance them?

@Nibbles_NZ To trance a bunny you need to make them comfortable on your lap near the ground so that if they run away they don’t fall very far. Next you have to slowly flip them on their back but they don’t like it very much. Pet their noses/cheeks with your fingers to calm them down. They will go into a sort of trance so if you move them but keep them on their back. This makes clipping nails easier because they don’t move. To ‘wake’ them up, flip them the right way again.

                  lots of times actuallyy
thats ok im sure one of the leaders will delete the extra’s..

Hershey clips eas so i just hold her paws up one at a time, sometimes she’ll hold them up for me even, twixs i can do her front alright and sometimes her back but i normally trance her for her back paws… burritos i strongly disagree with. its too easy for them to slip out or freak.. i like trancing and just gaining trust.

LOL Baxter would NOT go for the trancing that’s for sure. Well, not for flipping him over. I used to do that to Bella and it worked but Baxter knows what the clippers are. lol He is too smart. I did actually trance him while he was doing a bunny pancake and I just grabbed his paw and started trimming away. He was okay with it until he saw the clippers. I let him sniff them and nudge them with his nose to approve of them before I tried it again. It may take a couple of tries to actually get all of them but it sure beats trying to pick his big butt up and get kicked. lol I agree that the burirtos could cause a little stress for a lot of bunnies but I have heard that they are better for some too.

Neither ways worked for mine. Lolli never goes into a trance and Eddie would fake it. Little poophead. lol My friend came over on Sunday and we had the best nail clipping session so far. I just held Lolli securely to me and my friend was able to clip her nails fast. Lolli only jerked one of her feet once. And no thumping afterwards. So apparently this is going to work the best for her.

So you might have to try different ways to find which works the best.

Side note and funny story about Eddie:  The only time I ever got him to trance was when my friend and her bun Lulla was staying with us.  Eddie and Lulla hated each other.  Well, this was one of the first times we introduced them so they were both out of their pens.  I grabbed Eddie when he was going to charge Lulla.  I don’t know why, but I put him on his back and he was so far in the trance I not only clipped but also FILED his nails.  I was actually seeing if the filing would snap him out of it.   i think he went so easily because by that time he had been running around and was all riled up for so long he was tuckered out.  I was never able to put him the trance before or after that.  When I would try after, he’d put his head back and close his eyes.  Then a few seconds later, his eyes would pop open and he’d start kicking to free himself.  I would lean over him so his feet would kick my stomach and chest so he wouldn’t hurt himself.  But it was funny.

Yeah, Peanut is way too smart to just be flipped over. We need to burrito him nice and tight.

I will do the trance method if I am in a hurry but I really prefer not to do that now. I actually do a similar method similar to what Petzy does. It still takes me longer than trancing to do it this way, (but it’s less stressful on the bunnies) however, am getting pretty quick at doing their nails while they are right side up and so pretty soon, I think I can give up trancing all together. (and give up on trancing my bunnies too. )

What I’m most worried about is what Nibbles_NZ said about their bunny, Baxter knowing what clippers are. I’ve heard that putting a towel over their eyes helps but I just don’t believe that would help a bunny get over the anxiety without facing their fears. You also have to do it while they are tranced (upsidedown) which defeats the whole purpose of trancing.

burritos don’t even work for me.

i just trance. it wasn’t too hard. i made sure to give bunny a treat afterward for her participation.

putting the towel over their eyes helps, from what i’ve been told.

Jackson will trance, Coco is a HUGE No Way to the trance, so she gets burrito’ed.

Coco also benefits from the towel over eyes during burrito. I only do this when doing nails or glands, so it is as infrequent as I can safely get away with it. Plus I get bunny butt for DAYS afterwards, even with treats.

Cotton doesn’t trance.  So I just wrap him and pet and coo to him for a while once I get him on his back.

                                  Ruby is easy.

Kari used to hang out this this all the time, it was her faverite way to be handled(and she LOVED being handled and picked up) it made it rediculously easy to do her nails and such. Jenny on the other hand doesnt do such things, I have to wrap her in a towel and even then its a major fight. Peepers I am working on teaching him to accept being flipped on his back for grooming and such so I dont have that issue with him..I was so spoiled with Kari that I am not used to handling a rabbit that puts up a fight, I dont like it! lol

Goodness! She sounds like she was very sweet. I’m having a hard time imagining it as Kari is same colouring as Jersey (who is not into being held ;o) )

Marley doesnt trance. Ive only had to cut her nails once and im actually doing it for a second time today!

I used the bunny burrito i was sooo amazed at how calm she was like that. when it came to her back feet i just held her sort of on her back and my boyfriend just opened the blanket enough to see the paw and then cut away! She of course didnt like it and it took a little while for her to get used to being like that but it all went very well, once she realized she couldnt get away!!
