Well, Hugo has made a lot of improvement since his vet visit on Monday.  He is down to 1 cup of pellets per day (not too happy about it though), he has increased his hay comsuption a lot.  He has not had any greens or fruit since then either.  I have noticed a big improvement with his messy bottom.  I do not have to clean his fur as much and do not have to clean my carpet 3 times a day and wash his towel every morning.

Here’s my questions.  The vet said if he was no tbetter by Monday she was going to give him a medication.  I’m not sure this is a step that should be taken.  Especially since we know it was caused by the diet change and an increse if fresh foods.  (Bad bunny mom)  I know some of you have trouble with poopy-butt with your buns.  Should I wait longer to see if there is more of an improvement?  How long is normal before his tummy is right again?  I can hear his tummy gumble from about 2 feet away instead of across the room.

I will take him to a vet that is recommended on the HRS page next time.  I don’t agree with some of what she had to say.  Like, bunnies should never get more than 1 cup of greens per day no matter how big they are and giving Hugo medication for his tummy.  The only reason he went there is because we were short on time and it was close to home.  The closest rabbit savvy vet is 30 miles away and my husband couldn’t get enough time off work.

Thanks again for all your help with Hugo.  I appreciate all of your thoughs, suggestions and opinions.

If you think he’s close to being 100% better, maybe just find a rabbit savvy vet you can call and talk to quickly on Monday and see what they have to say? I don’t think that one extra day without starting medication would be an issue if he’s eating normally and his poo production is normalizing.

I would just suggest to find a recommended vet, explain the situation, and see what they have to say.

I’d say he’s a least 50% better. Is medication something he would need for a diet change? It just doesn’t make sense. I will definitely be switching vets. I never thought about calling first! I’m pretty sure I can even email the one I’m looking at.

Absolutely second what Otti says – phone a rabbit savvy vet and ask, one day will be fine. Plus, like you I can’t see why a diet change would need meds..?

And you are not a bad bunny mom! You gave Hugo a good diet but did it a little fast for him –  but then you responded immediately to the problem. You are a good, caring bunny mom who does the best for her bun that she possibly can. Rant over

I doubt that a vet is going to diagnose anything over the phone if he/she has never seen Hugo.

It may take a little longer to get him normal. Do you know what the medication is?

She did not tell me. I might be able to find out tomorrow if I call. She put it in his chart so that I wouldn’t have to come back in if he still wasn’t better. If it’s just going to take a few weeks for him to get back to normal that’s fine. She just didn’t tell me. I just don’t want to give him a medication for something I caused if it’s not necessary. I’d rather wait and see if the no veggies help if I can. I just don’t want it to hurt him in the long run if I wait another week or two.

OK. I called the vet’s office that Hugo saw last week and they want to give him Metronidazole. I’m still confused as to why he would need meds.

OK. Called the rabbit-savvy vet. She recommended that I continue to see the other vet for this.
I called that vet. They said it was at my choice if I wanted the meds. I asked if it would be ok or do him harm to wait and she told me she didn’t know because she wasn’t a Dr and she wouldn’t go ask her. I seem to be having bad luck today with vets.
I guess I’ll just continue the diet without any fresh foods. He has made major improvements. So hopefully in the next week or two he’ll be back to normal. Sorry to bug you with all the questions and thanks for the help. I’ll keep you updated.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic. Unless she thought he had an infection then I’m like giardia or something like that I’m not entirely sure either. I would guess though she would have done a fecal and if she saw anything then she would treat with this.

                          Did she do a fecal?

Yes she did and she saw nothing.

Then it makes me think she may just be doing it as a precaution or just in case.

OK. Thank you. I’ll just give him some time then.

Ugh, that sounds so frustrating! Why would the rabbit-savvy vet tell you to keep working with the other un-rabbit-savvy vet? Could you call a local rescue or in some other way try to look up another rabbit-savvy vet in your area. Not sure how populated of an area you live in, but there might be more than one option.

The shelter is who recommended the one I am seeing. It’s who they use. The one I called is recommended on HRS and is 30 miles away. She said she is not a rabbit expert and to continue working with this one since she agreed with them from what I told them. I’ll just wait another week and see what happens. I know he is healthy, playing, eating, and drinking fine. I’ll just keep a close eye on him.

Hmmm so the rabbit-savvy vet actually is the one you’ve been working with. Well… I guess it’s a judgement call. If you feel that Hugo is eating basically normally and going to the bathroom normally, then give it 1 or 2 more days, but if he’s still rumbling then, definitely don’t give it a few weeks. From what I understand, digestive issues can quickly go from okay to serious in rabbits and they hide their discomfort well.

If his condition doesn’t get back to 100% rapidly, I’d suggest calling the vet you’ve been in contact with within the next few days, and insisting to either talk to the doctor or just making another appointment so you can bring Hugo in again.

Maybe people that have dealt with digestive issues in their own rabbits can give you better advice though.

Well, Hugo had to go in to the vet today for his feet. He has gained 4 oz. The vet said since he made such an improvement that he didn’t need the medicine. She also said that he would probably do best on a pellet and hay diet and not to give him greens and especially anything sugary.

Well, at least he will have his pellets so that will make him happy.

I’ve noticed the last 2 days that Hugo is having some soft stool again. He hasn’t had any problems with this in over a week and I haven’t changed anything in his diet. Could this be from the Baytril? Thanks for your help. =)

Yes, this could be from the baytril. Did you write Dana Krempels about his abscess problem?
