When I first got Captain, I rescued him from a carnival booth that had babies that were under 8 weeks old. They hadn’t been feeding older bunnies hay at all, and in fact, the guy told me point blank not to do so.

When I got to the petstore, nobody there knew about rabbits, so I kinda just googled things. I didn’t know what food to feed him, so I started him on Nutriphase, which is what he’s been eating since.

Has anybody used this petfood? I see a lot of people suggesting Oxbow, which is what I’m going to switch him to, I think…but I was just wondering if this food is bad for him or what-not?

He’s getting to the age where I need to be cutting down his pellets [he gets about a half cup a day now] and I’ve just now started him on unlimited hay because I didn’t realize he needed it.

@_@ I feel like a bad bunny parent, but I have no Idea if what I’m feeding him is alright or not.

Plenty of us here learnt on the run also. I got my 1st rabbit from a pet store and had limited knowledge on them. I’ve been learning ever since.

I just had a quick look at nutriphase online. It’s not terrible. You could have gone for a lot worse then that one. Better than the ones with all the fruits, seeds and colourful “veggie” bits.  It’s alfalfa based which is ok for young rabbits too. If you’re going to put him on oxbow, try get him on the adult pellets (timothy based). The packet tells you how to transistion onto the new feed.
Ideally you want a pellet that is grass based, protein no more than 16%, Fibre no less than 20% and fat under 3% (from memory). Also check for a low calcium content.

Yeah x.x I originally had him on the nutriphase with all the veggie bits and seeds and such because I figured ‘ohay, bunnies eat this! Veggies must be healthy!’ >< then I switched him to the nutriphase without it since it was cheaper at the time and i'd lost my job and had to convince domi to buy it. I found a sale on oxbow 10lbs for $15…should I have him on the 15/23 since it says its for under a year?

You could since captain is only 3-4 months. Is that right? Would make the switch easier too since it’s also an alfalfa pellet.

Be sure to mix in the Oxbow slowly by slowly if you plan to buy the bag!

It is hard at first to limit pellets. I wondered if my bunny was starving, but she has so much hay in her x-pen

My rabbit eats Oxbow Timmy Pellets for adult bunnies. She gets 1 tablespoon a day, and I’ve got a 5 lb bag that has so far lasted me 3 months. I’m about halfway done with the bag.

he threw a giant fit yesterday at dinnertime :[ I went to give him his pellets and he just kocked the bowl over, went and knocked his water bottle off, knocked the hay rack off, then pushed his igloo against the door and went inside and wouldn’t come out :[

Oh no :~( I would continue then with the Nutriphase – he needs to eat something. Since you’ve already bought the Oxbow just mix it in. Your better bet with the Oxbow though is the timothy pellets for the future.

oh no!…..ok, I have to admit….i did have a giggle on both accounts. Such subtle little creatures aren’t they?!

                        Congratulations on your teenage bunny!

I’d like to think it was an accident….but considering he later hopped over to my jacket and peed on it too…I think he’s throwing a tantrum :/ plus the yogurt treats he loves so much are apparently bad for him. So I stopped giving them to him. Any idea WHY they are bad? :/

Yogurt treats are bad because bunnies can’t digest dairy products. It’s unfortunate that they love them so much, but I’m sure you’ll find other healthier treats that he loves just as much! Dried fruits are a favorite in my house – I try to find unsweetened ones (papaya is a hit), but craisins also work.

What a big personality your bun has! I was laughing so hard at his antics. I guess he’ll let you know if he doesn’t like something you’re doing 😛 Hopefully if you mix in just a very small amount of the new pellets with a larger amount of his old pellets he’ll eat them, then you can gradually (over a month) work up to a full meal of the new pellets.
