My rabbits never go outside, so I was thinking about bring the outside in! If I was to get a roll of turf and grow it in a couple of grow bag trays do you think they would like it? They could nibble and dig one whilst the other was recovering out of reach. What do you reckon?

Interesting idea. I think the turf would need a minimum root depth of 6-8 inches to be sustainable. You might need a grow light, depending on location. Who know? – the buns might like to lounge in a simulated sun. And you’ll need to think about drainage. But I like the idea of having two trays so one could be fallow while the other’s in use. Good thinking!

I should get away without a grow light, my kitchen (where they would be) has a lot of light and I’ve managed to raise seedlings there before. This may require a bit more thought… but I can get really cheap turf through work so experimenting wouldn’t be the end of the world.

I am interested in how this will work out. I think it’s a great idea. Can you be sure that the turf is free of any pesticides though? That would be my only concern.

Any grass or seeds you got would have to be completely free from pesticides and fertilizer. I’m not sure if you could find that. For sod, I think they usually add all that stuff in to accelerate the growth. And most of the seeds I’ve seen have fertilizer built right in. It would be worth checking out, but I’m not sure it would work.

Also, keep in mind that this would be very messy, and the bunny would end up getting dirty.  Some people don’t care, but if you’d be upset if your bun is stained green and brown for a few months until they shed out, it might not be a good idea.

Due to the joys of organic grass seed, we have..

                  .

Only got pictures of Oxo so far, but Bisto’s had a nibble on the edges. I have two trays so I can swap them over – don’t think the buns will be able to play with it everyday though.

Just sprinkled the seed on compost and covered it with a thin layer of compost and kept it damp. It’s in my kitchen on top of the cage – luckily I get a lot of light there as it’s next to french doors. Got a thin layer of gravel in the base for drainage, but I’m just being careful not to over water it really.

Looks great. I was just thinking about this again. I imagine they’d love to lie down on the cool grass. I had seen an instruction guide for this sort of thing before but darned if I can find it. Oh well, this thread can now be the new guide!

I’ve put that I’ve used organic, but to be honest it doesn’t say organic on the packet – it just doesn’t have any chemicals listed in the ingredients. Other seed mixes did have, so I didn’t use them.

I can’t see what harm it will do – domestic lawn mixes will be made up of the same plants as the lawn you would put the bun on outside.

If it is unpronounceable, it’s chemical

Oh my gosh!!! I have actually been planning for a few weeks about doing this for my bunny!! She loves laying the grass, but i live in Oregon, so Theres so way shell go outside for about the next 9 months!!!

I want thinking about just expanding my wheat grass pots into a few trays and then letting her roll around in those. she absolutely loves the taste of wheat grass!!!

Its good to see that someone else thought of this too and that it actually works!

I stare at that little chunk of organic wheat grass every time I go to the grocery store. But then I realize how fast it will be inhaled. I really need to grow my own!!!

This is very cool! I love this idea. I wonder if paper seeded with grass seed would work?
