I’ve always been facinated with lions and recently started reading all the books by George Adamson and his wife. I was really excited to be reading about lions reintroduced and living in a pride in Africa from being store bought pets, and rescues.

I just finished reading about Christian, the lion that was bought in London and was so excited until about 75% through the book where some of the lions start dying and and George and his wife were killed by poachers/disgruntled workers …

I started crying thinking of poor Katania the lioness teenager being washed down the river and drowning,…and they never saw Christian again either.

Can someone help me out and direct me to some animal rehabilitation books that don’t involve tons of death? I was so excited to read this book but I don’t like the ending at all. It has left me feeling a bit empty tonight. Blah.

I want to read George Adamson’s autobiography but but right now I have “Born Free” to read from him and his wife when they released Elsa into the wild, a lioness. Not to mention I just bought “the stories rabbits tell, watership down, house rabbits guide or whatever it’s called, mmm…some behavior rabbit book…and some barn owl rehabilitation book too and we bought a a zoo. The zoo ones sad, its a memoir and the wife dies after they buy some run down zoo in london and all the animals have had poor vet care, idunno just what my mom told me so far …now im scared to read it!!!

How about Monty Roberts’ “The Man Who Listens to Horses”? Or the James Herriot autobiograpy, about an English veterinary surgeon? I haven’t read any of his books or the Monty Roberts book in ages but I used to LOVE them.

I don’t have any reccomendations, but I did see a program recently on Christian’s storey (the lion), and WOW, it was very interesting. They didn’t mention any of that other sad stuff, next to one other lion having to be killed after he was brutally attacked, nursed back to health and then killed a worker.

Yea, Boy had to be shot after he mauled the worker. In the book they said the worker would harass him and he was provoked by the worker. Still sad. But yea, Joy was murdered by one of her workers and George was murdered by poachers. Then they just never saw Christian again because he was having trouble establishing territory and the lionesses that were in “his” pride started mating with the wild lions near by and Christian was fighting with them too. I just wish they were able to know that he established a pride and made lots of little baby cubs but they don’t know for sure and it just isn’t what I wanted to hear. Sigh. It’s still a fantastic story, I guess I just wanted it all to be happy!

I think we’ve all grown up with a Disney mentality to this sort of thing…not to disparage your grief, Linz…I feel your pain. I always loved films where the animals win in the end, but they are truly few and far between. It sucks that in this world, animals are just something that some folks see as dollar signs and anyone who gets in the way of the profits is expendable. Plus a rehab animal is just not the same creature as one who is raised wild and kept that way. There was a Nature type show on our local public station about someone raising two cheetahs to release back to the wild and one of them doesn’t make it. It just tears you up.
Has anyone seen the evening BBC account of how cruelly the animals are being kept in Asian circuses? I could spit gold ingots I’m so angry! This stuff just gets me riled. >_<
I find the Herriot books wonderful, but they have their sad moments too. I think a favorite uncle gave me “All Things Bright & Beautiful” when I was wee and I’ve loved his works ever since. I wish they’d put the series back on PBS up here.

Even though it is a sad piece, I would like to read about Christian. I remember seeing a YouTube video about some of his story. So it’s written by the same person who wrote Born Free?

And yes, lions are beautiful. I think next to the bunnies, and in the last ten years or so the wolf, the cats and great cats have always been my favorites.

The same conservationist husband/wife released Elsa from Born Free as well as Christian. Although apparently Joy and George had a terrible marriage and Joy didn’t share any of her money that she got from Born Free to help with George’s other lion adventures, like Christians.

Okay I won’t say a word about it, its a nice book!

Yes Andi, George and Joy had a very bad marriage and she was murdered before he was so maybe that’s why she wasn’t mentioned?
