Sir Humps Alot came home last night and I got him set up in the travel cage which he was not overly impressed about.  he also was not impressed with my expensive hay or the oxbow pellets or any veggies instead wanted the cheap and nasty coles rabbit mix which he got a VERY small amount today as I want to make sure he is still eating.

So far he is using the litter tray however his back legs are so matted with pee and poo that i am thinking I am going to have to shave his bum!

Bugz and Anya came out and went up to the cage and where a bit put out, I mean there was this strange thumping rabbit in THEIR travel cage!  Hello!  So lots of treats where given and a small poo war from Bugz and everyone more or less settled.  Miss Kitty (the Cat) and the rabbits sort of ignore each other so she came to check him out and well that went down REALLY unwell!  Lots and lots of thumping and grunting and lunging.

Anyway will post pictures when I get a chance and also i think he needs a new name so any suggestions would be great.  Will try and post pictures tonight and also some of his butt so you can suggest what to do.

Oh and have to call the vet and get him de sexed!  I swear his has the largest set of balls that I have ever seen!

ETA – Rang the vet they want to see him today so have to duck out of work and take him there at 2.15pm and then they can fit him in on Wednesday to get desexed which is good as the sooner that happens the sooner I can start the bonding process.

Brittany – Sir Humps Alot is a rabbit that I found in a pet shop that was being kept there while the owners where away. Such a nice rabbit who was so friendly however covered in matts and I would go in a groom him. Found out that they wanted to get rid of him and put my hand up for him. They said I could have him and then it took AGES before they dropped him off for me.

Now you guys want the bad news? He has Molar Spurs and pretty bad ones at that, his whole tounge is a mess, he is having surgery on Wednesday and they hope that they can do the desexing then but it just depends on how bad his mouth is. he is under weight and has not been eating right. I have given him LARGE amounts of hay and will hopefully get him through his operation on Wednesday. It is going to cost me alot of money but what do you do? This is then going to be an on going process and the vet did say that he is going to cost me alot, she even suggested that maybe i would need to look at not keeping him or maybe that it might be better to put him down if I can take on the cost. I explained that I would find a way to pay, so out came the emergency credit card (that I had just finshed paying off) and off we go again. I am so mad that it is not funny, I have been going from crying to feeling like screaming. To think of the pain this little guy has been in, not to mention that the matts around his balls are so mad that they are all red raw and inflamed and sore! I so want to kick some arse! Not to mention that a simple visit to the vet and this would have been able to be fixed, yes it would keep coming back but then again she only feed him coles $*&!ing rabbit mix and apples no hay which is why the issue has come up in the first place! Oh so pissed off right about now!

Oh AV! Poor Bun. This is in his past now. There’s a way back from this. Tooth trim, diet change and regular grooming. I hope you won’t having to take him for ongoing tooth trims. How are his incisors?

Also, what’s this about 5 rabbits you rehomed? This was a rescue?

Oh gosh. I wonder if that amounts for his lack of grooming (other than parental neglect). He wasn’t able to take care of it himself due to the teeth problems… Let us know how it goes with him.

                              Thanks guys.

His front teeth are not alined in the correct manner either so his mouth is pretty much a mess all around but we will work with the vet and get him there.  His tounge is such a mess that we believe that he has matting issues from lack of him grooming himself  Last night he got into the grooming position but sort of nuged the area with his noise more then lick it so I think that grooming himself hurts which has made the issue worse.

However he did get a name, not sure why but I was talking to someone and I refered to him as Rufus, so Rufus it is!

At the moment we are having a bit of a poop war and he really really does not want to spend time in his cage which I can understand but the vet does not want him to active as his weight is so low so we need to beef him up.  Convinced him to eat half a carrot last night and the top which he thought was strange.  I did however find that he does not mind the Hay Cubes which is just compressed hay in small ping pong ball sized cubes The package says that each cube is half a rabbits daily required intake so giving him a bunch on them as they also state that it requires the same chewing action as normal hay.

Anyway some pictures for you all

Side Angle – Look at those ears!

My travel cage – Normally is on the floor with an xpen around it when we travel but as the moment it is Rufus’ prison, or he thinks so anyway!

Any my other guys so they don’t feel left out!  See how big Anya is now!  Also don’t mind the mess cage is due to be cleaned tonight and we are having a few poop wars at the moment

Oh he is completely precious! *snuggles*
Ugh…molar spurs! >_< Mimzy has to have his teeth trimmed pretty regularly now. But I'm hoping that the high fiber hay will help keep those down so he doesn't have to go back as often.

Sounds like the new bun was just completely neglected and hopefully now with the new ‘angel’ in his life who has rescued him, he will do better!

Rufus is a darling name! Fits him to a “T”!

Ok a quick update. Dropped him off at the vet and left him there, vet calls me says it looks good only three and they are not as bad as we thought so she will trim them and desex him. About 10 mins later I get a call, when she tried to trim them they started to crack and fall apart which makes her think that he has a mouth abcess. We are now doing a range of x-rays and going to work from there, she hopes that as it is unlikely that he has ever had antibiotics before that he should responsed well to them but he might have to be on them for long term and we will just keep taking steps forward. Again the vet said that this will be an expensive process and I said that is fine as the alternative is to put him to sleep and if there is a chance that I can fix him I am going to take it. Will know more later and will keep you updated.

Oh the poor baby! *more snuggles* This is much like what happened with Jenna’s teeth (my new yorkie) as the minute they put the mask on her for her dental, one of her front teeth just fell out! The others crumbled away to dust as they tried to remove them. She’s no more than 3 years old as far as we know.
Has to be a nutrition issue, I would think. Poor little guy!

Do you have any idea of Rufus’ age, btw?

Ok the update is. He has a massive mouth abcess that is involving 4 bottom molars on the left hand side, however the abcess does not seem to be bothering him pain wise the molar spurs seem to be what have stopped him eating. We believe that he is around 5 years of age and the vet said that this abcess has been there for a while so after much talk we decided to manage the situation rather then attempt to fix. The vet feels that to fix she would have to remove all 4 teeth on that side which would come with it’s one set of issue and also a very long operation and even then there is no garantee that we will remove it all or that it will not come back. Afer muh back and forth it was decided that we would put him on long term antibiotics and weekly, then 3 monthly then 6 monthly check ups and hope that we can give him a good quality of life for the next few years. She did warn me that the time would come that I would have to put him down but that is not today. He came home last night and ate everything in sight, i would say his teeth as still a little sore but he is eating lots of green leafy veggies so I will keep them up to him. He is not sure about the hay as I don’t think he was every given any so that is going to be a long process and also getting him to believe that it does not hurt when he chews.

Also he did not get desexed and next week the vet and I are going to discuss our options. I think that she might be wanting to tell me not to bother as he is not agressive and does not spray but that means no bond with my guys so two seperate cages which I was trying to aviod but hey if that is what I have to do that is what I have to do.

Thank again for all the support and well wishes.

Oh AV, I’m sorry to hear that the prognosis is so complicated! I was really hoping for something easy.
But hey, he’s going to have a wonderful life with you, so who knows? He will no doubt do much better now than where he was!

Thanks. At the end of the day it is not that bad. As my vet says he is 5 years old so that is not bad for a negelected rabbit if I can give him 2 or 3 years of love and care and fun then that is what I will do and really one injection a week will not be that hard to manage

Ok thought I would update here instead of starting another thread. I got my lessons in how to inject Rufus, my vet says he is fantastic just sits there and takes it and asks for another pat on the head. he had an allergic reaction to his vaccination but no reaction to his weekly meds shot. He did however have a fungual infection on the underside of his mouth. My vet was very worried that this was caused from his drolling due to his teeth but I told her how he liked to blow bubbles in his water so we switched to a bottle which he is NOT happy about and took him a bit to understand how to use but now is going well and the dampess under his chin is 100% gone.

We got clearance to get him altered and he is booking in for the 28th of this month. Going to be a few big days for me as Miss Kitty is also getting done on the 29th of this month… yes my credit card will get another work out!

At the moment we are having spraying issues with him peeing all over his cage and me and the wall and the cat (that was fun!) this in turn is causing Anya and Bugz to forget that they are in fact litter traning and spray all over their cage so cleaning is a nighmare. But Rufus did eat a carrot which means his teeth are starting to feel better as this is the first time he has eaten one since I got him!

Part of his blowing in the water etc may have been to relieve some dental pain. It’s so good he is getting some treatment for that now. Despite his various ailments it appears he’s a sweet rabbit. He could be forgiven for being more cranky due to those, but he sounds like a soldier. Hope his true personality is shining soon. Give him some head pats from me.
