So I heard that buns like to play with balls to move them around and stuff and I’m wondering if I could use a coconut for this. If Oreo accidently ate a piece would that be alright and would the coconut do any minor or major harm at all.

I’m not sure about how safe/unsafe coconut is for bunnies but… coconuts are messy! You’d have those strings all over the place (which he would most definitely take a nibble of) and if he actually managed to chew through the shell you’d have a big mess of coconut milk all over the place. And if he got it open while you were gone, he’d gorge himself on the coconut, and that would be way too much sugar for him. So.. if you do let him play with a coconut, just do it under supervision only. Also, how big is he? Would a coconut be too big/heavy for him to move around?

Maybe you can find him some other wooden balls and toys from the binky bunny store?

Interesting idea. It would have to be an organic coconut because regular ones are heavily treated with chemicals for their transport and storage etc. I will see if I can find out if coconut shells are OK for rabbits. I bought a mat for mine once from all-natural untreated coconut coir and it was a big hit. On this note, rabbits should eat no nuts, including the meat of a cononut.

I found this mention of coconut shells in The Rabbit Handbook. Again, no actual coconut meat for rabbits, and I would go with organic to avoid any chemicals. I might try out a piece of coconut shell on my rabbits, see if they like playing with it.

Coconuts aren’t actually nuts, they’re seeds. Still, the white meat is not good for rabbits since it’s so high in fat and sugar — here’s some comparative info from http://nutritiondata.self.com:

                1 ounce coconut meat, raw — 9g fat, 2g sugar, 1g protein, 3g fiber
                1 ounce carrot, raw — 0g fat, 1g sugar, 0g protein, 1g fiber
                1 ounce dill weed, raw — 0g fat, 0g sugar, 1g protein, 1g fiber

Edit: It just occured to me, Wikipedia says coconuts are drupes (kind of different from other drupes, though, because in this case the flesh is not fruit but rather the fibrous hull, and what we eat is the seed inside). I thought that all plant parts (except fruit) from drupe trees is poinsous for rabbits. So does this affect the safety of coconut hulls/shells/husks for rabbits?
