Ok, I have ‘only’ 14 pets, this is the least amount of pets I have had in close to 6 years or so.  I don’t really want anymore, as I am hoping to start 2 two legged family in the near future.  but ….

I have kept dwarf hamsters until last year when i lost my Ambassador  Hamster Happy Gilmore to old age. I’ve missed him and his brothers since and have looked for ones in need of a home on PetFinder and such for months.
Well an SPCA on Vancouver Island has a little guy, and my rescue friends were filling my email box with his ad. Honestly the picture really looked like a gerbil, so we asked a lady who works there to recheck it for us, and he is a dwarf (so I’m told) and next week there is a lady doing a trip to the island and back…. bringing me a new little Hammy man

        I’m so nervous and excited!

        I”M GONNA HAVE A HAMMY AGAIN! lol….

I convinced the other half to let me have one with “I ONLY have 14, and my gerbil is super old, this is probably his last year, and Bruce (my Degu) is so old too, hamsters don’t live very long either. “

This was my Happy Gilmore  He taught so many children and their parents about hamsters and their life long commitment when i spoke at different events. He would sit in the crook of my arm, grooming himself or sleeping LOL. He was bonded to me and groomed me whenever i put my hand in the cage, a sure gem he was   It will be nice to share our home with another of his kind … i just pray this ones just as nice as my others LOL

        Happy Gilmore

Ooo how exciting! Happy Gilmore is adorable! I had hamsters in the past and they never bonded with me like that…

What a sweet guy he was! I love hammies, especially dwarves. I had them as pets as a child/teenager and I enjoyed them so much!

I gave the volunteer who will be picking him up a carrier, and i will meet her on the 9th to pick him up. I’m stoked! I’ve been telling everyone and teh looks I get LOL

14 pets is a lot. What are they all? What is your setup?

14 pets is a lot. What are they all? What is your setup?

14, is nothing compaired to what i used to keep. This is the one side of what was my “Rodent Room” where i kept my own and rescued/foster gerbils, as well as a few hamsters and my Degus. Where I am standing to take the picture there are about 3 or 4 more cages I think at that time.

I kept max probably 30ish here at some point (Not including Rabbits, at one time I had 14, 11 to 8 was the normal though for buns). This room now has nothing it it, all those animals have lived out their lives with me and passed on or been adopted. There is 1 gerbil, and 5 degus left.

This is the current setup for the 4 degus and One gerbil, it is in my Rabbit basement area.

The 4 Degus are kept in the cage I desgined and made for them (Big Blue thing) and the gerbil in a 15g aquarium on the shelf, the hammy will be kept here as well. My 7 rabbits live in here, on the other side of the NIC fencing you see, that opens to their free play area.
My Dog get’s the run of our house, and sometimes so does Bruce, my ancient Degu LOL, his cage is upstairs untill the weather get’s to warm, then i will move him down.

It may look neat to have so many, but i had to give up a lot of other things to care for these guys, and keep them fed and healthy. I don’t regret it or anything, but i won’t have this many again it’s just to much work, and now having only 1 gerbil (BTW they should b kept in pairs, his partners died he’s old) has showen me just how I can spoil him so much now that there aren’t 30+ mouth to feed.

Oh so cute, I want one but we are not allowed them here in Australia and tell your Hubby that 14 is not many, I have 16 permit residence in my house (not including me) and up to 10 rescues at any one time!

Thanks Andi for posting these photos. Everything looks very clean — how long did it take you each day to maintain everyone? I think it is important for people to see how much space you had to make for the pets and what a serious commitment they are. I do applaud you though to have established a limit for yourself in light of the fact you are thinking of having kids. I have two dogs and a quartet of bonded rabbits, this is the maximum I can handle and I work from home.

Gerbils are great for not being real stinky, so they go through less bedding/cleanings as the hamsters/degus/rabbits do, so that helps a bit. I would do say 5 tanks at a time, and date them so I knew which ones were cleaned when. The one thing I didn’t like at all was the dust, they produced so much dust from all the cardboard chewing etc.  I’m allergic and so wore a mask when i cleaned & used the dustbuster and stuff in there. I used corncob bedding b/c it wasn’t very dusty.
Maintaining was a good 20-30 mins or more just to feed and water and look every cage over, depending on how many were in a cage, some needed to be fed more often then others. I would put the dishes up on something so it wouldn’t be buried, this let me see just how much food they were eating, i would not fill it unless most of it was gone, otherwise they’d just eat the ‘junk food’ and not the health food LOL If I was cleaning tanks then that took a lot longer, so that’s why i would do a few at a time.

So I took a pic tonight of my bunny set up, don’t mind the pee stains LOL… *sigh*

This is my trio in the left cage, and Suzy & Spencer in the right. outside of everyones cage is the free-run play area. My Trio will be moving to Ani’s old cage, i have a bunch of stuff to fix/clean/build b4 they move in. (that ‘pen’ in next photo). Suzy & Spencers is much taller b/c Suzy will jump out of anything, her last cage had a roof, she is an escape artist.

These are my 4×6 pens, with NIC condos. The first houses Baby & Bubba, and the second was Bo & Ani’s, it’s in the middle of being renovated. My hay box is in the left corner there, the digging box is the cat litter box, on top is grooming supplies, there is a hutch on the right and that is a toy, as they play in it there’s a ramp to get in.  And well drawers of medical supplies, treats, blankets, other grooming stuff, etc.

There are two windows, i close the pretend curtins in the summer to keep it cooler. There are some other toys in front of the hay box, oh and i stacked stuff on top of the hutch to stop Suzy from jumping up there and chewing it LOL

So the PetFinder ad said “Male, Teddy bear Hamster Cross” … the picture looked like a gerbil (bad pic), and the lady who was transporting the hamster to me said she thinks it’s a mouse. So i had no clue what to expect when I picked up my new hamster yesterday…
How about the most beautiful FEAMLE dwarf hamster I have ever seen   Her colouring is white on top, a cinnamon agouti on bottom with a white stripe on her belly, and little black eyes. She is VERY friendly, not timid and LOVES the wheel.

My niece was born yesterday, I went to the hospital to meet her before I picked up the Hammy. When I called my Mother about the hamster that was suposed to be male, she said Name her Isabella, after my niece. So Isabella (Izzy) it is

I got a call from the other half this morning (we work opposite shifts, so phone comminication is our thing), he said “Wow she really is a cute little hamster, and loves her wheel”, and how the wheel started squeeking so he went to the kitchen and got a little vegtable oil to grease it, as soon as he did Izzy had to check it out, licked the oil and freaked out running around her cage trying to clean it off her face LOL, poor girl. (My last hamster used to lick it all off like it was a yummy treat). I think Izzy is a little diva hamster.

As of today, I have officially adopted her

I took a couple pic’s with my phone, they are crappy, but hopefully u can see the line in her 2-tone colouring.

So i went from who knows what kind of hamster (or mouse? lol) i was going to come home with, to the sweetest, cutest tiny hammy ever I’m really happy I was conviced to take her in.

Eeee! Such an adorable little face!

I’ve never had a hammie, but I’ve had over a dozen gerbils, so I understand your love of pocket pets 🙂

Seeing your adorable dwarf hamsters and your setup has rekindled an interest in having a hamster. Is that Carefresh bedding in the pic of your hammy at the wheel or what is it? How often do you dump all the litter out and replace? I’m so happy for you – a wish you and your pets a long and happy union~

                                  Thanks

I have one gerbil left from my many, i love gerbils and have had them for years, but in the last 4 years though i have really fallen for the dwarf hammies LOL. My gerbils name is Civic, he’s a burmese.

Yes, i am useing carefresh right now. I think it’s a bit lumpy for her though, since she’s tiny. I am going to see if i can get a small bag of 1/8 corn cob bedding to mix in with it. I’ve not had a hamster for some time, so I am not sure how often the clean will be, I guess it’ll depend on her bathroom habits, if she chooses one spot to go in i can clean that every couple days, but I am guessing every week maybe longer, dwarfies are like gerbils they don’t pee a lot and so don’t really smell.

my co-worker wants me to bring her into work LOL.
I have probably over a dozen cages/tanks to keep small animals and I was talking about finding her a pink cage LOL, like I need anymore, I’m trying to sell all the ones i have :p

I love burmese! It’s my favorite gerbil color. Funny that my last two burmese have been spitfires and not very friendly, while my last two silver nutmegs were the best gerbils I’ve ever known. Guess I should get more silver nutmegs and no more burmese 😉
