Scooter here.  Well, we’ve been forced to put a padlock on the trio’s bunny cage!  As you may recall, Aeryn has proved quite adept at breaking out of jail, from climbing above the cage to using a block of wood chew toy as a battering ram to force the lowest door of their NIC condo open.  Now she’s figured out how to rattle the bars and snap the binder clips holding the door closed.  The other night, she opened the door three times in succession, all in less than a minute.  The next morning, she was in her cage, but the cage door was wide open, so we figured she explored all night and then went back in to pretend that nothing had happened.

The photo below shows one of the three binder clips on the lowest NIC door and the padlock.  Her cagemate Bailey is in the background.

We figure it’s only a matter of time before Aeryn learns either to turn the key in the padlock, or to pick the lock itself….

She is so smart.  Too bad she’s devoted her little bunny life to total bunny evil…

haha! I was going to mention not leaving the key. What a clever girl though! Next she’ll find a strong peice of hay to pick the lock with.

Haha, crafty little bugger! You should go to the hardware store and pick up a snap hook or two. She wouldn’t be able to break out and they won’t be so much of a hassle to remove if you need to do it quickly or there is an emergency or something.

When Frankie used to be in a NIC cage, I secured his door with a double-sided one. He is very clever, but it always held him!

That is a great idea! Lol I think I may have a way to keep my escape artist in. Clever bunnies and their dirty tricks!

Aeryn is proving to be a very smart, evil little bunny.

She’s already figured out that the padlock is what’s responsible for her not being able to open the cage. And she’s figured out how to move it and turn it so that the lock part is inside the cage. We’ve been keeping the key in the lock, and we’ll keep it there for now because frankly we’re curious to see how long it takes her to figure out how to get the lock open and off! The padlock isn’t such a big deal for us being able to get into the cage – the condo is 4 NIC grids tall and the door goes all the way up, but we’ve made it so that each level can be opened independently. It’s just the bottom door that Aeryn has been breaking out of, so that’s the only one that’s padlocked.

And to think that some people think that bunnies are quiet, docile little animals that just sit in their cages waiting to be snuggled. Yeah, right!
