The semester is over and I have time for BB now!! YAY! Everyone is doing good. Hammer is turning into a bit of a stinker, he is spending to much time with Lucy lol. Lucy is getting more tolerant of my petting though, so Im pretty happy about that. Mae is going fantastic now too, she practically never has her little freak outs any more. Maybe about two months ago she scared me so so bad though. I was going through the process of putting her in her carrier so I could clean cages like normal, and for some reason she got way to scared. She actually put herself in a trance. It was so scary, she didnt move or react at all to anything. She went limb when I picked her up! So I held her for 20 or 30 minutes and was printing directions to the emergency vet when she started coming out of it. She was fine once she came out of it, but gosh I was so upset. But she is almost like a normal bun now, so she is making serious progress.
About a month ago my bank account started dwindling, and since I pay for the buns and had to dip into their vet funds for their food i got a job. So now I work part time at a day care, which is awesome because my major is education. Ill go into early or elementary education so this is a good job to keep the buns on Oxbow and in the safe zone for zet funds, and gain experience too. But they have a bunny in the after school room . It took awhile to finally meet the lead teacher in that room but I finally did a week or so ago. I asked about the bunny and she absolutely hates it! She didnt want it in the first place and still doesnt want it, but the day care wont let her get rid of it until we have our checkups from the state. Apparently they think a bunny would look nice for the state. But she doesnt know if its a boy or girl, how old it is, doesnt even have a name. They even leave it on the weekends. She said she didnt know what she’d do with it after state comes, give it to one of the kids, set it free, whatever. So I offered and its mine after state comes. Its so cute! I visit it on my breaks and it seems really laid back, but that could change when it gets a proper home.
Heres a picture! Im thinking holland lop but idk
And to be fair of course
Hammer outside for the first time. He wasnt a fan other then the grass
Lucy outside too. She was not real pleased, but she looked cute
And Mae, really wanting some nose rubs
That definitely looks like a Holland Lop! Soo cute! What a lucky bun to find such a great home and not have to spend all his time in a cage
Poor baby… so sad that they just keep it to make the inspector guys happy, and then go to dump it after. Should tell on them lol. Glad he’ll have a good home now though
As long as they don’t back out or something :/ The poor thing has a little bit of a dirty bum too, nothing major but I almost want to secretly hope for illness to hit. Id catch it because I visit it everyday and Id be able to sweep it out of there asap. Take it to the vet and then take the poor thing home!
I’ve been thinking a lot lately I’m way too animal rights to work in the daycare I work at. They have 4 guinea pigs, 5 turtles, and now 4 chicks (I guess for only a few weeks), and normally 2 hairless rats (they just died, and they haven’t “replaced” them yet). None of the housing is great…mostly all just small starter cages from Petco.
I would DIE if they ever brought in a bunny. I’ve just “adopted” the responsibility of all the animals, cleaning them and such since they would only get cleaned about every 2 weeks if I didn’t do it.
I’m glad you’re taking in that adorable bun to give him/her a great home.
Yea when the director told me they had a bunny in the after school room I guess my face didnt look so good because she asked me what was wrong lol. Id gladly bring it salad and hay and better bedding if I could, but I come directly from school so I cant bring veggies with me and I cant leave anything in the fridge. I think Im going to start bringing it a ziplock bag of hay when I can if they will let me. But they like there pine bedding so they wont change that either. I thought about taking it home on the weekends but I dont think i could make it a good cage and a nice house rabbit routine and then take it back to junk every week.
Maybe if you just brought in some info about how it would be better off with the improvements you suggested (and if you wanted to bring the stuff in) they might let you take better care of it…until you can bring it home. Ha
How are the kids with it? Some of our younger kids get pretty loud with the guinea pigs so I’m always telling them to not scream at it or stick their fingers in the cages.
what are you going to name it?
I don’t think these people really care enough, and I don’t think they’d take me seriously either. I’m the youngest one working there, Im 19, so I know they wont consider there is more to a bunny then a cute face and pine bedding. Its hard enough to convince people that actually care about their bunny that they need hay and good bedding and salad and play time etc etc. But the kids are pretty good with it. They are only there for less then an hour in the morning and maybe two hours in the afternoon, because they are the school age kids. So they are pretty calm kids and don’t bother it to much. The rest of the age groups just have fish tanks.
I don’t have any name ideas yet, Im not very creative with names.
That’s good. I’m 19 as well and have gotten many remarks from the older women working there about how they’re ‘just’ animals. The owner doesn’t care if they die cause they can “always be replaced.” Even about her own 3 dogs (I babysit for her). I couldn’t ever imagine even saying something like that. Is the daycare you work at also an elementary school?
No, they just have a before and after school program. Its really convenient for the parents that have their younger kids there so they only have to make one stop.
Oh I hope it’s a girl…then Fortunata would be a good name because she is lucky you are going to take her out of that horrible situation! ^_^
Good to see you again, Liz. I was about to make a post asking how you were doing. Good luck with the loppy, I hope you get to keep it!
Hi Liz *waves* Nice to see you back around!
When I first saw the picture of your potential new bunny , my immediate thought was “Oh! Mae is going to love him!” haha. I don’t even know if it is a him. Would you consider bonding a newbie with Mae?
Keep us posted on what happens with this one. I just hope the place you are working doesn’t go get another one after some time has passed.
If its a boy or if its a girl, it will be Mae’s friend. He/she seems really laid back, so I think they would get along and have that understanding. Plus he will probably be a scared bun too, not as bad as Mae but they seem like they would be a good pair. Of course Im not expecting an instant bond, but neither have to much spunk so it should be possible. It would be a good idea to bond them too because I have limited space. Right now the set up is Hammer and Lucy have a 3×7 and Mae has a 3×4 pen. But Hammer and Lucy will downsize to 3×4, Mae to 3×4, Newbie to 3×3. Thats all I have room for so if they bond Id be happier with the pen sizes too.
Oh bunny noses so cute!
Welcome back Liz!
Ugh. I don’t have to tell you that this story makes me incredibly mad. Do you really like your job… b/c if I were you, I’d be reporting them to someone… or taking the bun home every weekend and *accidentally* forget to bring it back for the state visit. Can you make an appt. to talk to this state person and see if it is in fact a “requirement” to have a rabbit? Because what happens NEXT YEAR?! They get another bun, and you can’t possibly take them ALL?!
I’m pretty sure it isn’t a requirement for these inspector people, they are just thinking that it would look good and since they already have it they should keep it till then. There isn’t anyone to report them too, they aren’t doing anything that most of the population would consider bad. And they would definitely know it was me, the only newbie that has taken a strange interest in the rabbit lol. Every Friday I have a little chat with him and make him promise that he’ll see me on Monday in good health, but its so hard to leave him.
Fair enough. Do you think you can at least try and give them info AFTER you safely get him out of there? I’m just concerned about him being replaced by another bun (or anything else alive.)
Perhpas you should name him/her Felix (Latin for Lucky). Sorry I’m a Latin teacher….ahahaha
I like the name Felix, but it would remind me of twilight too much lol.
I will definitely tell the director a little about bunnies when I talk to her. I think I’m going to bring him home on weekends, he could use a butt bath and nail trim, it would just be so much easier to help him along at home. Plus the director may just say oh well forget it just take him permanently now. I spent my lunch break in his room today and their weren’t any kids in there then so I let him hop around for the full hour and I LOVE HIM! He binkied, flopped, zoomed omg he is so cute. Surprising enough he doesn’t run from me when I approach him, or avoid pets. He nose bumped me a million times, and Im in bunny love. So Ill chat when the director and I are on the same schedule, probably Thursday.
lol…He already sees you as a person who is in tune with the plights of bunnies. You’ve already reached him on an unspoken level.
Felix = Twilight? Uh, you mean the novel? Refresh my memory, please? I don’t remember a Felix in Twilight? *confused*
I think Felix was one of the Volturi vampires, if I remember right. Nasty guys they are.
Lol Mimz. I know I love that he already trust me so much. Pretty impressive for a bun in a day care.
And yes, Felix is a volturi vampire. I might, kinda, possibly be a huge twilight fan…. okay so I am, but it would be a bit far to name a bunny after it. Even though Lucy won her name because I absolutely love I Love Lucy lol
Snapped a few pictures
Look at how relaxed he is, feet out!
You guys couldn’t resist that face either, its just begging for a good home.
hehe I’ve read the Twilight books numerous times… not enough of a fan to name bunnies after vamps tho
And yes, your loppy buddy there is ordering you to take him by the looks of the 2nd pic. “You there. I require a pedicure and a spa session, immediately.”
lmao…Nice call on the bunny disapproval, MB! ^_^
So glad that you got a job there, so you can rescue the little fella. He looks so gorgeous. It is kismet – it was meant for you to find him
Here, it is quite common for schools as well to have small animals in some of the classes. It supposedly “brings the children together” to care for a pet. In my class at school, we had birds and fishes…of course, no one ever bothered to clean or feed after the first two weeks. I think my best friend got the birds once the teacher got sick of the cleaning. Rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs are also quite common. And of course, there is never ever someone who wants to care for the pets when school is closed for the holidays. So irresponsible!
I wonder if that dewlap is an indication he is a she, or if it’s just because that bun is a chunky butt!
Sorry about the whole TWILIGHT thing with Felix. I have never read or watched the books or movies. After I heard that the vampires don’t have fangs I have refused. If it is a girl you could also call her FORTUNA….that’s also Latin for luck/fortune. Again, Latin teacher here…hahaha!
HatterBunny- Oh not a problem, I actually like the name, id just think of the vampire every time lol. I actually want a foreign name that means something, so your latin suggestions would be awesome. I want something that sounds pretty though. How do you say Fortuna? I was horrible at Spanish because I couldn’t say any of it lol. Is it just For plus Tuna as in the fish?
Beka- I thought the same thing when I was uploading the pictures, kind of a big dewlap for a boy! Still crossing my fingers for a boy though. It would be easier on Hammer and Lucys relationship and easier to bond with Mae.
I asked the director today if I could take him home on weekends and bring him back on Monday mornings and she said sure! Woot woot! Itll be hard to get attached over the weekends and then turn it off on weekdays and give him back, but I think it will be good for him. Ill be able to clip his nails and groom him, give him lots of love and play time. I brought him a handful of hay today and the director was okay with that too, so ill keep him stocked on hay will he is there. He immediately started eating the hay like crazy, so yea he likes hay already haha. Im worried about where Im going to put him though. I have a 2x2x3 NIC cage that he will be in. 2×2 base with 3 cubes high, so three levels. Not very big but he will only be here on weekends so I think that is decent sized. So I can put that cage in the dining room downstairs and carry him back and forth to my room for play time. Or put it in my room with the rest of them. Im okay with either, I could just move the cage to and from my room every week because it would almost block my dresser. Or carrying him is okay too. I just don’t know whats best for Hammer and Lucy, they will most likely have relationship issues over this. But would it be better to have him live in my room 2 days of the week, or visit my room two days a week?! They might get used to him if he lives next to them vs visiting they might not ever get used to it. But idk and I cant make up my mind, so input please.
Is there anywhere else in the house you can set him up?
Yes I can set him up in the dinning room, but he cant play down there. The only place I can let him play is my room. So Im trying to figure out if it would be less stressful on Hammer and Lucy to have him visit my room for play time, where they probably wont get used to him. Or have his cage in my room where Hammer and Lucy might be able to get used to him.
BunnyLiz – That Latin I teach is not Spanish “latin.” I teach ancient Latin….what the Roman used to speak! Anyway, YES, that is how you pronounce it….exactly like it looks. FOR and TUNA (like the fish)….
But if he is in fact a boy, I guess you could call him Fortunus, if that’s better.
I like the name Victor (from the latin word victus meaning the conquerer or the winner of a fight or a struggle…you know, the struggle of being a school bunny )
Karla – you’re absolutely right!! Victor (unconquered) or Victoria….same thing only the feminine version! Just don’t call him/her Claudius/Claudia because it translates to “the lame one.”
Hatter- I knew you meant Latin, as in not Spanish. I just meant that I suck really really bad at pronouncing anything, Spanish was horrible and its suppose to be the easiest! Even English is hard sometimes lol But really, phonics was NOT my thing.
Karla- Im liking Victor/Victoria! Its a possibility.
I might not get him today. I requested off because I had an exam and told them I couldn’t work all day, so it would be weird to go in and pick him up. The girls are so catty, and Im the newbie who is freakishly concerned about the rabbit, so I might just let it go till next weekend.
ok, everybody who took 5 years of Latin in high school raise their hands! (raises both hands….lol) I loved my Latin teacher, she was a short, heavyset lady and some days she’d come to class in a sheet and honeysuckle crown and flipflops. She taught us history, everyday life, cooking, we had cardboard Roman money to do business with.
My husband was into it too, we found out we both still had our UL medals….lol. Now I have to find my books!
I loved Latin as well, but only had it for a year.
Bunnyliz, perhaps you could go in later when there aren’t that many people left in the building? Otherwise, if you know you won’t feel bad about it, then let it be. He doesn’t know what he is missing out on and hopefully soon you will be able to bring him home for good. I have to admit, I would feel akward about going in as well, but I also know that I would feel bad all weekend, so I would have to do it eventually and eat my pride.
Kralspace – LOL!! Well, I personally happen to be PETITE (5’1″) but I surf all the time so luckily I’m a skinny PETITE (not short…hahaha) Latin teacher!!
Petite people unite!!!! Im 4′ 11″, 90 ish lbs lol. Ive always been teeny tiny, doctor wanted to use growth hormones when I was little hehe.
I think I’m going to go get him! My exam (if it hadnt been canceled) would be over at 5:10, they close at 6 so thats why I took off. But if I get there at 5:30 itll be good timing because they will think I just came from my exam. And ill take my summer class schedule and say I just got it today and wanted to drop it off so they could work out my schedule sooner rather then later. So Ill have an excuse to be there and hopefully wont be as awkward. But I just know I wont be able to escape without catching 20 kids attention and them asking a billion questions. So I have 2 hours to fix up his cage and bun proof him a play zone, ready set zoom!
Hope everything works out…and BONA FORTUNA – GOOD LUCK!
Just an update! My internet was out forever, but I think I finally have all the tiny annoying problems worked out. A million things went wrong. The internet cord that goes to the router was chewed up the day that Felix came home, so my mom tried to blame him, or me for not bun proofing good enough. But I knew he couldnt get the cord, so I had to compare the bite marks on the cord and other bunny bitten things to prove it wasn’t him. The kitten did it. And then a million problems continued, but its working for now. Anyways, Felix is coming home with me on the weekends and I have him switched over to oxbow T pellets. I feed him everyday at the daycare, but its a pain that I have to pay for his too expensive pellets and hay when he isnt even mine yet! But oh well, he will be mine and ill have to take full financial responsibility soon anyway. He was the sweetest thing EVER for the first week, he loved to be cuddled and he followed me none stop to the point that it was almost annoying. And now he is the bunny from hell lol. He is really really cage protective now and spoiled rotten. He started with just grunts and then lunges and he bit me today. Not bad, no mark but I felt teeth. Its was kinda funny at first, Id just laugh and wag my finger at him and he would let me pet him. But now my mom wont try to pet him or refill his hay or anything, and im the bunny wrangler who fights with him to clean out his water bowl lol. I know its not his fault so im not worried about it, he will be better when he is neutered and stable. Im sure carting him around and switching his homes on him has a lot to do with it, so it will probably stop when he is mine full time.
Hi, BunnyLiz! I was thinking about you, wondering where you had gone! Bless your heart for taking in that little cutie!
