So the last week or so has been lots of fun for me, foot-wise. My ‘proud flesh’ that was supposed to be excavated from the side of my big toe two weeks ago does not seem to have been removed if the skin growing back there is any indication. It looks no different than it did before…if anything it looks worse. Much worse.
The day we went to get Jenna, I had an appointment with this doc for a recheck. My foot hurts all the way from the top of the toe, across the top of the foot and up the leg. I don’t know if I have some kind of nerve problem now or if he screwed everything up, but it’s got me totally agitated. I wish I’d never done this. The whole op in my opinion was unnecessary as the granuloma had come away (just the top, not the root) yet this guy insisted that I had to have the left part of the nail resected to keep it from coming back. Obviously, my foot will never be the same. To top it off, there’s a green color coming up from the bottom of the nail bed, next to where he’d cut and killed the root of the nail, and this scares me.
Anyway, back to when we went in last week; the doc had moved from the office and hadn’t told us! (They had to have known when we went in for the surgery but we got some lame excuse like, “Oh, we thought we’d told everyone…oops!”) So we had to reschedule for today. That’s another rant altogether…the receptionists are clueless and the nurse is beyond worse. I don’t think she knows her bunghole from a manhole cover. (And apparently all three docs at this new place share one blood pressure cuff and forehead thermometer…she had to wait for one of them to be done with it to use it on me.)
So after the doc makes us wait for half an hour, pokes my toe to the point I’m ready to kick him with my other foot, it hurts so bad, and then doesn’t understand how it can be hurting (or turning color) like it is, basically telling me, “Well, I think it’s okay… we’ll see you in a month to see how it’s looking.” After which, according to the receptionists I can’t trust, he’ll be ‘on vacation.’
I’m fit to be tied. Did this guy get his medical license on a pool table on Friday night or what?? So we’re ready to leave, making the next follow-up and then we’re told today’s visit (all 3 minutes or so of it with the doc) will be $130??? WHAT??? We’ve already spent over $1000 on this whole stupid thing, which is not even improving my original condition, and they want MORE money? This quack screws up my toe (and my gait, my balance is now totally off) and gets himself a new building with time off coming up and he wants me to pay for it, I guess?!
Aren’t rechecks supposed to be included in your original visit? I can hardly afford to get a second opinion now-if there’s even another podiatrist in town-and I don’t really want to go back for more charges for nothing!
I’ve never wanted to really sue someone in my life…but this may be a good time to think of starting. I’m afraid all this is going to result in me losing my nail, or worse, my toe. I don’t want to sound brag-ish, but I always liked my toes…they are nice toes and I’ve never had much trouble with my nails till now…today he tells me the granuloma may come back…and now this toe looks like I borrowed Frankenstein’s…never mind how much it damn hurts.
I need to stop just plunging into everything I am told…I am getting screwed from so many directions lately that I am wondering about my own intelligence and sanity. Never have I had this much trouble with anything medical. And my trust issues aren’t improving any thanks to this!
I am sorry this is all happening to you…what a lousy doctors office you are dealing with! They should be ashamed of themselves! I still don’t really think people know how bad getting your toenail removed hurts until it happens to them. It’s almost like getting your entire foot cut off. You should have heard me trying to get people to cover my shift at work when mine came off. People “poo poo’d” me like I was a cry baby that couldn’t even wear a sock! I called all our stores in the district and even some out! No one would help me! Just hang in there, things should get better. And…you so should have kicked at him when he poked your toe. Say it was a reflex……save that for next time >.>
lolz…Honestly, I’m surprised the hub didn’t go for him or at least protest. I’ve had other doctors hurt me while he was standing there and the fury on his face is not to be believed. Yeah, people get money for nuthin’ these days. I think I’m in the wrong business! ^_^ Maybe I should start peeling off people’s toenails! I could probably do a better job! (After all, jut ask my bunnies how much fun it is to have their claws trimmed!) And it is a lot more than you’d think. It throws off how you walk (you favor it to avoid pain), for some odd reason, the next toe starts crowding the injured one and causes MORE discomfort, and the toe and fingertips and lips are the most sensitive, nerve-filled areas of the body! How can your bosses not realize the agony?! You stub your toe? It hurts, doesn’t it?! A little sympathy for the gimps, y’all! xD
lolz…Yeah, I know the color can’t be good. At the very least it’s some serious bruising that was done by his excision of the nail. *whistles at toe sock bunny comment…wonders if you can make sock bunnies out of toe socks?*
MM, How is your foot today? I think you’re not trusting your instincts, ie. if you find yourself writing “quack”, cancel the follow up appt. and go immediately to a different dr. Even your regular internist will know if this is wrong, and might put it in writing for you. But you need his botched job fixed, not further time spent in his office. That whole thing sounds really bad, and you need good care. So dump him. You can report him to the AMA if the second opinion (ie. new primary dr. since you need someone else) if you learn he really did something wrong. Chances are the next opinion won’t blame him, so just get better care.
Yipes! I’ve never had any issues with my feet but I had a fingernail come off before and it was on my right hand…I couldn’t hardly function! I can’t imagine dealing with that on a part of my body that holds up all of my (significant amount of) weight.
You really need to get it rechecked by a competent doctor. You don’t want to lose your whole foot due to gangrene…or cellulitis. If this was one of the bunnies you know you’d be at the vet in a flash. Give yourself AT LEAST the same level of care you’d give them.
lolz! And I KNOW “Dr. H” would do a great job too. She was so good with Jenna yesterday. This is a dog who does NOT like her feet touched much and she sat so well for her while we checked her hot spots. Meh. I guess I have to get off my tuffet and research. Man, I hate having to moonlight between doctors. I never know who knows who and who will put in a heads up to watch out for the ‘obnoxious patient’. I still think most of this is because I obviously insulted the dermatologist who I’d first had look at it by telling her I didn’t have ingrown toenails. Boy did she seem miffed. She probably sent me to this guy to assuage her ego.
Well feh…. Thought I’d found the one other podiatrist who could look at my foot…only to find out, he’s in the same building as the one treating me now. >.< Birds of a feather I guess.
So I’m stuck. My GP isn’t all that wonderful either. The only doc I’d trust with this is my oncologist…and he’s not likely to be of any help.
lolz… Eh. I looked up pictures of ingrown toenails and the resulting surgeries. I don’t recommend it for light browsing. There isn’t an “EEEEWWWW!” loud enough! I have to admit, compared to those, my toe doesn’t look so bad. (even with the green stuff, which I’m thinking has got to be bruising from the trauma to the nail bed)
My leg hurts because I’m reflexively lifting the toe up to keep it from bumping into anything. But yeah, a few weeks of that and favoring it will make other parts of your leg/back/body start doing wibbly-wobbly things.
Still…when I think of how it used to look and even how it looked the day before, I think this was a bit extraneous of an action for my original problem. Like taking a shotgun out after a mosquito.
