So I got a phone call today, from the Hillsboro Police Department on my cell phone.

Apparently yesterday around 60 phone calls were made from my cell number to various people in Hillsboro, very harrassing, disgusting calls the officer said.

Now, my cell phone has been on the arm of my couch since we got back from the cabin at 3 am Monday morning. Neither me nor my hubby called anyone from it. How scary is that? Someone was able to hijack my cell number, and the police couldnt trace it back to the person making hte actual calls. The officer said he tried calling it 20-30 times yesterday, my phone only rang once, and I usually dont answer Unknown calls, which it was. he also said that when he tried callign the number, it either came up as a cell number for the Oregonian newspaper, which according to that newspaper, they dont give employees cell phones, or it came up as the number was disconnected.

So now I have the officer’s phone number and the case number, and he has asked me to contact him if I get any weird calls on my phone or if anythign weird shows up on the bill for the month.

Me thinks I’m going to be changing my cell number now.

          Oh jeeeze!
          That is weird/freaky.

It’s crazy how people can mess around with technology, use your number and never have touched your phone. Kinda scarey. Hopefully the police are able to figure it all out.

I hope so too! Evidently the man who was making the calls was saying to the people who answered not to bother calling the cops cuz they’d never be able to find him.

Whoa, that is scary! I didn’t know that people could hijack your number. At least the cops called you and told you about it. I can imagine someone could hijack the number but not get caught if they didn’t use it to harrass anybody.

They called because they were trying to get the guy on the phone, it wasnt initially to warn me

Well, of course, but at least they did end up warning you 😛

True. And now I know not to use my cell phone for a bit for important calls in case the dude can listen in too!

I had my phone stolen (got it back before the guy got away) and was told that drug dealers will often steal phones and use them to make a few calls (related to drugs, of course) then ditch the phones once the person gets the number shut off. Crazy what people will do!

Sorry to hear Monkeybun. That is scary. I had to change my landline phone number recently because of a situation and it was highly inconvenient.

that is extremely creepy! wow. i sure hope they figure out how the heck some one can do that for future prevention.

a few years back 2 police officers came knocking because some poor woman had placed a 911 call – she was in distress, being beaten up & not talking into the phone – and they traced it to my cell phone. they checked out my phone, questioned me up the yin yang to be sure i wasnt hiding some one and covering for them and finally determined that it couldn’t have been me who had called. they figure that the trace had produced an incorrect number. i was very freaked out by then. i made one of the cops search my house to be sure no one was hiding out anywhere, which is completely illogical but i was so freaked out that they obliged me. i felt so bad for the poor woman who really had called and needed help!

technology does not always work out smoothly for us i guess 😐

                              My brand new GOPhone! has a previously used number on it. I keep getting calls from bill collectors and text messages that say, “Whut up, cuz? Lets get fried!” 0_o;;
I keep tucking these numbers into my reject list, but I don’t think they get blocked from there. I think you have to pay extra for that privilege.

Cell phones are great for emergency communication, but they are so easily hacked. I have to use one to do all my interstate financial calling on too, and it makes me very nervous.

Very creepy. I wish I could change my cell number, but I think it’s written in stone.

Yeah I get calls and texts for a Trisha all the time, but this was different..

The officer did ask specifically if it was a T-Mobile number, which it is.

I wonder if it was someone from the company that your cell is through! Remember that the people have access to phone numbers and texts messages. A girl I worked with a couple of years ago said that she never received any of her text messages yet she was being charged for them. The company was even able to print out the text conversations to “prove” she had been receiving them. It is a scary idea!!  I would either change my number or my service provider!  Good luck either way

Eek! Well that answers my question. They can get numbers out of your phone. MB, did any of your contacts receive these nasty calls? I hardly use my phone / am pretty anti phone actually. This all just make me want to go phone-free even more.

Hmm not that I know of. None of our friends have called to comment on it.
