I know I haven’t been on here in forever – I apologize. But I really need good vibes and thoughts for Dallas…I was gone for 2wks and left both him and Duncan in the care of someone who should have been trustworthy.
Instead, I come home last night to find Dallas in absolutely terrifble shape. He is starved-skinny, I have never seen any animal as skinny as him still alive. And to top it off, his left eye is HIDEOUS. It has some infection type of thing that is just…..really, really horrible. You can’t even see his eye, if that tells you anything. Obviously he can’t see out of it. The person wasn’t not feeding them, but they apparently didn’t realize when he got an infection and went off his food.

As I’ve said before, I live in a really small town. We don’t have any exotic vets out here, the closest one is 3 1/2 hours away, and I made him an appointment there this morning for him to go in tomorrow at 3:30. I am 99% positive he needs to get the eye removed.

There really are only 2 good things in this situation. 1) Duncan is fine; good weight, 100% healthy, etc. and 2) Dallas is in fairly good spirits..he is eating vigorously now and does not appear to be in huge amounts of pain. Even though I know it must hurt like h*ll..he’s still coming up for loves and is still as sweet as a kitten.

I am really worried about him though, I’m afraid they’re going to tell me they can’t do anything or something like that. So please send good thoughts for Dallas and wish both of us luck tomorrow….I’ll keep you all updated….
Thank you so much in advance <3

OMG The poor little guy! I’m so very sad to hear this.  How is Duncan fine but Dallas lost all his weight?

I hope he doesn’t end up losing his eye and that the vet can find out why he’s not eating. My vibes and prayers are with you.

Might want to ask the vet you take him to if there’s a vet she can work with that’s local to you who may not be a rabbit specialist, but can continue a treatment for you if necessary. Most cat and dog vets are at least somewhat familiar with rabbits. Enough that they can help follow a protocol set by a specialist and do check-ups etc. If you’ve heard of a local dog/cat vet that someone you know trusts, you may be able to set up a relationship.

I hope that you get good news about Dallas at the vet visit- but if it is mainly his eye that is a major issue and he can regain weight by being fed properly- the good news is that removing the eye will cure the eye issue.  Sounds awful, but if the eye is determined to be too damaged the pet is in less pain after the eye is removed.  But your vet after doing some tests on the eye may decide to try to medicate the eye first and let it try to heal on its own.

I am so sorry to hear that someone let you and your precious babies down- I would be so furious- as I am sure that you are!

Get better soon Dallas- and please keep us updated!

Oh my goodness! Poor Dallas!!! MAJOR healing vibes for him!!! Let us know how the vet visit goes.

Now, I don’t know what your situation is with the pet sitter, and I hope I’m not coming off too horribly insensitive… but just reading this story infuriated me on your behalf! You might want to consider legal action. I’m not a lawyer nor am I involved with law enforcement; however it sounds like a pretty clear case of neglect (the sitter, not you!). Just because he/she was feeding/watering them and changing litter, doesn’t mean it’s ok to ignore it if the bunny stops eating, becomes incredibly skinny, and gets an infected eye. I would have thought they’d call you at least… If this was a pet sitter with a license or a business, it might be easier to pursue a case simply because if they have a license, they’re held to a higher standard. You’ll probably be able to get them to pay your vet bills, if not damages as well. If it’s a business, you can also report them to the Better Business Bureau. If it was a family friend, it’ll get dicey if you bring a law suit against them, and you might not want to sabotage your relationship with that person. However, you might still want to ask the sitter to pay Dallas’s vet bills. and see what he/she says. If you want to consider a law suit, take pictures of his situation now before you go to the vet and document everything and hang on to the vet records (and get the vet records from before you left o your trip, saying that your bunnies were in good health). Like I said, I’m not a lawyer … they’d be better able to tell you what you need to do, if that’s something you want to consider. Just a suggestion.

Also, you’ll want to watch him for signs of GI distress.  If he hasnt been eating much for a few days and then all of a suggen gets lots of rich veggies and pellets it’ll be a shock to his system.

Oh another thing, have the vet check his teeth too.  Soemtimes eye problems are a result of misaligned teeth.

Anyway, the most important thing is getting Dallas back to his normal healthy self!

                                                                Okay I’m finally home.
First can I just say that the support Dallas(and Duncan and I) have received here brought tears to my eyes. You are all simply amazing, and I cannot thank you enough at ALL!!!! It is nice to know he’s got such a grouping of people beyond him thinking good thoughts for him. <3

Here’s all what happened at the vets.
First off – his eye needs, and is going, to be removed.
Dallas’ eye was so bad that it made an exotics-specialty vet(who is considered the best in the region) say “oh…WOW” and be SPEECHLESS for a little bit. She knew the second she looked at it that there really wasn’t any other choice except to amputate the eye. She flat out told me we could try oral medication first, but that in her honest opinion she really did not think it would work at ALL. I trust her opinion greatly, and since she thought it was best for his well-being to have the eye removed, that is what will be happening. He will go into surgery tomorrow morning and I will get a call before 12:30pm saying how it went..she said they’d call me as soon as he woke from anesthesia.

She said what she believes happened was he got an abscess behind his eye that ruptured(he is missing hair on his chest from leakage from the eye), then caused an infection. The infection is so severe it is EATING HIS CORNEA. It’s literally just eating his eye now…god I cannot tell anyone how ANGRY this makes me. He has to be in such an incredible amount of pain, I can’t even imagine it. I am glad for him that by tomorrow he won’t have to suffer through that any longer. He also weighs a measly 4 1/2 lbs.

The vet is really great, and I have 100% faith in her to keep him safe in surgery. I am still a nervous wreck and will be until I get a call saying everything went fine. I’m really worried for him, especially being so underweight and being put under the already-risky anesthesia. I will be picking him up tomorrow between 4 – 6 pm. We’ll probably pick him up around 5:30, so I’ll be home around 9pm and update this letting you all know how he is doing. I went to Petsmart today and got him a big rabbit cage, because I’m fairly certain being one-eyed will be pretty awkward and scary for him for a while, and I want him to just rest…and I got toys and papaya treats for him, too.

All I can say is nobody stop your good vibes yet!!!!! He can use every last drop of them.
And thank you all again for the endless support..it is so so SO appreciated!!!
                                                                Hugs to you all.

It was a family friend, who told me had good bunny knowledge. I would like to call BS on that now.
I don’t know everything, as I’ve been mainly just focusing on getting Dallas better before worrying about dealing with the…’offender’, if you will. What I DO know is that she did come feed them daily. What she failed to do was take notice and alert me that Dallas went into hiding and wouldn’t come out for anyone or anything(including veggies, treats..you name it). She claims she thought he missed me and was pining, so didn’t do anything. In actuality, he was in tremendous pain.
Also, Duncan is doing pretty well being separated from Dallas….he is searching for him, but not super upset!! He’s still in a good mood, so yay for that!

Sounds like your vet knows what she’s doing, so that’s some comfort at least. And what I wouldn’t give to give a piece of my mind to that person… Sigh. Anyway, you’re right, you definitely need to focus on getting Dallas healed up right now. Let us know how the surgery goes. And let us know what comes of the situation with the sitter. I so wish I was a lawyer… I would take your case and press charges for you pro bono. Lol.

Thanks for the update. It’s good you feel confident in the vet. One less thing to worry about. By removing the eye, she should be able to really get a good look at what was going on behind it. I’m certain after some time Dallas will adjust to having just one eye. It may even be his has gotten used to it if his vision has been impaired.

It’s a tricky situation with the pet sitter / family friend. If they are an animal lover, hearing that Dallas is having his eye removed may give her a real jolt. Abscesses can be present and not cause pain for a long time. From what you’ve said though, this one did while you were away. I sort of want to be more understanding that she didn’t pick up on the abscess – but his not eating and weight loss should have warranted a call to you or a trip to the vet. I don’t know… If your tentative about having a conflict with this person, perhaps take it as an opportunity to educate her on some of the red flag points with rabbits. Least she’ll know if she ever has her own or cares for someone elses.

Hope to hear soon that Dallas is home and reunited with you and Duncan. (((continued vibes)))

At the very least it cant be a learning experience for her – unfortunate that it had to come at the cost of Dallas’s eye.

It’s hard to say how this person would be feeling….If it were me, I’d be sick to my stomach. I’m trying to think of a similar scenario I could be in. Like, I really love dogs and look after them for people sometimes. But I don’t have a dog or a great deal of knowledge about their needs. Well I know the basics. So if I’d missed something that put the dog in my care in jeopardy – I would be hard pressed to forgive myself. Actually, I looked after my sisters dog years ago when she was studying interstate. He was 1 yr old when he died while in my care. For years I felt I let him and her down. I was told he died from an aneurysm but still felt guilt at not having walked him enough. He was a little bit tubby and didn’t always get a daily walk. I felt I contributed to his death and as I was there when he went, it stayed with me a long time. It was only years later that I found out he was actually baited. I think my family thought it best not to tell me that part.

Anyway…sorry, as that story is not the same! I’m just saying guilt can be it’s own punishment.

Fingers crossed for a good surgery! You are so lucky to have such a rabbit-savvy to go to. I have read lots about blind rabbits or rabbits with only one eye (as I was looking at adopting one once), and they cope really well. Especially if they have another rabbit to support them. So no worries. He will be just fine. You should however read up a bit on it, as there are a few things you can do to make it easier for him.

I’m so sorry both he and you had to go through this. I am sure he must have hoping for you to come back soon from your holiday to take care of him.

I agree with JG about guilt being its own punishment. My parents who have three cats on their own and have always had cats, looked after mine once when I went on holiday. When I came back, they told me that he was doing so great and spent most of the time sleeping under their bed…when I got to him, he was practially unconscious due to a high fever and a bad infection due to a cat bite. The vet said it was a really close call and he would have died within a day or so, if we hadn’t rushed him to the vet. What I’m saying is, that it is so easy to miss small signals if you don’t know the pet personally and know its routines…even if you are a pet lover and have rabbits on your own.

                                                                                          Alright…..not a great update.

I got a call at 11:45am…, and after hearing what she said, my heart dropped and blood ran cold. Things didn’t go well AT ALL this morning when he was in surgery.
They put him under anesthesia and he stopped breathing. His heart rate was falling pretty fast, too. She(vet’s assistant) told me they were doing everything they could, and to stay by the phone and they’d call me back as soon as something changed. It took 15 minutes for them to call back. I was just frozen inside and out the entire time. I just kept repeating “Please let Dallas live” in my head the whole time, and imagining me taking him home and everything I would do. You know, positive thinking right??
So they called back and it was the vet this time. She sounded pumped and happy, and told me he was fine and okay now and they reversed the anesthesia. They didn’t even get his eye taken out. It was right before she started that he stopped breathing.

What she wants to do is keep him over the weekend to monitor him and make sure he’s eating/drinking well. She started him on antibiotics yesterday and will continue giving them to him throughout the weekend. If he is in good enough shape, she wants to aim for doing the surgery Monday morning – so that’s the current plan. If all goes well, he’ll be in surgery Monday morning.

To say the least, I broke down once I got off the phone with her. I thought I was about to lose him. I’m so proud of him..I wish I could hug him and kiss him and tell him I love him. I am TERRIFIED for Monday.
Everyone PLEASE PLEASE think good thoughts for him on Monday!!!! It’s scarily “iffy” right now. Just the fact that he stopped breathing soon after going under isn’t promising. He’s a fighter and I know he can do it..he just needs a lot of help. My poor boy. This is such a mess..

Again, can’t thank you all enough for the support!! It means the world to me.

He’s with a great vet and I know he’s getting the best care. Plus, giving him some time to strengthen up for the surgery monday is probably a good thing too. AND he’s got such a huge army of people behind him! We’re all staying very hopeful and positive about it.
I AM going through Dallas-withdrawals though – boy, do I miss him or what!!!! It’s so funny..here I’m gone for 2 weeks and miss him, but still not as much as right now, one day later!
It’s just knowing he’s hurting and I’m not there to comfort him, you know. I don’t want him to think I’ve just abandoned him. Plus he has no toys! Cause I didn’t know he was going to be there longer than a day. I wish I was close enough to go drops some off and see him. The vet assistant helping with his case LOVES him though, she was cuddling him and rubbing his belly, telling him it was okay and calling him baby. And telling me how he’s such a sweetheart. It was comforting to see that.

They said they were going to call this evening to give me an update, but never did. Honestly, I’m almost happier they didn’t because it means everything is going well…..no news is great news!!!
I work from 10am – 10pm tomorrow and Sunday. I’m assuming they’ll call me tomorrow and let me know how he’s doing(probably Sunday, too), I’ll let you all know what they say whenever I can after work. If they don’t call by 5:30, I’m going to call them.

Sorry I’m rambling, just nervous and tired energy coming out. Have a good night and weekend everyone

Mainly he’s being a little more lethargic, not playing or hopping around too much. Still eating and drinking fine, though, which is good! Although, I found I have to feed him veggies for 2 rabbits, because when I feed him his own regular amount, he leaves half of the celery – Dallas’ favorite in the world. I don’t want to disappoint him too much, so just clean it up when he isn’t around that area.

Tomorrow is the big day. The vet will call me before surgery to tell me how he’s been doing, then call again after the surgery. I will pick him up tomorrow between 4 – 6pm and by this time tomorrow – he’ll be HOME!!!

I worked 13 hour shifts at work today and yesterday, which was so perfect. Although Dallas never left my mind for a second, it made it possible for me to use my pent up nervous/scared energy in useful ways instead of sitting around doing nothing and worrying.

At this moment I feel really good about tomorrow. I feel like everything’s going to be fine. I can’t wait for this to be over and him to be back home. Man! What an ordeal it’s been..

Anyway! It’s late and I’m going to chill and watch some tv. I’ll update you all as soon as I know anything tomorrow….I took the day off work, so will be by the computer when I get the phone calls. You’ll all have live updates! Thanks again to EVERYONE for standing behind and supporting me, Dallas, and Duncan.

With the idea of raising the mood of the thread – here are 2 pictures of the lover-boys together when all was well. Let’s all picture Dallas in this nice of shape. =)

I don’t know if you’ll see this before you go but there’s a little trick you can try that might help with D&D’s reunion. If you take along a towel or blanket that they share, you can rub Dallas over with it to transfer a scent. Then he’ll smell more familiar to Duncan. I don’t know if this truly works but it won’t hurt to try it. Hopefully the boys will have no trouble and you won’t need to use any tricks. All the best!

Dallas is doing wonderfully! Though they drugged him up big time so he wouldn’t be in pain, so he slept 99% of the way home! It was so sweet though, at one point he came forward in the carrier for some lovin, so I opened the door and he immediately stretched out 50% on my arm and 50% in the carrier, sighed, then passed out asleep on me for a long, long time. He was very happy to see his momma, and vice versa!!!!!!
He’s much more awake now, and pretty disoriented by not being able to see fully. He already ran into my arm, but he’s in a large SUPER comfy cage now to rest up and heal. He doesn’t seem to be in much pain at all right now, which is a great thing!
I let him and Duncan sniff each other and they were happy buns, but I know Dallas pretty well and can sense he just wants “alone” time right now, he’s a little nervous. I’ll let them be together tomorrow, it’s late right now anyway..I think a night of sleep at home will do Dallas a lot of good.

Andi, I can tell you what they’ve got him on now. They sent me home with 3 meds, as follows(all to be given by mouth):
Baytril Solution for infection; .2ML twice daily for 10 days
Meloxicam for pain from surgery; .05ML once daily for 5 days
AVix Booster Natural Elixir for Immune Support; .3ML daily until out(fairly decent size totally full bottle, should last a while!)

That’s all for tonight. We’re all tuckered out and headin’ to bed! I’ll share photos of Dallas and of Duncan and Dallas’ reunion tomorrow! Hope everyone has a great night.

Dallas is great this morning, the swelling has already gone down a ton, and it’s less irritated looking. He is just having some problems with eating/drinking, he has trouble with the depth of the water in his bowl and does kind of a head-bobbing thing right now, but he’s getting better at it. Eating, I think he just has a really bad after taste in his mouth, so he doesn’t want to eat a lot of things(which isn’t so good!) but he will eat veggies and such, so I think it’s going away.

I let him and Duncan see each other through the cage bars, and it was very obvious Dallas was unhappy about it. He immediately put both front paws on the cage and started biting the bars; pretty sure he was doing to the bars what he wanted to do to Duncan. Duncan was pretty surprised about it! I just put him in a pen about a foot from Dallas, so they can still hear/see each other because that doesn’t seem to both Dallas. But he is definitely not wanting to be too close to him right now.
I know he’s still just very not himself and in pain, I’m sure it’ll change once he’s healed up! I’ll take pictures of Dallas later!

Any special care to cleaning the site?

The reason i am asking, is i had to take in a bunny who had the same thing, But the situation/story is a crappy one. Neglected bunny, bad (UNDERSTATMENT, terrible!) Vet and then me removing the animal from the home trying to save him. Because of this i am curious what ways other Vet are dealing with this, as mine own Vet told me that removing a infected eye is like removing cancer you have to be very careful and make sure to get it all.

I have cared for many handicap bunnies (and other animals), and I can tell you, they don’t know they are different. Your little man will adjust to having one eye quickly and never think anything of it.

They didn’t give me any instructions on having to clean the site – just said that the swelling would go down and it’d flatten out. It looks really good this morning. The vet called this morning to see how he’s doing, and told me to call them if I need anything at all.

What a mess that must have been. I am glad to here they adjust well and don’t know they’re different, cause he certainly knows something’s wrong with him today!

And here I’M supposed to be the addicted one!!!!! lol.

Moose started Monkey back up on doing it, I had cured her of the biting of the bars awhile back >.<

You may want to try a meeting, if they are apart too long you’ll have to rebond all over again.

Better for all involved. Don’t want to make the poor little man feel worse.

I’m so glad that he is doing well after the surgery. I haven’t been online in a few days but I’ve been thinking about him, wondering what the situation was. I certainly hope you’ve let the “caretaker” in on all the details of what you and Dallas have been through since you’ve been back.

Dallas is recovering about as best as he possible can. His mouth/throat was sore for about 2 days after the surgery, and he wasn’t eating much except SOME veggies and a nibble on a pellet or two. That was worrisome for a while, but he’s bounced back from that and eats all or almost all of his veggies, munching on more pellets and is eating some hay as well. Just taking a little time. I really wish he would eat like a pig!!!! He’s still soo skinny.

I’m getting a ton of silent treatment from him, because he highly dislikes having to have his medications. I get punished by him in mostly 2 ways; One, he won’t come up for love from me(he gets kisses and pets nonetheless though!). Two, if I offer him ANY food, he won’t show the slightest interest..I have to put it in front of him and once I leave and he thinks I can’t see him, THEN he’ll eat it. I swear, if he could stick his tongue out at me, he would!!!!

He seems a little bit depressed/lethargic to me still, just doesn’t have that twinkle in his eye right now. I’m pretty sure it’s from how skinny he is..he’s doing everything to conserve energy which is a good thing I guess! I just have to keep reminding myself it’s only been four days since the surgery..I can’t expect him to be completely himself that soon after.

I have pictures I took last night, but I’m going to post them in a new thread!
