Okay, so JG pulled out of getting a third, but I have to admit that I have been looking as well…I’d like to find someone to replace Jack and because it seems so strange to only have a pair. Of course, I guess I can never find someone so addicted to pets and cuddles as Jack and who will get into my bed in the morning to snuggle or nap on my stomach in the evening on the couch

I would like to “save” a new senior to honor Jack, but looking through the various ads, I came across this beauty :

She is 6 months, but her owner (14 year old girl) just bought a new baby bunny, so she wants to get rid of this one. Apparently, she gave little Double Luck 4 days to find a new home, but she says that she can let a friend take care of her until I can go get her…if I want her.

She looks so cute and I think she deserves to get a home, where she is appreciated. But it’s a  girl!! Uh, wonder how Molly will take this. And she is just 6 months…not even close to being a senior.

And oh, so many reasons not to…I mean she probably won’t be anything like Jack, and that was what I was looking for.

Okay, so JG pulled out of getting a third,

          For now….

lol. Oh dear. I think us “crazy bunny people” are quite vulnerable post-Easter too – with all these needy rabbits turning up. I must admit, I did think of Molly in reading this too. I have to wonder if this girl will be advertising the baby in a few months time too….    I’ve gotta say, Double Lucks extra whiskers are pretty cute & I bet she has big brown eyes!

Are you still planning on getting a dog? I’m wondering if perhaps concentrating on this rather than rabbits might be better? Especially so close to having to say goodbye to Jack and the other 2 adjusting to his absence. I can completely understand why your are looking though – don’t get me wrong.

Also, I wanted to ask – are you been affected by the Icelandic volcano? I remember you said you were going to Greece sometime and was thinking it was soon(???)

Yes, and that complicates everything! We are actually going to Greece on Saturday (if the airlines are allowed to take off, that is…) and for those of you who don’t know it, we were going to visit a shelter and probably adopt a dog. But because of Jack, I’ve been thinking that I would prefer to get a new bunny and then put the dog thing on hold.

The thing is…I’m quiting my job today! I’m so excited about it. It will leave me with lots of time on my hand (until I get a new job) and I thought I could bond the new bunny and then after a month or two get the dog.

Hmm, I know how it sounds.

Hey I hope your flight goes well to Greece! How exciting! (we will want to see lots of pictures —oh and some off the plane too so we can see what that volcano is doing to the air! ) plz!!

Your heart will tell you when you find the right bun bun to honor Jack. There is no hurt in looking – you will find the right one and it will call to you. I will be here to cheer you on as you find him or her!

I’ll see if I can take some pictures, Lintini

This bunny just looks so cute and innocent and I just hate the thought of this little girl being unwanted and being given to another kid who looses interest within a year. I do have the time to do lots of bonding sessions, but IF we also get a dog from a greek shelter, I will have my hands full.

The thing is, Double Luck is of course not spayed, but the owner says she gets along fine with other bunnies, so she has probably not reached sexual maturity just yet. Maybe Molly and Karl are fine just being the two of them (Molly was freaking out the evening when Jack was put to sleep, but she has calmed down. She was running frantically from room to room thumping and not being to her senses, but now they are calm and cuddly. They are not leaving each other’s side, so I guess they are still adjusting), and it’s me thinking that a trio is better than a pair.

I emailed the girl for the second time…you really need to stop me now if you intend to!

Oh, and worst part is that the girl working at the greek shelter is also putting pressure on me as she e-keeps mailing me pictures of dogs, she thinks would work so well with the bunnies. Who to rescue? A dog or a bunny?

                    Karla,
You are big hearted and so I don’t want you to take what I’m about to say as a reflection on you.

                    This girl should be smacked!!!!!

She infuriates me, and it would be great if she were pulling a total hoax to get sweet people suckered in to getting a rabbit, but I’m afraid she’s just clueless and telling the truth, which might even be worse. There. Rant over.

She is getting a new baby so dumping this one. VERY suspicious. I totally agree that she will be advertising the baby in 4 months. conveniently the right length of time for weaning new baby bunnies, don’t you think? and she gets along fine with other bunnies? Why give her up if she has other bunnies as well? I think we’re talking about a litter or an amateur breeder here. So if you fall for the bunny, that’s one thing. DO NOT fall for this sucker story. It’s bull.

Next possible issue: if she is not spayed yet, and “gets along” with other bunnies, she could already be pregnant. So if you did take her, it could be on condition that she be cleared by a vet as not being pregnant, get that in writing, and when you suggest those are your terms, watch this owner squirm and not give her to you after all. I am willing to bet she is pregnant, and the owner isn’t ready to sell another litter so soon. You would be stuck unless you get her to at least sign a contract saying she will take the litter or pregnant doe back if she won’t agree to a vet pre-sale exam. She won’t sign that either, I’d bet on it.

All this is my way of saying that you have seen an adorable bunny (no arguement there) and a crummy owner. If you want 3 again – and I would not recommend getting a third followed by a dog, but only the third bunny and then pass on a new dog – then she is a beautiful girl who would be a lovely addition assuming she is not pregnant. Plus you have to pay for her spay.

But if your heart is set on your bonded pair and a dog, and you have time to train and watch the dog with the bunnies, then don’t be derailed by this sob story and just get the dog you want. Please keep in mind that even our dog trainer members never leave their dogs alone with their bunnies unsupervised. You can’t let them be free roam together. It’s just dangerous. So when you consider getting a dog be sure you are set up to accommodate separating them safely when you’re not home.

Sorry to come down so hard here (haven’t finished morning coffee so always a bit cranky in AM) but I just want you to step back from this awful person and be objective about what YOU want, why, and what you need to consider first. After that, follow your heart.

I don’t take it the hard way at all – I do tend to let my heart rule and I’m quite spontaneous, which is a bad combination, so I appreciate it so much when people can stop me in time. And I value your opinions highly in here.

I had not considered the fact that she could be pregnant…the girl says she has two bunny sisters (Double Luck is one of them), but that she only has a hutch for two, so she is giving this one up. Actually, a lot of the young girls on that particular forum are amateur breeders. I cannot understand how their parents can let them…or even let this girl give up her 6 month old bunny.

The thing is the eyes of this bunny has gotten to me, and then I feel bad for not helping out. I know I’m not supposed to save every animal in the world, but I feel so bad if I ignore an animal, that I know I can help. And sorry for keep going on about Jack, but I feel that Jack’s death makes sense if it gives me the chance to rescue another rabbit in need.

But you are right, RabbitPam. I think perhaps I should go for the JG approach: wait it out. We’ll go to Greece and I will see if I fall in love with one of the dogs. And then, think about what to do.

She’s so cute. Very unique looking.

If the girl’s story is true, what a spoiled rotten stinkin brat. Great reason to get a new rabbit…because she got bored of one that’s only 6 months old. It does seem a bit strange but then again there are some really weird people out there.

I think it’s a great way to honor Jack by adopting another bunny in need. If you do, however, decide on going with a dog, you could always make a donation or sponsor a shelter rabbit in Jack’s name. Just a thought.

if you got a dog could you still get a third bunny latter after the dog is settled in? or do you have to chose a dog or a bunny?

Wow, she is beautiful. Her eyes remind me of Pip’s…she has the same bearing that Pip has in her face. Looks like a young half lionhead too…look at those whiskers!

Pam raises some good points, you need to be careful here.

Sorry if this is a stupid question and I don’t mean to sound rude…but…you are in Denmark but going to Greece to adopt a dog? I don’t understand, it seems like a long way to go. (Not that I wouldn’t travel miles for the right pup who needed me, believe me.) I agree that it probably should be one or the other, but not both. That might be too overwhelming for all concerned.

The airlines are allowing flights to leave too soon, in my opinion….I have seen evidence of planes not making it through volcanic ash, we had one crash in Anchorage years ago when the Mt. Spur (?) volcano erupted near there. PLEASE be careful if you’re going to travel. ((((((((safe trip vibes)))))))))

Of course, no bun can replace dear Jack, but I do understand how you feel. If you do wind up getting this bunny, I wish you every happiness with her. But yes, caution is key in these ‘rush to adopt’ advertisements. I’ve been burned myself recently more than a few times and it’s a real toss up as to how honest folks are these days…even at 14.

Karla, I’m not at all sure how it works in Denmark, when you quit a job that is. Here in the states, you get no compensation unless it’s for a good reason – and well employers fight those benefits because well they are taxed on them and stuff. We aren’t very employee friendly here in the US. And our unemployment is very high. Not sure what your prospects are for a new job either – so that being said – it’s a terrible time to get a new pet unless you can afford it financially and obviously, I don’t know your circumstances.

I have to say as well stay off those ad’s – in my opinion, you are helping those people more than you are helping the animals – they threaten and give those animals away and you know what they do…they get more animals – it’s a vicious cycle – like breeders and pet shops.

I no longer look at those ad’s or Petfinders – it just makes me want rabbits that I truly am not in a position to help – I feel that my priority is the rabbits I have in my care and well, that’s just hard enough as it is.

I say, just wait a bit before you find another bunny. Don’t rush into anything.

You know I finally came to my senses last night, but then this morning the girl wrote me, and oh, I was back to wanting to adopt the little bunny. But I think you have a good point, Sarita. I’m not helping this bunny, but the girl, so that she can continue doing this. I had actually decided that Molly and Karl need more time as they are not their usual selves.

Sarita: we get benefits here from an unemployement fund (sort of an insurance that is optional if you wish to have it, and if you don’t, then the government will provide you with benefits although at a lesser amount and you will have to take the jobs they ask you to). Only thing is that if you leave you job and not being fired, you won’t get any money the first 3 weeks from the fund. But my bf and I are doing alright so money is not an issue in this regard.

MM: good point about Greek dogs vs. Danish dogs in shelters. It is a big discussion here between people, some are against it and only think you should help animals in your own country, and then there are people like me who don’t differ. So my reason? Well, honestly, dogs in Danish shelters live a comfortable life compared to Greek dogs and cats. The majority of Greeks do not like animals and they are very cruel to them. They poison them, molest them et.c and are completely against neutering at the same time and let them roam the streets on their own.

A few Greek people and lots of foreign organisations are trying to set up shelters and help the dogs and cats off the streets and neuter those they cannot take in. They need the money and they need the space to help more animals, so most of these organisations put their animals up for adoption in Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark and UK to raise more money. Adopting a dog from Greece means giving a dog a chance, that only comes once in its lifetime and at the same time helping others. Even when these animals are at the shelter, local people will do what it takes to stop these shelters. They try to poison the animals that are inside the shelter, they harass the volunteers and they cut up the fences.

It’s not that I do not want to adopt a dog from a Danish shelter, but due to a new law coming up in regard to dogs, most dogs there are American Staffordshire Terriers, which is not the right breed for us. Also, what has absolutely made the difference is that fact that I know a girl working at one of these shelters in Greece. So we are actually just going to Greece on holiday and once there we will visit her shelter and see if we fall for a dog. It doesn’t mean we are necessarily getting one as my boyfriend is a bit intimidated by getting a dog from another country
I just want to clarify that this is the general attitude in Greece, but it does not mean that there are not animal loving people there at all!

Mocha ‘I could definitely get a bunny later on again if we went for the dog now. We have been talking about getting a dog for ages, and when we decided I should quit my job this summer, it was just a great timing to get a dog. Then all this with Jack just made me look at getting a new bunny instead. Getting a dog and a bunny at the same time, is just a bit too overwhelming, and my bf would say no as well.

But I think I will stick with my original thought: get a senior male! And then stay away from private ads (what was I even doing

That’s interesting that you seem to have a prevalence of Staffordshires in your shelters. Although the husky is the predominant breed in Alaska, we also seem to have an overabundance of pit bull/boxer type dogs here and I always wondered why. I do not fancy them as a breed either, I’ve heard too many horror stories (and equally some good ones) about these dogs attacking people, so I need a more steady canine at my side.
It does sound like a nice idea then to pick one out from Greece. I’m sorry to hear they have such trouble with finding homes for them there.
