Any fellow BB members sew as well? What do you sew?

Today, I am going to Joanns Fabrics to get a Sewing Machine. A few friends told me that Joanns is getting rid of their sewing machines  and the one that they recommend is $100 off  It is a SINGER brand one, that sews really well and even has an LCD screen

I have hand sewed as a child, and my mom sewed me clothing as a little girl (I hated the frilly stuff!! I was such a tomboy!) and I would use the machine  ..

I don’t know if anybody has heard of this author(s) but it is crafts by Aranzi Aronzo  2 Japanese ladies that make cute stuff! I am going to learn how to make simple pouches and bags, and plushies! When I learn to make each, I am going to make my own designs

My mom used to sew all of her own clothes when she was in grad school. I guess they were poor and she didn’t have anything else to do in the boonies 😛

So she taught me how to sew as a kid and we did some projects together. I always get excited about it, but just don’t have the follow through for crafty things.

In junior high we had to take home ec, tech ed, and art – each for one third of the year. I loved the home ec part where we got to sew. I think I finished my projects way ahead of everyone else because I had already learned. I still have those boxers and fabric bag I made!

            Sew….
I machine quilt, and do very simple clothes. Simple slip dresses and skirts for summer – all out of 100% cottonfabrics. For quilting I have done several projects on my sewing machine. Right now I’m working on designing a tie quilt – I have a suitcase of my dads ties (he pasted a few years ago) and I want to cut the fat end off at 18 inchs and lay the ties next to each other until a circle is made then this will be stitched down to a solid white fabric. And I’m trying to figure out how to use the skinny part – maybe around the borders. A favorite quilt that I love is Storm at Sea – you can google for pictures. I have made a couple as gifts and they are just beautiful. Check out your local library or craft store for books on any subject regarding sewing.
I also make “raggedy” blankets for buns.
I find/buy old towls (yardsales or thrift stores) that are not stained or have holes and well sew two together (length wise) to put in bun pens – then I can shake them out and wash as needed.

Good luck – and have fun…. Akemi, Pebbles & Dante

I love needle crafts (x-stitch and embroidery) but am still new at the sewing machine. I bought it last year on clearance, it has 80 computerized stitches and lots of neat functions, but I really wish I would have gotten a simpler one to start. It’s really complicated. So far all I’ve done is sew a border on a blanket I made for my nephew and I bought some faux-fur and made a little sitting spot for Bindi.

I LOVE Aranzi Aronzo! I bought the book “Let’s make Cute Stuff” but haven’t got around to making anything yet.

I love to sew, simple things. I learned to sew slacks and things because I was so long legged nothing fit right. Now I like to sew for the piggies and bunnies. I’ve ordered cuddle cups and tunnels from people on Etsy.com and then found some patterns. It’s easier to keep the piggies condo clean by sewing several fleece blankets for flooring instead of using litter.

My grandson is wanting to take the piggies to the Guinea Pig Hoedown in Dallas next month so I guess we’ll have to see if we can make a simple costume for one of them. He’s found a site that has lots of different costumes from vampires to ballerina tutus!

Make sure and post some photos, I’m anxious to see what you create!

I design and build historical and steampunk costumes.

One thing to keep in mind about “Singers” – they are franchised out now and the quality is not what is used to be.

Wendy is so right about Singer.  My mom had a singer when I was growing up and I just assumed they were still the same good quality “tank” of a sewing machine they had always been.  I was wrong.  My husband bought me a Singer for Christmas – I did not sew at the time, but he heard me mention it once and thought “why not”.  So I went to Joann’s to class with my new Singer.  It was a nightmare.  The Singer would not sew more than 2 layers of cloth and I finally just stopped going to class.  Then I went to another Joann’s in another town (the sewing instructor in our town was less than charming) and she showed me the Viking.  I bought the entry model of the Viking for about $100.00 more than we payed for the Singer and it was amazing.  It will sew multiple layers of denim and is very easy to figure out.  It is not digital, but for just starting out, it is perfect.

I used to sew a lot. I’ve got boxes and boxes of patterns and fabric. 2 sewing machines and a serger. I’m really looking forward to getting back into it.

BT, have you looked for patterns online? When I briefly got into knitting I was able to find patterns for just about anything online. Some cost money and had to be ordered, but there were many free ones too.

For a beginning sewist, I recommend finding a place that does sewing machine repairs and buying a reconditioned machine.  A lot of them are older machines and will sew through almost anything .  Often they come with lessons and some kind of warranty – and it’s usually a really good deal.

For knitting patterns, there is a community at http://www.lionbrand.com/ that you can join that has access to free patterns.  I recently learned to crochet and it was recommended to me, although I’ve not used it yet.

Do you know the “HAHA BUNNIES?” I made so many of ’em

The book is really simple… I made the buns by hand..

Singers are for amateurs like myself.. I plan to get a Brother or another brand in the future
