I know how good rabbit poo is for the garden, but I have a question.  I use Yesterday’s News for litter and it’s biodegradable, but should I separate the poo pellets from the litter because of the urine or can I just throw it all in there?  So happy it’s Spring!!!

I am throwing the whole mess in. I figure that the wild bunnies pee in the garden, why not Mellow! Also, the urine seems to break down the YN more quickly. The trouble I am having is separating the extra hay from the poop and litter as I don’t want it to wrap around the tines of the tiller.

Bunny poo is great for the garden. You can just throw it all in there it should be fine.

I cannot see a problem with using the litter also.  I have not used YN- but wood stove pellets turn to mush when soaked.  And rabbit pee seems to be unlike another other pet pee- it starts off clear and then over time turns yellow, brown, etc.

Rabbit waste is supposed to make great compost since it does not need the curing time like other manures do.

Thanks everyone!  I AM a little disappointed – I was so looking forward to separting pee and poo .  I’m pretty sure that was not going to happen at all if I had to do it that way.  With any luck, it will repel deer – evil Bindi Lu Poo.

I feel a little silly saying this, but being able to use the bunny litter in my garden was one of the reasons I got a bunny.

Do you have to wait for the YN to decompose completely? I throw all of mine in a composting bin and hopefully it will be ready to use when I plant this season… I had to get a second bin due to all the bunny poo!

We have used pellets and this year we got hay growing…oat & timothy!  Bunz loved it and when it came time to cut is back, we dried a bunch.  Like recycling  !!!

I need to get some bins for the poo.  What do you use for bins?

Since we live in town I just bought those black plastic composting bins. You can probably find one at home depot, lowes, ace hardware, sears ect. You can also make one out of wood if you are handy.

                          Something like this: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07160699000P?vName=Lawn%20&%20Garden=&cName=OutdoorTools&Supplies=&sName=Edging%20&%20Landscaping%20Materials=&psid=FROOGLE01&sid=IAx20090815x000001&aff=Y

You can probably make one for cheeper, but I’m lazy and we need it to look decent for when we move in a few years.

Bunny poop is a great fertilizer – high in nitrogen.  If you just separate out the poops they are considered “cold” and you can use them directly on your plants or make a “tea” and use it to water your plants.  Google “bunny poop tea” for proportions.  I container garden and I simply layer in some nice dry poops with the potting mix when I set up the container for the season, and i have the nicest plants in the building.\

If you don’t want to separate and use a wood or paper based litter (Yesterday’s News, Feline Pine, wood stove pellets) you can just dump the box in your compost pile.  The ammonia from the pee has to “cook” out and the paper/wood has to degrade a bit before you can use it.
