Trouble and Zinnia got into a horrible fight at the bunny bonder’s house this morning.  Trouble is fine but Zinni has a gash in her neck that’s over 2 inches long.  I haven’t seen it yet but I’m pretty sure based on the way the vet described this to me that I’m going to be pretty horrified when I finally do.

She had to be sedated and sutured AND glued.  She also has an ulcer on her eye that the vet said may be from this morning’s fight as well.  When I bring her home she is not allowed to “walk or hop” until her wound heals.  I have to block off her cage so that all she has room to do is sit there.

It’s gotta be worse than I thought.  To not be allowed to even walk around?  There’s much hand wringing going on in my house right now.

I’m going now to clean her cage, set up her barrier, and get rid of the Trouble smell.  I’m squirting down the front of her cage with vinegar and washing the floor directly in front of it with vinegar so she won’t be nervous coming back home.

14 stitches in her shoulder, the tear is longer than my index finger, and an ulcer on her eye, probably from a toenail during the scuffle. It’s worse than I imagined. My poor baby girl. She’s home now and resting. I will take pictures tomorrow. Tonight I’m going to just leave her be in her space. Thank you for all the well wishes. She needs all the vibes she can get.

Sounds like what happened when we tried to bond all of ours. Reno and Keelie really went at each other any chance they got. We usually managed to keep them separated but we’re pretty sure that a scuff between the two is when Reno’s ear got torn (resulting in her ear having to be amputated). We gave up on trying to get them bonded.

Zinnia seems to be resting comfortably.  I tried getting pictures of her sutures but couldn’t figure out how to get good shots that show the actual damage without hurting her.  So I’ve got a bunch of shots that show just how large of an area it covers.

                                    Resting in her condensed space.

The stitches actually go from her shoulder down to her chest.

The shaved area is not as long as the actual line of sutures.

Oliver and Ozzie wonder what’s going on “downstairs”.

Everyone who is working on difficult bonds…PLEASE be careful and listen to your rabbits.  I didn’t and Zinnia paid the price. (Well, so did I to the tune of $280, but the money is not important. Plus my friend who tried to help with the bonding feels equally horrible and has offered to pay for half, so that takes some of the sting out of it.)  My selfish desire to adopt an 8th rabbit should not have trumped Zinnia’s desire to remain a single girl.  I will feel guilty over this for a long time.

Did this happen while the bonder was watching them, hands-on closely? With any bonds that are still unfolding, and with the difficult ones especially you must be glued to the rabbits during every session, armed with whatever it takes to stop an attack in its tracks. You can’t do anything else, but be with the rabbits. It is very tiring for that reason. Once you need a vet the bond is pretty much doomed.

Her hands were still on Zinnia. Trouble was in a neutral pen and she was in the pen with them, setting Zinnia down. She hadn’t even stood back up yet when he attacked her. Split second. Once he was on her he wouldn’t let go. The whole thing lasted about 10 seconds but the viciousness of it was something neither of us had ever seen before.

Wow, TARM, that is awful. Poor Zinnia!

I assume Trouble is going back to the rescue? I agree with Petzy that it doesn’t sound like they will be able to bond at all.

However, I hope you don’t feel too guilty about it – really. Most bunnies need a friend and you were just trying to give that to her. I don’t think you did anything wrong and what happened was unexpected and sounds like it was also unavoidable.

Lol Kathy, thanks for the sedatives…they are much appreciated.

Zinnia seems to be doing fine. She’s eating and pooping and I got her gray stuffed bunny at petsmart today. She’s been alternately snuggling it and ignoring it. When I first put it in there she automatically put her head under its chin like she was asking to be groomed. What the heck???

I totally agree and also hope you don’t feel lasting guilt. I can understand you and your friend feeling bad for Zinnia but it isn’t yours or her fault. Zinnia and Troubles first introduction did not indicate something like this would happen. From your description it happened out of the blue also.  I wonder if Troubs was really out of his comfort zone?   Anyway, even bonded bunnies can fight, though not as seriously. You gave them a chance to live as a pair which can be great for many rabbits.  I’m sorry it came to this though and hopr that Zinnia heals and remains her lovely self & that Trouble finds a good home also.

I think Zinnia is truly on the mend.  She pounced on her pellets this morning like she normally does.   She even stepped in her water bowl in her haste to get her nose in the pellet bowl.  :0)  She didn’t even flinch when I put her eye medicine in.  I’m hoping to be able to snuggle with her some tonight.

She sounds like she’s recovering nicely. She will forgive you long before you forgive yourself, and it looks like she already has. Anyway, she doesn’t actually blame you, since a cute guy turned on her. So be gentle with yourself. She clearly loves the stuffed bunny you got her, and is going to be fine.

I often wish Mimzy were that way, but I’m pretty sure he’s destined to be bonded to one of my other two eventually. (he used to dote on Pip so much)

The last couple of days she just kind of hung out in there and allowed me to wait on her but today she came out and hopped around just like normal. She’s such a good girl! And she still loves me. I was worried about that.

OMG  that sounds like the way Cotton attacks me when I smell like another male bunny.  Totally vicious.  Scary.

Oh Zinnia.  Heal up girl.  I know you will.  Go snuggle with your Mum.  She needs you.

TARM   don’t beat yourself up.   It happens sometimes.

This makes me happy that I seperted Cotton and Ruby after she made his lip bleed.  If not it could have gotten worse.  I know Boo wants a friend but I am afraid to bond him with Ruby.   She grunts growls and slaps at him through the cage.  She bit the hair off his nose when he went poking around her cage even.  I fixed it where they can’t touch each other.  Blocked the chair he got on and her cage where she sits.

Gosh talking about myself  you need some comforting too.    You can never tell what an animal is going to do.   Not really.

Thanks everyone. Zinnia seems to be her old self already. I’m still not letting her out of her cage because doctor’s orders are to stay confined for 10 days. She’s behaving herself and isn’t protesting but when I go to her cage to give her meds she greets me the way she normally does. She lets me scoop her up for her oral meds (I’m not saying she takes them willingly, I have to force her to take them, which is dumb because it smells like banana and I know she likes banana, silly bunny) and takes all the nose skritches I can dish out.

I miss Trouble. :0( Even though he hurt my girl I don’t blame him. I cannot believe how much I miss that little booger even though I have seven rabbits already. *sigh*

I just want to let everyone know that Zinnia got her sutures out last night so we can officially move past the whole bunny fight incident.  She healed nicely, sat still while they removed her stitches, and gave me snuggles when we finally got home.  She was cleared for “out” time (which I snuck in anyway after 5 days of sitting still.  All she did was lounge in front of Marshmallow and Digger’s cage) so she will get that tonight when I get home.

I’m so relieved that this is finally over.  No more medicine or special treatment needed.  She is a horrible medicine taker, even when it tastes like banana!  I’m sure she’s glad to have those itchy stitches gone too.

Thanks everyone for your healing vibes.  They worked!
