I spoke to my vet this morning and it turns out that she’d had this information the day Shadow died, but knew it wasn’t the time to disclose it as we were understandably upset. But after consulting with the dental vet, the conclusion seems to be that Mimzy’s cheek teeth are overgown. Apparently the ‘dark area’ she is seeing on the radiographs shows some curvature of the teeth. They’d like to do an ‘in mouth’ xray next, but I’d have to set that up with this other vet, plus they have what my vet calls and excellent exotics vet on staff that may be able to add in on Mimzy’s case while we’re there. She was going to call them and let them know I’d be in touch.

There is still the option of the CT scan, which my vet hinted MIGHT be performed here if certain strings were pulled. I’m holding off until the new vet can take a look at Mimzy and see what might be done otherwise.

An aside to BB, I did ask if Mimz might have that deep nasal blockage and so far the verdict is probaby (and hopefully) not. But I will ask the specialist.

I’ll most likely be making the appointment soon, as Mimz is miserable and sneezing again, not heavily… but enough to show the snot is back.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we’re in the home stretch. I’d like to get this wrapped up because all my remaining pets have issues now that need to be addressed to differing degrees.

That’s interesting. I wonder how they do the mouth xray.

Hopefully they can figure this out. Have you been to the other vet before, or no?

What I’m wondering is, if the xray confirms what they already think it is, what is the next step? I guess what I’m asking is whether the treatment for it will vary or not, whatever is exactly going on. Because if the treatment is the same, ie. certain meds, certain foods, or extraction, why not spare you and him the anxiety and expense of going through all of these exams and xrays and just go directly to treatment? Will knowing make a difference in the long or short term? Does it effect any possibility of the problem recurring?

Just that you’ve been through so much lately, I would like to see the best for Mimzy, and the most expeditious for you. I hope that doesn’t sound callous.
I like the fact that your vet was taking care of you too, by holding off until it was a better time. She sounds like a great vet who is totally invested in your family’s well being.

They’d have to put him under to do the mouth xrays…I think they insert a little film card just like they do for people.
And then, while he was under, if anything needed immediate attention, the vet could see to it.
I, too, want to minimize his discomfort, so we may just pass Go and collect $200…or in this case, spend another $1000.

The nice thing is, everyone is learning from this experience. I was surprised when my vet thanked me for the opportunity to add to her knowledge through the work she has done on Mimzy.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and advice. I’ll know better what we are doing by next week.
