Chuck has been a bit more tippy then he was but nothing bad-yesterday he was even humping his lion. I went to give veggies and he’s completely tilted again-worse then before and rolling. I can’t tell if he’s purring when I pet him or if he’s grinding his teeth in pain.

So I’m phoning my vet in the am, but I really don’t think he should go through everything again. I’m not sure I want to put him through it again. Metacam will make him more comfortable right now-but we did three rounds of antibiotics and time just seemed to help-I don’t know.

        Vibes would be great guys

                                  Thanks all!

My vet wants to try another round-so she’s ordering the meclizine (anti-naseant), metacam (for neck pain-he is in pain because he’s purring away when I massage his neck) and the chloropalm. I think we’ll see how the weekend goes and if it looks good do the whole course, and then see.

It’s a very hard decision-harder still that my vet really wants to keep trying and my family doesn’t think I should-both are making me feel guilty for either decision and frankly I don’t feel qualified to decide if we should try, push through or say goodbye. I just don’t know. Poor guy can’t eat his cecals right now so I have to clean them off of him, and he wasn’t eating well last night so I was force feeding (though he liked the food-I put fresh strawberries in a blender with carrots and CC and he didn’t fuss too much-but he absolutely hates being force fed or meds).

I am picking up vetwrap right after work as he broke one of his nails (presumedly from rolling) and then to the vet for meds, then to the grocery store to stock up for ‘Chuck’s illness diet of 90% veggies’ -I’m going to ask at the vet if they’d let me bring him in for a peri-area shave-I think that’s best-the cecals really stick to him. I know the shaving will be scary but they are good and I think that will be better long term then me trying to pluck them out of his fur in the am-thoughts?

This is tough – there is no easy decision. I would go with the “see how it goes through the weekend and then decide how to proceed”.

I bet this is also tough on Noot. How is he doing?

I’m so sad for Chuck and Noot. I really hope the weekend goes well. No one can decide what is best for him but you so try not to let the guilt bother you.

Lesley, I’m so saddened to hear Chuck is not doing well again. Having just gone through some tough time with a beloved pet, I can only say that you will know in your heart if it comes to making a decision. No one else can decide for you or should pressure you or otherwise. In the meantime, I will send some strong healing and hugging vibes for you and Chuck and Noot that all may right itself again for you.
God bless! ((((((((((((((((((((((((K&K, Chuck & Noot))))))))))))))))))

P.S. If the shave will not stress him further, I’d say go for it. It’s got to be better than dealing with a dirty bum and it’ll be easier to collect his cecals, I’m sure.)

You’ve already done so much for him – he has known happiness and love from you AND from Noot.  But some things aren’t meant to be and we know you will make the best decision possible for both of you, whatever that turns out to be.  And if it turns out that you have to let him go, we will cry for both of you and miss him terribly but know it was necessary.

Don’t be guilted into anything. I’m sorry he is worse. But if it was one of mine, I’d let go. You have rescued him and given him a good life. Trust your instincts when deciding for him. Spend time with him, don’t listen to people.

ARGH!! It’s so tough-he’s doing so well right now He’s going crazy eating happily and snuggling with Noot. He was very excited for carrot tops and cilantro that I just brought home.

My vet said she’d shave him herself (what I wanted-I’m not sure I trust a tech to do it-not because they are a tech but because my vet is sooo caring and careful I know she’ll do a good job). So we’re going to see how the weekend goes.

I know that ‘blind deaf and tilty’ sounds like-scared of euthanasia. I’m not-I’ve been there with animals and seen it-and quite frankly wish we had that option for people, it’s peaceful and dignified. I’m just-I cannot see that he wants to let go. I’m certainly not going to euthanize becuaes he’s expensive and inconvenient-he is!  But that’s no reason. When he rolls-he rights himself. Sometimes he takes a little breath and then gets up. I just helped him steady himself for grooming (it is hard to balance on a pillow). Quite franky with how he’s doing right now-I want to give him some time.

I’m uploading a video for you guys-him going crazy over some carrot tops-he’s such a trooper

He’s actually eight years old now-been with me for two of those years, which is quite a long life, and given the history of neglect I think that’s pretty fabulous.

. I have to imagine he wouldn’t want to eat if he’s given up, and that he’s eating with gusto is a good sign. Though if he does stop eating, I think I won’t force feed-I think I’ll consider that his “white flag” and phone the vet for his last trip.

Sorry -how is Noot doing? Noot is doing fat lol He’s came to us on a hunger strike and was totally thin-filled out nice-and then on a free feed of veggies alongside Chuck-he’s pretty chunky. I was actually mad at him in the last week as he’s been flirting with Kahlua through the bars (I JUST turfed the crib a few weeks ago and gave them back 1/3 of the bedroom). He’s great though, doing lots of snuggling-and I think he really likes being in the family room in the bed-he’s a nervous nelly disposition wise but he does like company. Noot and I have been in some arguments (Flirting with Kahlua, boxing me while I’m trying to change bedding, stealing Chucks raisins, biting my fingers when I try to give treats) but actually he’s a super bunny and doing well. I think he’s adjusted as well as Chuck to the illness.

It does sound like Chuck is showing some improvement, and is doing his best. I think it’s early enough that by the end of the weekend his situation will be very clear, and I’m optimistic.
It’s very stressful for you. Just take it day by day and when you need to do something else, you’ll know it more when that time comes.

When they’re eating (and especially with gusto) it’s a good sign. He will let you know if it is time. They always do in some way or other. We just have to be attentive to the signs.

What strikes me most, though, is that despite the tilt, he actually seems very robust. Not like a sick bunny at all, just disabled and coping with it. Noot is such an angel, too.

I understand your thinking about all his accumulated hardships and what you may eventually need to do for him, (here comes the “but”) but he seems to be handling it pretty well, and with that voracious appetite, I think it’s not yet time. I will support you in every way, but I hope that helps.

I had several members email me and say the short one I had posted of Hershey was very helpful because they’d never seen headtilt before and it was hard to envision from just reading descriptions of it..

However, do know that regardless of what happens, or what you decide, you will do the right thing. And I do agree that he is eating, which is a very good sign.

I also want to thank you for showing those videos, hard as it is to watch them. I didn’t know what head tilt really looked like either until now. Bailey’s clearly got it, although much milder than this, at least for now.

His blindness and deafness are things Chuck has lived with a long time so would seem the norm to him. I actually think his blindness would have him feeling less disorientated with the tilting…but it’s hard to be certain of course.

We are all sending prayers and best wishes for Chuck- the videos are so hard to watch but just seeing Noot back him up was so precious! I agree with the others that Chuck just looks so happy eating like a little piggy. I believe too that when it is time you will know and (most importantly) have a peace about it. We can always cross our fingers that it is a long time from now.

(and this is especially amazing with him deaf and blind). I think many times it can be harder on us, but from the video and your description it sounds like he is adjusting well to his tilt. Even when he roles completely over he’s right back doin’ his thing. I hope though that the severity of it does get better though to make it easier.

So my ChuckChores are stupendous-still up sterilizing syringes and doing laundry-have another bedding change/medication/feeding to do yet. Very very busy with all the ChuckChores, and other animal chores so I’m pooped, my back is sore sore sore and tired-did I mention pooped? hehe
Chuck has had no response to the medicaiton so far-I was just looking through pictures-as I’ve taken lots all the way through-can’t believe how much he recovered only to be so tilty again. Dave is calling him the exorcist bunny.

In terms of spirit he’s doing awesome. We’re experimenting with lots of different food to keep him interested as he’s getting bored. Pears, oranges, celery and brussel sprouts are new on the ChuckApprovedMenu this week, with Radichio, carrotops and kale still remaing champion top picks. He’s eating some alfalfa which is good and keeps down the critical care I need to give though he’s not touching the alfalfa cubes I bought and he previously liked. I seriously have a livestock bag of them-think I’ll have cubes until 2070 at this rate (Treat feeding rate).

I also figured out something with water-he really does not like me force feeding him water-even apple juice or orange juice watered down. But finally -ice cubes-how dumb am I that it takes five months to think of that? I was trying cat dishes, shallow plates, force feeding, wet veggies-you name it. Ice cube. He bites a bit and then throws it when he’s done drinking-my Chucky.

Doing a lot of clicker training with Noot-he’s bored. He’s really pretty smart-quicker then Rupert to learn. He even has our new bedding routine down and comes to be picked up to be moved out and in while I change-hops right to my hand to be moved.

Rupert is finally using his window ledge I made him-he had one but I took it down to accomodate changing things with Chuck and then rebuilt it and he would not go in it! I couldn’t believe it-took forever to make, it’s 3x as big….then I finally thought like a bunny and realized the new one didn’t have a ‘roof’-the old one did to prevent Rupert or Kahlua ever jumping down into Noot/Chuck territory. So I planted the MazeHaven on it and Rupert is up there all the time looking out his window at his birds again.

So besides some tilt, lots of medication and a lot more chores-things seem pretty back to normal here

Just a little video I took of Chuck mowing down some apple

The hair moves when the fluid moves-and the fluid moves when you move. This organ routes to the cerebellum (hind brain/primitive brain) and there it comes together with your visual info and gives you balance and the ability to move around. In general, ear infections in that area or that affect that deep area of the ear can result in balance/gait and similar problems (because they are sending wrong info to the cerebellum-you can feel dizzy and be tilted or unable to walk or lose coordination).
The head in animals with otitis (the infection he likely has, in the bulba of the ear) causes extreme tilt to the side affected by the infection. There are other causes of ‘head tilt’ which is just a name for the symptom really but most common are otitis and e.c. it’s thought-though horners disease, stroke, spinal trauma etc would also cause symptoms of the same nature

And good news looking for a petsitter (need one for may long weekend and was very nervous)! I got a lot ‘I’m booked’ or ‘I don’t do that area’ responses but a lot of good ones too-and I’m acutally able to choose from quite a few good ones. It’s going to be a LOT cheaper then I expected, only 110$ is one of the quotes I got from a company I liked (bonded, insured, criminal record check, experience, reference, licensed and registered with Canada pet service provider group thingy)-and that’s EIGHT visits with meds and feeding and bedding-WOW. I’m having a friend do the fish and Rupert and Kahlua for me, so it really only is Chuck and Noot but I was expecting about 90/day. Anyways scared to try someone new but we do a meet/greet and go over routines well ahead of time so I’m sure I’ll feel better before I go-or find someone else lol

Hopefully they will let you have peace of mind while you are away.

She charged $15/visit but I believe was going to be charging $18/visit.

Thanks Petsy-I talked to them but they aren’t registered with the ‘All Canadian Pet Services Agency’ and she didn’t seem to keen on looking after Chuck actually; I gave her the lowdown on Chuck and Noot, what’s required, etc-and asked for references and if she had experience with rabbits and/or giving medications-she didn’t answer any of my questions, and she didn’t seem interested as she said I’m not in her service area-so it would be a hassel for her. From her webstie and stuff she sounds great but I don’t think she’s real interested in driving out here *shrugs*

Annette-sure I’d love to know who pet sit for you!

I’m looking at Michelle from ‘Somebody’s Home’ petsitting, but I also wanted to hear back from prefurred pet sitting-she sounded really good too. Michelle is coming for a consult next weekend, her quote was good and her experience is good-I’m going to show her the routine and let her practice meds on Rupert and Kahlua (with water) and then see how she handles Chuck -and we’ll see if she’s still interested and if the quote goes up a ton or what have you. I’d like to have one ‘set in stone’ and a couple of back ups-so all the names I can get are great-thanks guys!!
