This is not bunny related but I thought I would share . My 10 year old dautgher’s cat Bella got outside and never came home a while back :Well to make her feel better and because she was such a good cat mommy ( the escape was no fault of her or anyones for that matter) MY husband and I told her we would rescue another cat .She found 2 on petfinder at a local Rescue group that she wants to go see but I thought I would stop by the local animal shelter to see if they had any cats that might fit into our family i know they are a kill shelter and have had a major problem about a year ago http://www.thenokillnation.com/?p=66 but i wanted to check it out it was close to my job and I had never been to any animal shelters before .So after work today i stoped in there and told the worker that i was looking for a cat for my daughter and i was just looking and if i found a few she might like i would bring her back..She took me back to the cat room where they had about 20  maybe less . The room and cages were clean but the cats were so dirty and greesey and very starvered for love most of them were rubbing up aginst the cges trying hard to get a scratch and pet . What most made me upset is that some of them had runny eys and very very nasty looking ears not just one or two but almost half of them and most of the cats where greesy and dirty .I asked the worker if any of them had health issues seeing the eyes and ears and she told me I dont know we dont have a vet on staff! I realy couldnt belive my ears some of them needed a vet or at the very least a bath! I felt so sad when i left there knowing i would not return and anyone else would be not so big on the idea of bringing home a sick dirty cat I am afraid they wont get adopted. I for one dont want to bring home a sick cat for my little girl to lose all over again So when i returned home I called the rescue group that had the 2 cats on petfinder my daughter wanted to meet .We go Sunday to vist I asked the lady that ran the rescue about this shelter and told her what I had seen . She saiys the problem with it is they dont have enough people there who really care . The link i posted about this shelter was about a year ago and in this mass killing of animals there some volenteers were able to sneek out a few dogs and cats before their  doom . She was friends with one of them so knew all to well the story . She says when she has room she is allowed to go there and take a few cats home as she is a rescue and that with what i had told her she was gonna go vist them today Thank goodness . I was really thinking about calling the human socity or something I dont know what the dogs looked like i didnt ask to see them the cats were sad enough ..sigh I wish i couid save them all .Sorry about the sad story but I just had to get it out I figuered you guys would understand .

I don’t blame anything on shelters especially municipal shelters – remember it’s the owners who have not spayed and neutered or have decided to dump their animals on the shelter. Most municipal shelters do not have the budge to afford a vet, this is very common. It is sad, but it is better to be in a shelter than on the street.

Rescuers don’t always really tell you the truth about shelters either and there is always politics involved in shelters and rescues. They do all try to save animals but there are just limits to what can be done.

As for the mass killing – you are most likely not getting the full story and let’s face it, animals shelters are overrun and they can only staff so much. Remember municipal shelters cannot turn away animals.

I also imagine those animals were brought in in bad condition, it’s not the result of the shelter, just the result of being on the street or with owners who don’t care.

The mass killing was a very big deal around here about a year ago and i have had read alot of news reports and seen the tv stories about it  when it happened the rescuer was not the one that gave me the story, the fact that they killed so many animals in one day for a something treatable was shocking(the healthy animals as well) .But that being said i dont think they are evil or anything they were trying to solve a problem the fastest way they could think of  wiich is why i thought to stop there and see about getting my daughters cat thereit just made me sad to see so many dirty and unhealty looking cats You are right it all boils down to the uncareing owners that dump their loved pets or flat dont care for them .

It was the canine coronavirus .And not every animal in the shleter was sick some of the animals that were put down had just been brought in that very day. Some of the volnteers int he news stories said the animals they got out never even got sick.
